Can any parent advise on Math Talent Program? Weekly program for 6 years? Or reselect again after year 1? What is the "use" of this program?

Hi, I'm registering my boy at Nan Hua under Phase 2A2 this July. However, I stay super far from the school at Khatib and works near Commonwealth mrt. Can anyone suggest good afterschool care? I will fetch him from afterschool care before 7pm. Hopefully, the afterschool care is near mrt as I do not drive.


I've already called the bus company and there's no school bus from Yishun to the school. I'm thinking of getting a cab and sending him to school before going to work as I need to reach my workplace by 7.10am. The nearest school, Naval Base, from my home is two bus stops away but it looks like that school is not a popular choice. Another option is Chongfu but I don't want to give up a confirm place at Nan Hua to try my luck at Chongfu. This is such a difficult decision to make. Anyone has any suggestion?

There is student care service in the school campus itself, called Nascans. It is convenient for the kids to go right after school and CCA.

There is a section on Mental sum in Math curriculum. May I know whether the child need to know some basic mental calculation to cope with such subject? Do I need to send my child to any form of abacus or kumon training to deal with such? Will my child be disadvantage if my child has no such training? Are many children attending abacus or some form of mental calculation training? Thank you.

Hi, my girl did not go for any abacus class or even any enrichment on Maths. I think the mental sum questions are quite easy, up to their current level, not advanced like abacus, so not to worry too much.

Can I ask, how does parents know what homework is given to the kids in P1?

Will there be communication book like childcare?
Or teacher will ask them to write down in diary?

My son's teacher asks the students to write the homework in their diary and parents have to initial in the diary on a daily basis to denote we have taken note of the homework.

Yes, I did initial on the diary book for the first few weeks and stop after that. No one is checking if you initial not. But you need to make sure your kid did copy down, else it defeats the purpose.

Nan Hua High Schhol and NHPS is not affiliated. I afraid you are not able to qualify for 2A.

I find it strange as her childcare mentioned that the spelling system will be removed soon. And that's why now, in K2, no chinese or english spelling. And they told me the HYPY wun be ephasize in K2 syllabus too. She has totally no interest in reading and not able to read sentence at K2 standard. Is the childcare too relax?

Hi, my kids childcare also does not have English and Chinese spellings. But they will teach some basic HYPY towards 2nd half of K2. I would suggest you to expose your kid to some HYPY before entering P1. Other than that I don't think any \"additional help\" is needed.

Any parents can share how the student care charge for school holiday? Per week basis? Per day basis? If the child were to send in only in the afternoon?

Appreciate whoever has the same experience can contribute:

My daughter is currently in a student care which located inside the school premises. Therefore, whenever school is closed for activities, the student center would need to be closed, example:

1. Pre-election day 6 May - 1 day
2. PSLE Oral exam - 2 days
3. PSLE listening exam - 1 days
4. PSLE exam - 5 days
5. Teacher’s day - 1 day

This make up a total of 10 days. As I understand from MCYS website, student care is allowed to close for 5.5 days a year. Any parents have the experience on this mind to share how the student care handle this?

On top of these closure, the student care charge $5 for every "extra" days that they need to open up for full day. Example, 9 May. Wonder why isn’t there a "give and take" in this scenario since 6 May is their "bonus" off day?
