• RE: COE trends

MadScientist:
Hi!

I think the high COE prices (>50K) are here to stay for a bit, albeit circa October 2011.

COE numbers have been readjusted and the new formula tweaked from the old formula so quota numbers are affected. This together with a lot of liquidity around, seems to be affecting ppty and COE prices...

I do not see a drop <40K until 2014 thereabouts...

btw, I got my COE at 6K in 2007 after tracking and timing, with a stroke of luck as well when the prevailing COE was 12K. Since it was a Jap car, it was the cheapest at that point. Even in Feb 2009, when Cat B COE was $589, the car price was higher as the Yen (hence OMV) went rocketing due to the GFC.

As expected, the results after the recent measures!
COE for cars up to 1,600cc ended at $74,689, down slightly from $78,301.
COE for cars above 1,600cc PLUNGED from $92,667 to $58,090.

For those who never believed that by 2014, COE will moderate, perhaps we are starting to see that happening...

Cheers! :imcool:

Hi,

I been staying in BB for the past 6years. Living with my ILs now. I hv 2 DS.
Can anyone recommend me a swimming coach and piano teacher. Searching high and low for one that is good with kids.
TIA
My kids go to the NS Hoe Team pool, and learnt from Camelot.

The admin is a bit iffy, but the coaches are reallly good. Especially Coach Dan... he's awesome with kids and they all like him.

Honey:
Can anyone please share where can we rent or download the Victoria map onto our Garmin GPS? We used to go to this shop in Funan to rent the map but they have since stop this service. Now cracking our head. Many thanks.

You can google search the city map...

Otherwise, the iPhone/iPad map is good... Or using Sygic even better as it does not need 3G signals!
I would be cautious at this point of time... This is the last leg.

could you elaborate what sort of time frame for this last leg? because FED and ECB interest rate seem to be set for low rates until 2015.

FED, ECB, Libor, Sibor are all going to stay low for a long time, not before end of 2014 will we see anything

that is a good 2.5 years from now, and who knows what other economic bombshells may appear in the next 30 months ?

borrow more to buy cheap assets and wait for the upturn ?
Agree to the first part....
Real question is how long more can this sustain?

I am a chart artist (read technician)... And if anyone just looks at the simple charts, you can tell that the more money they pump, the less rally power the markets have.

As for asset inflation... It is inflationary!
But think what follows massive inflation...

It's a good time, only if you know what to do.

• RE: Is Orange a living or non-living thing?

I am a trained molecular biologist, and I say it is living.

1. I can find cells in the orange. Each cell has a nucleus, and also has functional mitochondria, etc. It is still undergoing respiration and all other cellular activities that is required for any living thing, cell or multicellular.

2. For those who claim that if given food water and air, it cannot survive... How about plant tissue culture, where we take plant cells and pop them into a matrix of nutrients (food and water), then grow little shoots out of them?

Seriously, our kids are going to get confused... The teachers teaching them do not have the sense nor the avenues to provide leeway in reasoning.

The flaw in the question is what is defined as a \"thing\"

My points above show that it is living, period.

But the ambiguity comes from THING... What's a \"thing\"?

Dictionary.com says...

noun
1.
a material object without life or consciousness; an inanimate object.

2.
some entity, object, or creature that is not or cannot be specifically designated or precisely described: The stick had a brass thing on it.
3.
anything that is or may become an object of thought: things of the spirit.
4.
things, matters; affairs: Things are going well now.
5.
a fact, circumstance, or state of affairs: It is a curious thing
.

So you see the language issue is quite distinct from the scientific issue here?

Trust me, there are others... Like what is an aim and what is a hypothesis.
The schools have the definition the opposite of how we real scientist use it... Our hypotheses qualifies as the schools' definition of aim, and vice versa.

Drop me a message and I’ll see if I can help.
Might not be Tena, but they are quality and from importers.

• RE: Travel: United Kingdom - General

nani:
Hi UK experts,

Our family of 2 adults & 2 teens planning to travel to Britain in the last two weeks of Dec. As this is our first time in this continent, we would like to cover as much as possible including Wales and Scotland.

Spend more time in Scotland! But it may be cold and dark as early as 4pm!

Appreciate if anyone can help and suggest on our 14 days itinerary. We really do not mind driving 4 hours a day from one destination to another. I understand that due to the time constraint, this is very much a touch and go itinerary and we are not afraid of being fatigue nor over confident in driving more than 300km a day. And has take into consideration that daylight is only 9am-4pm during winter. We usually start when there is daylight and hope to get to the next destination before it turns dark. Yes, I know we will be spending alot of time in the car and enjoy the ride along the way only touching stuff that we really like/need to stop (definitely cutting out the inside tour of castle, cathedrals, museums and no luxury shopping). We are more into driving and stopping at small eateries, little towns and definitely EPL training ground. Anfield, Old Trafford and a nite at West End is a MUST GO for us.

If flying in by Emirates, we have a choice of landing in Gatwick or Heathrow, may I ask which airport is better?

Personally prefer Heathrow... And then take the Heathrow Express into Kings Cross.

Ok now we plan to fly into London, head straight by train to Manchester and get the car and move on? How far and convenient to get from Heathrow to the train station to catch a train to Manchester? Which website can I book the train tkts from?

Now, am concern where should be my overnite stops be? Say:

2N Manchester
1N Lake District (163km 1h58m)
2N Edinburgh (215km 2h35m)
?N York
Etc..

I think Windemere and Lake district is better. But usually best in spring.
York is comparatively good in winter.
Edinburgh is my favourite. Base there for Scotland.
drive up to Loch Lomond, then up to Fort William, and go by Glen Nevis (the valley next to Ben Nevis). Find the small road that leads in and you would be in Braveheart land. It's awesome.
Glasgow is a fun place to be too... Especially for shopping.
Edinburgh is the best for yearend as they celebrate Hogmanay, a celebration of 6 weeks leading up to the new year. If you can, spend new year's eve and get tickets to go for the street party on Princes street on NYE. it would be an awesome experience!

I have total of 13 nites (including 3-4nites in London?)...where should I stay?
In London, stay around Bayswater area. My fav area.

Should I still bother to do a day trip Bath/Salisbury? Seriously, what is there to do in Bath beside the history and spa?
Bath is a charm of it's own. A day or overnight trip is good enough. Can walk the whole city center really. There is some pancake place that is a MUST GO.... Think it is Sally Nunn's. Jammed packed and world famous.

The above is base on my rough guide on google maps, not sure if the actual driving is feasible. I did this while preparing my homework for south/north NZ as well and it was accurate. Can someone share what is the avg. speed limit on these routes and the estimate cost of toll (will be great if can even be avoided for some if not too long of a detour)? Eg. Manchester to Lake District stated approx 163km 1h58mins in Google map, is this true to the road condition and within speed limit?

I didn't recall much toll. But between London and Ein, I prefer to take the train. Book way early and it's cheap.
On highways, it's about 70mph.
Road conditions are generally good.
Having said that... UK has frozen over 2 consecutive years and I am not expecting very much change this year. So... Do be mentally prepared for changing travel plans, finding alternatives, as well as driving in heavy snow.

Have noticed most car rental operates with manual transmission cars, are auto transmission cars common in the UK? Any idea if I pick up the car from Manchester and drive all the way to Scotland and back, are there any important points/qns to the car rental I’ve to look out for when renting a car?
There are auto cars. Pls get a sizable car for safety.
Manual cars are great for driving in snow... Better than autos IMHO.
Actually, train up to Edin may be better IMHO. But depends o. Your objective.

Can I assume that other than shorter daylight the road condition should be drivable despite the unpredictable weather (no one can tell that) during December?
Yes, shorter daylight as you go up north.
Expect decent driving conditions, unless snow storms hit.

Thanks in advance 🙂
I dropped you a message. Pls check.
🙂
