      Hi MathGuru,

For Q3 \"Millie and Ronnie had a total of $338. After Millie saved $49 and Ronnie spent half of her money, they both had the same amount of money. How much did Millie have at first?\"
As it is stated Millie \"Saved\" $49 I got the following answer which is diffrent from yours. May be I'm wrong.

      2*49 = 98
      338-98 = 240
      240/2 = 120
The final answer I got was 120.

      - Tinasen
      Hi Tinasen,

Sorry, I've read the question wrongly! Haha...instead of saved $49, I read it as soent $49! Ooopsss...No wonder I thought my answer looks quite weird with fraction in it! Correct answer should be $80.

      Here's the amended solution:

      Dear all,

Happy Chinese New Year to you and your loved ones!! :please:

Sincerely apologise for not being as active in this forum as I want for the past months. Have been tied up with renovation stuff amidst my tuition classes. Although I've my wedding preparations coming up in the next few months, I hope to be able to contribute more in time to come.

Appreciate the other members who have been sharing their solutions selflessly and tirelessly all this while.

Here's wishing everyone a great year ahead!! :celebrate:

      Hi Mathguru,

Kindly help me with my math problem.
Colin and Rosdin had the same amount of pocket money. Each day, Colin spent $12 and Rosdin spent $15. When Rosdin had $18 left Colin had 5 times as much money left as Rosdin. How much was each boy's pocket money?

It will be of great help if you show me the solution by model method.

      TIA

      Hi Mathsguru,

I have two questions that need your gudiance:

      1. The figure below is made up of 4 squares and a rectangle. Rectangle ABCD has a perimeter of 40cm. The total area of the 4 squares is 500cm2. Find the area of the rectangle.

      2. The figure below, not drawn to scale, shows three triangles of differnet sizes overlapping one another. The sum of areas of Triangle A and Triangle C is 30% that of Triangle B. 12.5% of Triangle A is shaded, 5% of B is shaded and 20% of Triangle C is shaded. Express the area of Triangle A as a percentage of the area of Triangle C.

      OngMum:
I have two questions that need guidance :-

      1. Edison cycled at a speed of 10m/min while Damien cycled at a speed of 15m/min. Edison started cycling from Sleepy Town and Damien started at the same time from Happy Town. They cycled towards each other. They first met at Point Q and then continued to cycle. Upon reaching their destination, they made a U-turn and continued cycling towards each other again. This time, they met at Point R. The distance between Point Q and Point R was 324m.

      (a) What was the distance between Sleepy Town and Happy Town?
      (b) How long would Edison have cycled when he met Damien at Point R?

      2. 2 identical tins, X and Y, were half filled with paint. Tin X contained only white paint while Tin Y contained only black paint. 1/2 of the white paint in Tin X was poured into Tin Y. After stirring the contents in Tin Y thoroughly, 1/2 of the mixed paint in Tin Y was poured into Tin X. The contents in Tin X ws mixed thoroughly and 1/2 of the mixture was then poured into Tin Y. If 7.2 litres of black paint was in the mixture in Tin X, how much white paint would there be in the mixture in Tin X?

      Thank you. Cheers!

      Skydust:
      Hello Mathguru,

How do you solve this question?

A box of donuts is shared equally among Clara,Siti and Joy. Clara divided her share into 3 equal packets. Siti divided her share into 4 equal boxes.Joy divided her share into 6 equal boxes. The total number of donuts in 2 of Clara's boxes, 3 of Siti's boxes and 3 of Joy's boxes is 138. What is the total number of donuts in the box at first?

EDIT: I got the answer 216, is it correct?
      Hi Skydust,

Yes, your answer is correct! I've done up a model diagram for your reference. The trick here is to use LCM to obtain a common no. of units for each of them.

      Please help!

      P5 Question:

      Q. Four girls, Alice, Bibi, Carol and Delia, each have some stickers. the number of stickers Alice has is 1/2 of the total number of the stickers Bibi, Carol and Delia have. The number of stickers Bibi has is 1/4 of the number of stickers Alice, Carol and Delia have. The number of stickers Carol has is 2/3 of the total number of stickers Alice, Bibi and Delia have. If Delia has 30 stickers, Find the total number of stickers Bibi and Carol have altogether. :?:

      TIA

      Hi Maths Guru

Can you look at this Clock Question, please?

Please help on the answer to the question below.

John and Tom race around a circular track, divided like the face of a clock, into 12 sections. If John gives Tom four sections start and runs half as fast again as Tom, at what point on the track will he overtake Tom? (Assume on the clock face that John and Tom start at 12 and 4, respectively).

The answer is 12, however, if John gives Tom four sections starts and is half as fast, surely does not half as fast mean that John is running at half the speed of Tom. And if he is 4 sections behind, surely Tom will win. Unless half as fast means that John runs at 1.5 times of Tom. Tearing my hair out here. Please help!!!

Hi, do all questions get answered, as I have checked on here, and my PM to see if the above question has been answered - and it has not :?

      Hi Optimistforum,

Like what you had mentioned, there's an error in the question because there's no way John could have overtaken Tom if he gave Tom a headstart and still run slower than Tom.

Perhaps you would like to re-check the source of the question? šŸ™‚

      The qn is:

The total age of Danny and Mike is 37 yrs old. Danny is 9 yrs older than Mike. What was Mike's age 5 yrs ago?

Of course mentally I know the ans. If I say 2y + 9 = 37, I'm afraid it's hard for ds to follow.

How do I present the working in a simplier way so that ds can follow? (as long as I can present it systematically, I'm sure he will understand). Thanks.
      Hi Markfch,

You can guide your DS slowly to draw the model out for this diagram. My advice to my students is to let the person with smallest no. of items, weight, money, etc (in this case, age) be 1 unit. In algebraic terms, this will be \"x\". šŸ™‚

Here's my solution for your reference.
