    • RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

      Hi pumkin pie,

I haven’t gone through all the trails, but I feel he is just a typical gifted child. Do research in Google and YouTube about gifted children to see whether his behavior can be explained. I just finished getting my second son (4 yrs) to finish his work which I started asking him to do since 3pm…he spent almost 2 hours playing piano instead, and this is unusual.

I think children get bored or not motivated if too easy or difficult easily. All children are like that I believe. Gifted children maybe exhibits the traits even more. They also tend to get over excited sometimes. My first son whose iq is around 140 could complete 40 pages of chess questions in one day, but do nothing for the next few days even when he has a daily task of 10 pages. He is talkative with peers but very shy in front of adults, especially teachers… Poor emotion control, Not calm, very anxious, poor inter personal skills… Many behaviors and issues seem unconnected, but to me, they are all almost pointing to two levels: a normal child reaction and behavior, and an intensified child reaction and behavior. Again, the higher iq is, the higher the intensity is. It is driven by the deep feelings and emotions within him and how intense it is.

On the practical side, I would stop the routines for a while or introduce changes to find the best way. Get extra help so that you can focus on him: he probably needs more help from you on managing intensity within him and its output than academics. It’s a life long battle to manage his intensity.

Hehee, as long as he is improving from the beginning of the year, we should be happy about it. Today I got some positive feedback from my son. He said he likes going to school because it has many events. 🙂

      Hi cafemug,

My son was confirmed to be gifted by professionals and sits in a neighborhood school. I told his form teacher about it for two reasons: 1. To see any special arrangement can be made in some scenarios; 2. To seek her understanding in dealing with some of his behaviors. So far both are met up to my expectation (of course I don’t expect too much in the first place as primary its our own responsibility to raise the child). 3rd term my son was assigned as group leader and later was sacked. I told the form teacher: he has to learn from his mistakes. This new term he is assigned the role again and I’m yet to see how he will prove himself.

I think being protective will not do the good to the gifted children. Since academic part is no challenge to them, let them take up the challenges elsewhere. I told my son that nothing is fair and at some point I purposely set very biased rules at home. I call it intensive training. If he is selfish, I set the rule against that. If he is afraid of water splashing onto his face, I splashed to him 3 times a day till he used to it. He did not like younger brothers mess up his toys, I let them mess up his toys. Last term one of his classmates always complained about him and he hated her. I told him the best quality of a human being is to forgive and made him give gifts to her. If he is upset, sad, or hurt, I will not comfort him and I will let him to come out of his emotions himself. Talk sense to him only after he is calmed. If he throws tantrums because of that, I will be angry with him.

      Hi Daffodils,

The range will give some indication on a child’s intensity level. In general, the higher IQ score, the higher the intensity level and more difficult to control his/her emotion.

      Hi Daffodils,

Your son falls in which gifted range?

I only knew that my son is gifted after he started p1 this year. But even if I knew that earlier it would not change my selection of school: we enrolled him to the nearest school around us. As expected the school not have any special program for him. What I did was researching on gifted children and explained to his form teacher about some of his behaviors whenever possible. I did request the form teacher to allow my son to scribble on his notebook in class after he finishes his work. The form teacher is quite understanding and initiated some special arrangements for him.

I think it’s important to be a well rounded person. I told my son that his target for p1 is to improve his EQ and social skills. Besides school, he got quite a few activities and interests to develop. I’m happy that the neighborhood school did not assign much homework and it’s pressure free so far.

My son is in a camp this week at the open center at horse city which focuses on behaviors issues and social skills. don’t know how it will help him yet but it seems to be the only camp addressing EQ based on my last minute research before I signed my son up last week.

      Hi Moustache,

I can understand the part on cost, but a can of worms? So far I never regretted getting my son tested. it only helped us in a positive way. I would share with others selectively. His close friends in the neighborhood do not know about him being gifted. Teacher knew but they would not share with his peers. So nothing is actually different for his day to day interaction with peers. But we are getting more understanding and supports from teachers and within the family. I made it clear to my son and whom we shared that being gifted is just being different. We have to understand ourselves so that we can improve ourselves.
