    • RE: DSA 2016

Thanks šŸ™‚ Sota DSA process started very long ago, shortlisting was early in June and auditions/interviews at end-June, so we've waited anxiously for some time ... phew..

All the best to all who've applied via DSA to the schools of their choice!

Yes, the Literary Arts students will have to choose either Film or Theatre in IB Year 5/6. It is unlikely they will be able to do Dance, Music or VA, as they wouldn't have had the requisite foundation their peers in these art forms acquired from Year 1-4.

I clarified this with SOTA at their open house. Film is a subject that is only offered in Year 5/6 anyway. A SOTA Film student I spoke to switched from VA to Film in Year 5/6, so i guess that's also a possibility for students of other art forms if they are keen.
Thanks for clarifying, lexis. This seems to suggest though that the Film/Theatre option is not a must:

Does not seem to make sense to me for Sota to start a new Lit Arts course (supposedly focused on creative writing) only to make the students choose another arts genre for their IB subject - film/theatre scriptwriting skill will not be sufficient for them to take on Film or Theatre as an art form subject.

I'll ask Sota and see what they say.

Students and parents need to be aware Literary Arts is not a IB Diploma subject. Year 5 students taking this LA will need to switch to one of the IB Diploma subject art forms like film or theatre. They may not have developed strong foundation in these art forms by the time they reach Year 5.

Hi there, is that right? They have to choose another art form?

I found this in the Literary Arts FAQ, although it's not very clear either:

      Q: Will\t my\t child\t be\t required\t to\t take\t Literary\t Arts\t at\t the\t IBDP? How\t
      does\t this\t relate\t to\t IB?\t What\t do\t Literary\t Arts students\t do\t in\t the\t IB\t
      years?
      A: In\tYear\t5\tand\tYear\t6,\tLiterary\tArts\tstudents\twill\tbe\table\tto\tchoose from\t
      a\t range\t of\t subject\t combinations\t for\t IBDP.\t \t They\t can\t offer\t Film\t or\t
      Theatre,\t or\t they\t can\t continue\t with\t the\t arts\t through\t their\t Extended\t
      Essay,\tCommunity\tProject\tand\tLiterary\tArts\tPortfolio.\t\t
      \t

Could anyone whose child is currently in the Lit Arts course clarify?
