A lot of private tutors use Kiasu parents as an avenue to increase their student base and thus their tuition business, by the so-called high recommendations of parent groups of kiasu parents.


Don’t you find it strange too… and wonder why an A level student should come into Kiasu parents just to recommend her chinese teacher and sing praises. I thought kids nowadays will just go surf the web for their own interests and play games and Facebook when they have time?

Is there by any chance the tutor is also reading kiasu parents and asking parents and students who have good relationship to sing praises for them and if possible come in their defense ?

I just share my child’s tuition experience. Is up to any parents who are interested to go see for themselves. If the teacher is good, I shall naturally recommend the teacher. If the teacher is not, then let’s share experiences.

I’ve encountered horrible a group tuition teacher who once kept asking me to write favorable testimonials for her in Kiasu parents. But in the end she was such a disappointment.

You are lucky to have a bright and clever child who can score A* and thus make you very happy and satisfied.

But you read this thread, there is also another parent who will not recommend the tutor.

I shall stop at this because there is no point discussing. Some points you mentioned I am suspecting were also provided by the tutor.

I am not the tutor’s enemy, neither am I a fan. I only share my experience. So that’s THAT.

I sent my kid to Mrs Lim at Eastvale condo for tuition for 1 year. Her 1 to 1 is very expensive. You can check it out. About $280 per session for 1-1. She may have changed her pricing, but you can check. P6 she charges around $280 to $300 which is about $65+ per lesson for group lesson. Sometimes in a group class, there are between 2 to 7 students in the class.


PSLE chinese oral… sometimes as many as 10 in a class i heard from my kid. Because before prelims and PSLE… all kiasu, came for extra lessons. And so… all came for the same class together. How can your kid practise oral properly unless you request for 1-1 ?

I believe it takes more than group tuition to learn oral properly.

I found her good initially and very committed. She can cover quite a lot of materials per lesson and she is very fast. But after some time, I felt her commitment level deteriorate. And felt that sometimes she is concern to make more money by maximizing the class and by shuffling students about. This is just my own observation.

I ask my kid what she did with them after every lesson and looked at the materials. It was good to have such materials to begin with. But as my kid had some special needs, her material was too simple and insufficient.

In the end, I pulled my kid out from her tuition class because I saw the way my kid’s school teacher drive the class to learn chinese and the materials provided by the school was really "got standard". My kid’s CA marks improved by 10 marks due to the guidance of the school teacher. Compo improved from 26 to 32 after drilling by the school teacher. We both agreed this is definitely school teacher’s effort. I say this because I was involved in my kid’s work. I had to help test my kid because the school teacher was going to test them one by one the next day. The school teacher passes or fails the students if they did not study the materials given enough.

I am not a believer of having group tuition and combine levels too, e.g. P5 and P6. Sometimes P6 and Sec 1. I learnt my lesson after sending my kid to a number of private group tuitions.

Also, I do not think it is ethical of a tutor to tell the students to write composition during tuition class and then "disappear" from the classroom and only to reappear to dismiss the class. Neither do I think a tutor should ask students to do mock paper during lesson time; and then go cook breakfast or dinner or wash dishes during lesson time. It’s just too good money if these tutors do such things. Worst is… they tutor never mark and never return mock paper. My kid encountered two tutors who did this already. This is just so good money to them! Easy money especially when her fees are not cheap for group tuition.

Eventually, i get a private 1-1 tutor for my kid at $60 for 1.5 hours. And I am there to listen into every lesson, and I get to tell the tutor what I need her to do with my child and what to drill. That’s just my two cents worth of sharing.
