      Hi,

Just asking some sec 2 maths questions, please help 😢

      1)
A rectangle of sides x cm and y cm has an area of 72 cm2. Another rectangle of sides (x+1.5) and (y-4)cm has the same area. Find the values of x and y.

      2)
When 5 is added to both the numerator and denominator of a fraction, the result becomes 1/2. When 1 is subtracted from both the numerator and the denominator, the fraction becomes 1/5. Find the fraction.

      3)
The scale of map X is 1: x and the scale of map Y is 1:y. If the same distance is represented as 5cm on map X and 7.5cm on map Y, calculate the ratio x:y.

      Thanks.

      For qns 2, use algebra.
let the original fraction be x/y.
      (x+5)/(y+5) = 1/2
      cross multiplying, 2x + 10 = y+ 5
      2x + 5 = y
      (x-1)/ (y-1) = 1/5
      5x - 5 = y - 1
      ......

      For qns 1
      xy = 72
      (x+1.5)(y-4) = 72
let y= (72/x) and substitute . You will get a quadratic equation after multiplying the whole equation by x.

      For qns 3,
      5x = 7.5y
      x/y = 7.5/5 = ...

hmmm too busy to give you full solutions. hope this helps.

      Thanks for the solution!

      Anyone can help me pls!!!!

      Hi,

I am a foriegn student from Australia and I have sat for the 1st AEIS test. I'm not sure about the exam preparation things though, but the test itself is not very hard....as far as I can remember. English was just comprehension and essay writing, and it wasn't really challenging.
For maths, as far as I know, it wasn't too hard but it depends on the level your cousin has studied to.
Maybe try solving the assesment books of his/her level, or her grades. Exam papers and mock exams helped me alot.

      Hope this helps-and good luck.

Uhm, thanks for all the great replies.

One question, isn't RI a boys' school? Actually, I'm a girl but I don't mind mixed session schools or girls' school. As long as I can get into a school šŸ˜›
And, I don't really want to go to an international school or an IB school because the fees are outrageous (or so I have heard) and the education curriculum they give is quite different to the normal IP schools.
      So....any other possibilities?

Oh yeah, and one more thing.
Can anybody give tips and advises on how I should prepare for my IP admission test to VJC?? It's coming up on this Saturday, and I am totally on off guard at the moment. :?:

So yeah, still waiting for your replies.
      Thanks alot šŸ˜„

according to my friend, VJC's test questions are mostly on physics and maths. Good luck!

Thanks for the great reply, it really helped me alot!

so u r a girl, you want to go to a non-SAP IP school. In this case your choices are limited to:

      1. RGS
      2. VJC and
      3. TJC

Out of the 3 above, RGS is the most difficult as they take in most of their students from sec1 and left with very few places for sec3s.

Okay, thanks for the great info.

Also, any tips on how I should prepare for the IP test??? The admission test, maybe?? Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

    • Interested Student Asking Help for IP!!!

hey, I'm a newbie and I'm a interested student in IP.

I'm in sec 2 right now but I wish to transfer to an IP school.
So far, I have applied to VJC only for their IP programme as I haven't been educated in Singapore, because I am an international student and
I can't speak chinese which resulted in exemption from MTL in my secondary school.
      So the question is.....
Are there any other IP school that I can apply to which doesn't emphasize on chinese language and traditions a lot?
And for the IP test, is it really hard? Any tips on how I should prepare for it? And if I do make it into the interview, what are the questions I should expect for? Very worried and nervous, hope you can understand šŸ˜‰

      Waiting for your replies šŸ™‚
      thanks.
