James Ang:
Who in P6 this year can solve this 2009 PSLE Maths (5 marks) question? (*Page 72, Q16 in the new PSLE Maths 5 year series.)

Jim bought some chocolates and gave half of it to Ken. Ken bought some sweets and gave half of it to Jim. Jim ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates. The ratio of Jim's sweets to chocolates became 1 : 7 and the ratio of Ken's sweets to chocolates became 1:4. How many sweets did Ken buy?. (PSLE 2009, 5 marks)
The model methoid is a pain. just use ratio and basic algebra and there u hv it. I was in P6 last year and i solved that question in 4 minutes munching on popcorn. Most of my friends cud do it too. dun understand the fuss over the question
To all GEP Veteran Parents, need clarification for the summary from my conversation from other parents after 1 yr of GEP (disclaimer: based on same class same school):

      1. To survive in GEP need to go for external tuition, Learning Lab highly recommended even by the teacher. Else you won't be able to catch up as in school do not really guide them
      2. Need to self learn at least up till P6 or Sec level material else you won't catch up.

Also for P5 projects, they're asked to choose between DI, IVP and IRS. But for DI, only limited to 7 children as was told that based on GE branch MOE direction that need to allocate more students for IRS. Understand from http://www.idodi.org website, actually there is no limit in no. Of team/participant..

Maybe can help to share and enlighten me?

      Thanks..
      Confused P4 GEP Parent

In reply to your questions 1 & 2, the answer is NOT TRUE. In fact, the GEP teachers told them NOT to go to Learning Lab. The GEP teachers give a lot of notes and if you pay attention in class, take notes and brainstorm with your friends, you should do fine. If in doubt, seek out the teacher after class.

Not sure about DI, but it's probably a school decision because they may not have enough teachers to guide the students.

Thanks... The teacher actually mentioned that there are GEP teacher giving tuition outside with rate of SGD150~200 per hour.
Was being 'frighten' by the 'friendly advised' by teacher especially in P3 DS was getting best in level and subject but now outbid 5 subjects, only 2 above 80 and the other 3 not below 70.... Find that 'friendly advise' quite demoralizing...
That's daylight robbery

      Hi Almighty,

I thought that one of the pointers was what did your friends do but that's not mentioned in your compo.

That aside, I think it is quite well written.

      Cheers :celebrate:

Chief, should we start the game for PSLE 2010 Top Student Predictions?
Come and put in your predictions with the reason, eg:
\"My prediction is Sungei Girl's School because they have the most hardworking teachers\"

Remember - must have both School name and Reason.

100 KiasuPoints will be awarded to those who predicted correctly.
200 KiasuPoints will be awarded to those with the most creative Reasons šŸ™‚ , even if the prediction is wrong.

Only 1 prediction per member is allowed.

Contest ends at 9pm on 25 Nov 2009.

//Note to moderators: Please do NOT add or change the items in the poll any more. This list is based on the Top 15 Academic Schools in Singapore. We just lost the entire group of people that voted \"None of the above!\" in the poll.
I hope the top school will come from neighbourhood school and score<290>290. besides, since the paper is easy, there is a very low chance of that happening.
No offence ln2912, but you guys make it seem so mysterious and not so transparent (which is largely 'unacceptable' to most public) when I feel that this is so similar to energy healing which can give you the same abilities as well and better than that, energy healing helps in your health as well and the best part is, it cost only a few hundreds. :celebrate:

No worry, but i cant comprehend why u said its so mysterious bcos there's a preview session for all to attend before signing up for e workshop. As such, u're free to ask any question w no obligation. Of course, if u felt tat e energy healing is of help to e children in terms of memory n concentration which is e main objective, tats definitely a good alternative.

Well, I went to one such preview & I still dun know the methods used. The speaker did not really answer our Qs & the kids just show us their things.

I heard abt the music thing & they woke up with a ring sound. I am thinking have they been hypnotized? I am skeptic & I dun sign up.

Anyway, $1k+ for a 2 days workshop is ..... & when I tried to google for the so-called founder & researcher names, there are none.

Furthermore, the one I went to is only a $1000 company. Nope, I am not messing up my child's brain. Period!
juz guessing....maybe the 'music' is the words they have to read blindfolded. After listening to it again though they are unconscious, it gets sort of ingrained and when they try to read blindfolded just after waking up, it is the first thing that rolls off their tongue.

      pupilview:
I think some fault lies with the school as well. They need to check all classrooms before closing.Instead of this teacher, if it was a student, I am sure as parents we would have been very nasty and demanded action. As a teacher, she should have been aware of the school procedures. The school on its part should also be responsible for teachers as well as students and ensure that no one remains in the classroom after operating hours.

In yesterday's paper, the person responsible for checking that no one lingers on the school premesis after hours confessed that she did not perform the mandatory check as the school compound was quite large. So maybe this teacher can win after all.
DS told me the HMT 1-3 point can be added to apply any school, bonus point to encourage for students sit for HMT, is that true?

Don't think so, I have not heard of anything like that from DS and he is very alert kind. Anyway, can call up school to check but it will be unfair to just change at this juncture, so I think your info could be wrong.

NOT any school. As per page 3 of the big book on 2011 S1 posting to Sec school, the 1 -3 points are only given to those top 30% of the PSLE cohort who took HCL and who enters a SAP sec school
I don't take HMT though my class is a HMT class. As far I understand, as long as you take HCL you will enjoy the respective bonus points when you apply for a SAP secondary school. I think this still prevails even if you are not in the top 30% of the cohort although this is rarely the case.
Maybe vk2010 confused this with the criteria for eligibility to take up HMT in secondary schools. When you are in the top 10% of the cohort, you will automatically be offered the option. If you happen to be in the top 11% to 30% of the cohort as well as achieved either an A* in MT or a Merit in HMT, you will also be offered the option of taking up HMT.

      Can anyone clarify? :celebrate:

I think it is not possible to have t-score of more than 75 for any subject.

Max t-score for each subject is 75. Max aggregate is 300.

      http://road-to-psle.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-psle-aggregate-and-t-scores-are.html
Of course it is possible to get more than 75
