Inherently, Mathematics is as essential as breathing air.

The challenge is how to make Math meaningful and not a ‘turn off’ with regards to learning.

    • RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools

      Hi…

My boy is in ACSJ come 2016.
      In Pri level,
Primary and Junior are being compared.
      In Sec level,
      Barker vs Independent.
To say which is better is not so clear cut.
Only the ‘Brand’ is similar…but the deliverables are slightly different. For those whose child has yet to be ‘officially’ enrolled, do check with friends whose kids in the various schools.
Even after comparison…there will still be the last question if the school culture or ethos resonate well with your inner beliefs of nurturing your boy to his fullest potential.
I’m going in with no rose tinted glasses…there will be friendship + family ness + comraderie…but there will also be intense competition + rivalry + stressful moments.
"Is this the school my child can be safe and happy in all the academic highs n lows?"

      Hence, my 2 cents worth.

I’m glad we made the change from a church kindie in 2012 to Pats in 2013.

Even thou Pats Tanglin may not do extensive learning profiling for my boy yet, but e casual chat with e chers give me e assurance they know way they r doing.
Even I as a mommy looks forward to send him to Pats! I also like the fact that they introduce new words & phrases thru e storytelling & interaction…lots of interesting Mandarin songs with actions.
My boy oso learns how to play ‘Scissors, Paper, stone’ in mandarin n recite ‘My body parts’ in a catchy chant…
E only thing is that written work probably comes in later part of N2 so continue to do learning while home…

For those who ask about Tanglin's branch, the teachers seem to work quite closely with the kids in terms of work display and activities.

They had just finished the Lunar New Year celebrations last month and doing a tea party to showcase their curriculum and kids' performance in mid Mar.

We are fortunate to have teachers who are understanding and patient with the N2s whereby not all in the kids in the class have sustained attention span; looking @ the way my boy looks forward to interact with his teachers and friends, I won't say Tanglin is fantastic but so far so good...keeping my fingers crossed. :xedfingers:

Principal Ada Teo seems quite an approachable and understanding principal; the working environment seems congenial to be in. I had seen her sitting in to do relief for a teacher for EL!

The admin. is also quite helpful...hopefully it stays this way... :rahrah:

      Wow!

Care to share which branch wrote these T&Cs in 2012?

Somehow, increase in fees is always a contentious issue amongst the parents. The least they can do is to exercise some tact and choose words wisely. Guess this probably gave a bad aftertaste to the parents in the form of a stern warning?

      Hi,

It's been a month in Tanglin branch & we r very encouraged to see our DS exhibiting these following positive traits:
      a) improved listening during circle time
      b) remember his friends' names
      c) opportunities to share his interests verbally
      d) fun & meaningful activities in & out of e classroom
      e) more independent

It's true they have an effective Bilingual immersion prog. However, I think e few things parents need to include could be introduce Math & Science @ a young age... But still too early to say as he is only in N2...it's great they tie in w a book supplier for early reading...
Seeing e older kids enjoying e enrichment activities makes me heartened to know that they r interested in e holistic devt of e kids, not just solely academic focus...

E best part is that e teachers over there exude much warmth n care; I witnessed how e P & teachers helped one another readily with no reference to titles n many of them take turns to soothe or calm e fussy, tantrumy or even rowdy ones when they r in sch. They know just how to relate to them... :thankyou:

      Hi depch,

Nice to know ur gal is @ Tanglin Branch.
What level is ur gal in for 2013?

My boy is so excited in going PSH that once, he chased after another boy carrying the PSH school bag…

Parents, is it true that PSH is stronger in spoken languages but places less emphasis than written?
This seems to be the impression I get after reading this thread. Appreciate any feedback.

Looking forward to hear from moms with kids @ the Tanglin Branch.

We also have a good impression over Ms Ada Teo, the P and hope that she can continue to motivate the teachers and inspire them to nurture the children well…

    • RE: Pat's Schoolhouse

      Hi,

Our DS is starting his N2 @ Tanglin branch come 2013.
We observe that the children there are pretty articulate and comfy in home clothing.

He will be in the afternoon 3hr program so I guess the so called enrichment programs will be out of his reach for the moment unless they have slots for the halfday or full day program.

Like all programs, without experienced teachers or leaders to execute them, they will fail to achieve their intended results.

However, what raises my concern(s) are:
      a) How will the recent departure of The founder impact the organisation? This is the problem when someone so instrumental decides to leave...what happens after that? Who can step in her shoes and carry on the good tradition of 'Celebrating childhood' with innovative practices?

      b) Bilingual immersion program is one of the Hallmarks of PSH. However, many mentioned that their K1-2s are learning less words as compared to the N1-2s in other preschools...do they have workbooks where one can make a direct comparison?

Generally, we saw a lot of happy faces on the children wrt to the centre visits. Our DS was attracted by the bold visual displays as put up by the teachers. There is also a good balance of play corners and activity stations over @ Tanglin branch.

Yes, the toilet area is a issue of concern wrt the hygiene level but on the whole, we feel relaxed in the white walled interior with clearly demarcated display boards, story books' corner and a myriad of children's work.

Like the initial match of lovers, we will view each other with rosy tinted glasses. It's over time when reality sets in, we start to match our ideals with realities. So, I'm hopefully, but @ the same time prudent over over expecting due to the high fees.

Anyway, the initial impression we get from PSH is the teachers & even the P let children be children and it sure looks like a close family.

So we hope, even with the takeover, (oredi years ago by KU) the sense of congenial famili-ness is still prevalent within the centres themselves.

      :xedfingers:
      :snuggles:

      Cheers!
