Yes. Looks like ALPS probably think that was not important to them, an as a result, do not mete out proper advice that could have help b4 the ballot close but call personally only after the ballot to APOLOGISE that won't change the end results.

      Un... Un... Un... Un... Unbelievable
      That's what you are... :siam:

      laptop:
During Primary one registration, schools have NO obligation to call up parents to tell them to withdraw.

It is the sole responsibility of the parents to monitor the situation closely and to act accordingly. When I did the registration for my child, I rang up every 15 mins to monitor the situation. The ALPS staff were very polite and patient despite my numerous calls.

For ALPS, base on previous years' registrations, those who have done sufficient 'homework' should have anticipated that there's a possibility of balloting for <1KM (which means zero chance for 1-2KM). Parents decided to take the risk of balloting should also be mentally prepared to go through P2CS.

The Principal of ALPS was really thoughtful to ring up the parents to explain and apologize for the unfortunate (unforeseen) event. I pity the P for going the extra mile, and yet have to listen to parents who vent their unreasonable angers at her. She has no obligation to make all these phone calls and could have used the time to attend to school matters at hand.
      I second that.
It happened to us as well. 23 Sc < 1km at closed of 11am but 4 sc < 1km turned up in the afternoon with one registered at 4.15pm making a total of 27 sc < 1km fighting for 26 slots. Mind torturing weekend.

You would have to ask yourself if this person had come earlier, would you have moved to another school that doesn't require balloting? If the answer is no, and that you would still have stayed in this school notwithstanding the balloting, then move on because the fact doesn't change whether the person had come in the morning or afternoon or at 4.15pm. Demand is just more than supply and it isn't first come first serve. For all you know, this parent could have been \"forced\" by circumstances beyond his control too, due to another last minute parent in another school... We all don't know.

Wishing you all the best at the balloting next week.

The fact changed coz we tot we have secured a place but because of some playing the last min game and so we are all affected. Like u said, these parents withdrew may be due to another last min in another school. So the problems still lie on last min game. A roller coaster week indeed.
Please do not blame the \"last-minute game\" parents in your case. It is so obvious that you are frustrated because your daughter's spot is not secured and you are afraid you couldn't get a place for your girl during the balloting. It is like saying: \"Why must you guys come and mess up my girl's chances of entering my dream school for her at the last minute?! Go somewhere else!!\"

If during the last minute, the total no. is a nice 26, you will not be complaining here.

I believe most are mummies here in this forum. As mothers, naturally we want the best for our children.

Try to think back when you are pregnant with your little one(s). Do you wish for them to be successful in life? Wishing them to be good-looking? Wishing to give birth to a genius etc? No, I believe we are only hoping that the little one in our tummy will be a HEALTHY baby. Full stop.

We want our children to be happy. So subconsciously, we wish that their path will be "smooth and easy" so they don’t have to "struggle/suffer". But by doing so, they become the so-called "Strawberry generation" - meaning they cannot withstand social pressure or work hard like their parents’ generation.

As parents, we just do what we can within our means. If cannot, nevermind, just have an "Ah Q’s mentality". Life will be so much easier and happier when we are not "chasing the wind".
Same arguments year after year.

Here's a radical idea: admission should be prioritized by the value of your property.
Encourage social mobility for the less fortunate among us while keeping prices of property low.
Live in the most expensive house? Go last.

I can see some merit in this system too. But in the best traditions of Singapore means testing, have to include annual household income too to make it marginally less easy to get around. 😉

I'll include one more factor - ownership of car/price of car.
You own a car? Move backwards.
You own an expensive car? Move further backwards.
Probably solve the congestion problem better than the ERP.

P/S: We all know distance and enough rest is important for a primary school kid's development. No wonder many parents feel the need to drive their kids to school after succeeding in the ballot at 1km or 1-2km.
Some people might be born with a silver spoon but most are those who work hard to achieve what they have today. Why must you guys penalized the rich? Cos they are so-called \"rich\" by your standard? And you couldn't stand \"rich\" people? Why must you bash the privilege?

If the factor to get into a so-called good school is to be poor, then you will see a lot of people acting to be \"poor\"! And the so-called good school will be oversubscribed too!

    • RE: Methodist Girls' School (Primary)

Hi, I assume that most of the mummies here are staying near MGS. My DD will be in MGS next year and I have plans to move near the school.

Am looking at Maplewoods, The Nexus and The Cascadia etc. Any reviews on the condos near the school? Does Maplewoods has a back gate that link directly to MGS etc? Saw some negative reviews on Property Guru about Maplewoods: damp, stuffy, overcrowding, aging estate, roaches and mosquitoes problems, car park flooding etc. Is it really that bad?

      Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

    • RE: All About Home Addresses

      Hi, need advices.

Do we "die die" have to stay in the same rented address (within 1 km from desired school) which we used during balloting and got in?

My present tenancy is going to expired soon and I thought of renting an apartment EVEN NEARER to the desired school than the present one when school starts next year.

Can it be done? Am I breaking any rules?

Hi, From whatever little knowledge I have, there shouldn’t be any issue if you move NEARER to school…

      Thanks, Momof2childs!

Just to share, called up the school to enquire and the staff mentioned it is not an issue as long the new rented address is within 1 km.

The same goes for her primary school. Our nearest schools were the kind of schools that parents on kiasuparents forum would never thought of sending their own kids to and would do everything to avoid their kids going.
So I get abit upset when people advocate distance priority. When I live in a neighbourhood with schools that none of you would choose for your kids while you live in an estate with schools that parents fight tooth and nail to get their kids in, it's easy for you to say that distance rules.

I take it then that you do not believe the Minister when he said that all schools are good schools? So who should go to those schools if even those who live literally next door don't want to?

It seems from every admission exercise that there are primary schools that parents would avoid like the plague. And sometimes these are in the same neighbourhood as very popular schools. Is there something seriously wrong with those schools that MOE needs to address? If that is the case, it is a problem that needs more urgent fixes than tinkling about with the admission system.

I am not so concerned about schools in the Bukit Timah area. I am more curious about why schools like Montford seem to be perpetually undersubscribed while other schools in the neighbourhood like Hougang Primary and Xinming have to ballot within 1km. I am not even talking about the nearby Rosyth.

      这个才叫一针见血!
Anyone can choose a school near their neighborhood IF they want. Why do we have to penalize a mother for going an extra mile? 🤷

I think nobody is seeing himself or herself as of a higher class or better being than the other. Every parent strives to provide the best he can afford for his child, and every parent strives to get his child into the best school he deems for his child. There is no need to get so personal with your comments when you can't get what you want.

      Agreed! :celebrate:
