My girl is in Sec 3 and she does 2 langs, 2 sciences, 2 humanities and 2 maths. Majority of the girls do this combi. (considered science based?) as this should put them in good stead to enter JC. Some girls do 3 sciences but they must obtain very good scores in science and overall in sec 2. Some girls do combined science and 2 Humanities (not very sure about this combi).
For her Humanities subjects, she opted SS/elect Geography and Economics. Econs is similar to JC econs but simpler than A levels.
Unless the girl fails science/maths in sec 2, she will not be asked to do combined science.

RE: Upper Secondary Economics
Just wondering anyone’s kids taking economics, i.e. as a O’ Level subject? My daughter is interested but just wondering whether it is a difficult subject to study compared to Geography, History or Lit. Also, I’m a bit concerned as it cannot be considered as a R1 subject. In other words, she must do well in the other SS/Humanities subject.

RE: Tanjong Katong Girls' School
Good for you, Marisstella. Not in my case though. While the logistics arrangement was satisfactory, I felt the purpose of PTM was not met. Since we only meet 1 assigned teacher, I would expect the teacher to have the feedback of all subject teachers and able to have a meaningful discussion with the parents. The assigned teacher looked at my daughter’s results and asked her what she intended to do with the subjects she fared poorly. Self-reflection is one thing but since she’s new to secondary school subjects, the subject teacher’s constructive feedback and pointers would be useful. I know we can speak to the subject teacher (via email/phone) if we want to(but really a hassle since PTM is on last day of school) but if that’s the case, the PTM is not necessary. My son’s school PTM was very well-organised as we can make appts to meet up to 3 teachers during the PTM. To cater to this, each level’s PTM is held on different days. Each session lasts max 20 mins so we could have a more detailed discussion. I have provided feedback in the online survey and hope PTM can be improved.

RE: School Of The Arts, Singapore
\"Sotamama, that's what I heard too. Am not that familiar with the IB route so was wondering if just getting 200ish would make the IB route too difficult for the child to cope.
Would you happen to know the diff between IB and say normal O level track I terms of workload etc? In your opinion, would a child who goes in with ave score of 230 find it hard to cope?\"
My Yr 3 son joined SOTA with psle score of 20x. We were worried whether he can cope with IB but then, in a mainstream school, we believe he will struggle too. So far, he was able to cope. Homework is definitely manageable in the first 2 years. The pace in the 1st 2 years was not so punishing and it allowed him to progress and enjoy learning. Overall, we thought he did pretty well especially in Visual Arts and Humanities subjects. Even for Maths, a subject he struggled in primary school. He told me recently that Math is now his fave subject -
RE: School Of The Arts, Singapore
If I recalled correctly from last year’s briefing, IBCC is for selected students who are likely/ has the potential to pursue the art form as a career, ie they will likely go on to the art based universities. Hence, the selection is stringent as they will do lesser academic subjects or the academic subjects combination may not meet the usual university requirements. I did not really pay attention to this part of the briefing as IBCC is only applicable to a small number of students.
Gender ratio is prob 1 boy to 4 girls, with more boys in VA but then VA has the highest number of students. -

May I ask the current VA students, when u submit your art portfolio, did u go for art classes to prep your portfolio or do it yourself at home?
Any parents sends your child to art schools to prep their portfolio?
My son is in Yr 3 now. We prepared our own portfolio for the audition even though my son attended NAFA art classes in primary school. We selected some from the art class but mostly from his primary school CCA projects (info-comm) as well as his drawing/drooling at home. It's important to be yourself and not dress up your portfolio. The interviewers can tell. -
RE: Tanjong Katong Girls' School
My girl is interested in the String Ensemble CCA but she’s not able to play any string instrument although she’s learning piano and has Grade 5 theory and grade 4 piano. Is the chance of getting into the CCA slim? Usually, how many such students do they accept?
