octoberbaby:
What kind of portfolio RI is looking at? If a student doesn't have any achievements so far, how can he show the portfolio? will he be invited to sit GAT?

There are 3 types of DSA. Via:

      1) GEP Domain (the child is in Gifted Education Program)
      2) Academic for Mainstream
      3) Sports

For GEP boys, they would have a porfolio they have done from P4 to P6. So, they can choose any to present/talk during the interview. The child only need to bring his porfolio if he is shortlisted for interview.

For Mainstream boys, I think during the DSA application which is online, you dont need to submit any porfolio. You will have to enter your P4 to P6 results including other non-academic achievements. The boy will then have to sit for GAT (General Ability test). If he pass GAT, he will be asked to prepare a project to present...the topic of the project will be given if the boy pass GAT.

For Sports, the boy will have to go for a trial.

You may want to refer to RI website for more information.

      Totally agree.

Yes, our children should not be confined to mugging syllabus and text books.

View third language not a subject but an interest our child wants to pursue. We will be amaze how fast they could pick up a new language!

Our child needs self enrichment besides studying text books…Encourage them to read widely…and learn new things and skills not related to academic subjects.

This holiday, I let me son read any books he likes. He is reading "The Cartoon Introduction to Economics" and "Quantum - A Guide for Perplexed" - his choice of books. Honestly, I never think I will be interested to read. He is also playing DS games and doing sports.

    • RE: All About GEP

I am happy with NYPS so far.

My son’s P4 teachers were very encouraging and patience. They also ensure they are in touch with the parents. I got feedback about my son regularly…maybe because he can be a pain in the class sometimes.

He dislikes his P5 teachers because he thinks that some of them are not so knowledgable and not open to new ideals and suggestions. But, during parent-teacher meet session, I find the teachers understand my son very well and they are trying to do their best. My son can make lifes difficult for the teacher by posing challenging questions.

I think P6 is the best year for him. He has very supportive teachers. His P6 teachers have been able to ‘connect’ with him and handle him very well. There have been alot of encouragement, teaching him the importance of process and good habits of mind. He matures so much and most important of all - he enjoys going to school and see his teachers being able to guide him.

I am not sure if doing more drafts will get more marks. It is true that the teachers in NYPS do not usually need more than 1 draft, it does not mean our children are short changed. Do you want your child to do draft after draft when there are more than 1 projects going on with deadlines close to each other? What is the purpose of having draft after draft? From my son’s experience, 1 draft is good enough to produce good work if the teacher provides sufficient comments and inputs to make it into final product. Why subject our children to doing more work by doing more drafts (unless parents are thinking of helping)? Doing work the smart way is more productive.

While it is true competition is stiff in NYPS, our children should not feel pressurized to do their best or to be selected for competition, debates and etc. Our children must learn to do their best all the time not because they want to be selected for some events or competition. The teacher choose most appropriate pupils for a reason. If our child is not selected, it is not because they are no good - it is just that they are not suitable. Our child will still develop to their full potential without going for those competition or debates by having our consistent support and guidance.

I was quite taken aback by what my son told me few weeks ago. This is what he said: "It is better to be a small fish in a big occean to learn survival skills and push oneself to do better rather than a big fish in a small pond where there is no competition which is not the real world!"

All GE schools should be the same. Our child needs to adapt and learn new skills…most importantly enjoy the journey.

      Good luck.

      Dino:

wow jin power..... those kids over there not belonging to this category must be feeling damn stressed and disappointed, even thou they have good scores below 250..... pressuring envirnoment......

some parents like to put their child in this competitive environment.
      Other parents do not.

      What I saw:

      No one compare scores.
      Parents hugging children.
      Teachers encourage every single child.

      Lowest score was not mentioned.
Names of children scoring 270 and above were called out.
The highest T-score boy was not singled out.

2 all rounder pupils (above 270, role model for good character and active in CCA) were mentioned.

I didn't feel parents want their children to compete with each other...they just want their children to do their best and they give the support.

Pressure is usually self inflicted. If the child has done his/her best and as parents we give them the encouragement and support, there is nothing to compare against each other.

There are always late boomers. Every child will blossom in their own ways.

As parents, we want our child to be in a conducive learning environment where teachers and parents work together to help the child to reach his/her full potential.
I think NYPS did well this year.

About 40 obtained 270 and above.

Close to 50% (if I remember correctly about 47% to 48%) of cohort scored >=250.

NYPS takes in 75-100 pupils from GEP enrollment each year.

Even after deducting 240 - 100, we still have about 140 mainstream scoring >=250.
Like what Yien Mummy Yien said, nothing to be proud of. Just sharing the figures and anyone can interpret as they like.

Some people were asking for this list so I'll get the ball rolling. Please post if you have info on your kids' school's top scorer. Just post the school and score and I'll add it to the list. Please note that the score you provide should be BEFORE HCL. If you spot any errors, do let me know as well. Thanks.
