Hi
Hi Musing, thanks for sharing.Musings\" post_id=\"1993111\" time=\"1598759883\" user_id=\"7539:
I have a Y3 child in NUSH. It is a great school for students who wish to specialise in STEM subjects but the exposure and consequently nurturing of students in the humanities is limited. For e.g. there is inclusion of literature within the English module only in Y1. For Y2-Y3, students select and specialise in 1 humanities module which can be literature, history, geography or music or art. This means effectively after Y1, students only get exposed to 1 humanities subject. It seems less exposure than even O lvl schools where students need to study humanities in S1 and S2.
For my child who is ‘adverse’ to humanities, it is great and he spends time on his STEM subjects including Olympiad training. For others who may prefer more exposure to humanities, this could be a drawback.
Having said that, students who are keen on humanities definitely have many avenues to pursue - you can choose to take part in English Interest Group and model United Nations etc.
Sorry, can I ask, in NUSH, if I’m not wrong they have own third language classes (no need to go to MOELC)? I try to recall where I read this but couldn’t find the info.
Does your child take third language?
Thank you so much
NUSH has in house 3rd language classes for French, Japanese, Malay, Chinese only. They need to pay additional fees per month for French and Japanese (in addition to school fees). So students who are keen can choose the NUSH class or the MOELC class, there is no obligation to take the NUSH class. But students who choose German or Spanish will need to go to MOELC. My child doesn’t take 3rd lang. -

I agree with Cool Nurse. Personally I prefer an all rounded education that includes good exposure to CCA, humanities and mother tongue. But I understand some students are keen to have an early specialisation in Math and Science, then NUSH is the perfect choice.I have a Y3 child in NUSH. Another say again PAP will win big
PAP will win big for GE2020
Managing editor and co-founder of online lifestyle publication Asia 361, Katherine Goh, wrote an article that was published on Alvinology.com saying that PAP will win big this time (‘Statistics Don’t Lie – Why The PAP Will Win Big For GE2020‘, 1 Jul).
“Statistics don’t lie,” the article said.
“For this reason alone, one can boldly predict the People’s Action Party (PAP) will win BIG for the Singapore General Elections 2020 (GE2020). In fact, they may even make a clean sweep, taking back the previously Workers’ Party (WP)-held wards of Hougang Single Member Constituency (SMC) and Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC).”
The article said that it has been empirically proven that voters will lean towards the incumbent ruling party in times of crisis. “There is no worse crisis than the current COVID-19 pandemic-turned-economic-recession, which is definitely in PAP’s favour,” it added.
It went on to quote the example of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, whose ruling coalition scored the largest parliamentary election victory in South Korea recently.
“President Moon’s approval rating shot up from 42% to 57% during the COVID-19 crisis — a considerable difference of 15%. Again, add this difference to PAP’s popular vote in GE2011 and GE2015. The results are 75.1% and 84.9% respectively.”
“Even if you were to take the best performing opposite ward, Hougang SMC and add on a 15% swing to PAP, they go from 42.3% in GE2015 and 37.9% in GE2011 to 57.3% and 52.9% respectively.”
“Sorry to burst the bubbles of all the opposition supporters. The PAP is going to win big in the election and it is likely even Hougang will be wiped out.”
In any case, if these experts are right, PAP Sec-Gen Lee Hsien Loong will be able to do what former PM Goh Chok Tong couldn’t do previously – to attain a clean sweep with zero opposition in Parliament. Mr Lee himself will have achieved the same as what his father did in the 60s and 70s, a 100 per cent domination of the Parliament – a world’s first among all the first world countries in the globe. -

I dont think my question is that difficult to answer. Let me simplify it further
By birth, Halimah would be a Indian
By law ( as decreed in the Presidentisl Election) she would be a Malay
Which do you agree?
So if i am a Chinese and is Muslim, i become a Malay?
https://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/doubts-about-presidential-hopefuls-not-being-malay-enough-are-off-track

Wearing masks from day one is likely to have prevented the CB as the experience in HK and Taiwan show.
How can the drawdown of reserves be prevented even if we acted against WHO and experts advice and insist on masks from day 1? The drawdown has to do with the closing of borders around the world and affecting everyone’s economy and will continue to affect everyone’s livelihood for the foreseeable future. Even countries like Sweden who refused to lockdown took as much a hit to their economy as others. This is an unprecedented pandemic where there is no consensus among experts as to the correct strategy. Every country with the means provided support to their most needy and badly hit businesses such as airlines. I am grateful for the way our govt handled this - that is not to say we could not do better but hindsight is always 20-20. And yes if we had swung to the left as the opposition had been crying out for a long time and that continues to be their rallying cry, we will not have the reserves to tide us through this crisis.Musings\" post_id=\"1983676\" time=\"1593789115\" user_id=\"7539:
We are not unique. Qatar and UAE have high number of infection and very low number of fatalities
Macau, HK, South Korea and Taiwan doing extremely well in keeping both their number of infections and fatalities low.
Nothing magical, social distancing and wear a mask when outside.
Prices of surgical masks have been trending downward, from $35 a box of 50 to $10 for the same box now.
I don’t feel angry just disappointed that our Covid-19 response wasn’t better. And it had severe consequences, CB measures and drawing down of our reserves for something that could have been prevented in the first place !!
The 2 months of CB probably wiped out $50 billion off our GDP as domestic consumption nosedived and FWs kept away from their factories
While borders have been closed to human traffic, the exchange of goods and services still go on and that’s where Singapore shouldn’t be too impacted if not for the CB given our good network connectivity and status as a key maritime/aviation hub
Our handling of the Covid-19 situation could have been better and raiding the reserves is just using money to address self-inflicted wounds !
We could have avoided all that just by insisting on wearing masks from day one.
HK, Taiwan are exceptions becos of their mask wearing culture. Their decision turn out to be right and did not have to lockdown. But they also closed borders and implemented stringent social distancing which wreaked havoc on their economy. Domestic consumption nosedived in HK notwithstanding. HK kids did not go to school for months since CNY. It was as gd as a lockdown even if they didn’t call it one. No country in the world is spared from economic fallout, masks or no masks.
https://amp.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/hong-kong-economy/article/3082769/coronavirus-hong-kongs-economy-slumps-89-cent
Precisely becos Spore is a maritime/aviation hub, we are severely impacted, no planes were flying no country wanted to export n hoarded everything. Border controls means nothing flows. Spore also provides logistical services all of which is dependent on the continuity of global trade which basically grinded to a halt. -

Estéema\" post_id=\"1983691\" time=\"1593810862\" user_id=\"66413:
This is my view too. there were things we could have done better but we took incremental steps methodically based on the best available scientific evidence at that time. People have forgotten that the mask wearing policy is only relevant becos there can be asymptomatic cases who are infectious but this knowledge of asymptomatic cases being infectious was only established way after the first wave. It wld not be prudent back in Jan/Feb to lockdown earlier or risk a shortage of masks for frontline staff if we acted without scientific evidence. I am glad that once the evidence was there, the govt was not afraid to change course.
I’ve a different view.
Masks issue is a hindsight thingy & it’s not realistic to hv ppl all dispense surgical masks daily in competition to our frontliners or frontliners worldwide when we were caught unprepared.
The virus then hv not reached pandemic then & every govt & world virologists we’re watching closely before It reaches ORANGE DORSCON & wear masks order.
No, it’s not true we were printing masks at backend. We’re a very small country with no space to grow our edibles much less possess raw materials for masks making. Govt was trying to recall our masks making machine fr Taiwan In Feb, but alas some delays & tardiness there delaying the arrival and perception was govt was hiding not transparent. There was some episodes of miscommunication & Taiwan gossip media was making remarks how we were broke & had to close our terminals, and how panic we got & went berserk emptying supermkts & irrational hoarding with seemingly convincing graphs & statistics (not unlike some oppositions claims with passé statistics & poor u’stand’g of purpose & intent). Truth is technicians need to set up again & it took awhile.
Think in this perspective, and I do u’stand ppl can get very anxious wrt to life & death of self, family & loved ones to ‘demand’ ALL citizens get all the privileges of testing, of free medical, free meals (err I do mean 1st priority bcoz it’s fr our treasure box lah). So, if I share that the govt wld hv been finger pointed for non-prudent use of collective funds on everybody & it doesn’t guarantee anything anyway. Worst we will demand daily/weekly repeated testing till we empty test kits & frontliners energy to calm our nerves? Wld we not think we were entitled such privileges & expect our govt to accede? Rmbr, we hv reserves & naturally an envy of the world when many govt don’t even hv masks to issue docs & nurses, or guard their ventilators so tight not responding to those areas needing it more critically?
Let me bring u the other perspective - >5 mil residents to tests vs segregate >1.3K FW, Tests & quarantine/treat to keep safe fr main community. This reduces the incidence of endangering the community to active infection & pullout cases detected in community for treatment. Saving >3.7K testing funds for CB WFH/HBL support funds, Bz recovery & job creation, etc. Wld this help calm our nerves to know this govt had spent time deliberating with frontliners, the most effect & cost saving way to tackle the crisis? I’m not giving accolades to our leaders alone, I trust more the frontline docs who are seen sacrificing a few months of no family contact (not even return home) and adv our leaders what resources they need to keep us safe & treat those infected to keep the low fatality of 26?
In Taiwan, Thailand, Msia, Saudi & middle eastern countries FW’s treatment are abhorrent - FW hv to pay for their own housing; spread all over the country non in dormitories; some live in ‘slave’ conditions at unhygienic worksites. There’s no proper toilet only makeshift aluminum planks outside open areas, cooking next to their bunkers or makeshift beds stacked with stones & bricks.
The other thing I thot about is the FWs’ hygiene habits. We all know it’s damn hard to correct kids habits & even harder for us as adults. At least I wld admit some things are hard to unlearn for an old foggy like myself. I’m not claiming the recurring high numbers fr >1K daily till todate 2-fig cases are the only outcome of poor stubborn ill acquired hygiene, but I suspect it includes culture of buddies holding hands & exhibit warm feelings for their own company (同胞, 老乡, etc). It’s probably hard for them to stick physical distancing in their head, or wearing their masks correctly or even washing frequent Enid. Looking at our own community after Phase 2, many are still tardy with their social distancing, letting masks slip below the nose for better breathing, touching face & frequent adjustment of masks (high risks of touching virus if it’s on the surface). We see cases in hawker centres, at parks, in shops, supermkts ....). I’m not blaming the FWs but looking at this puzzling numbers that hv not abated. Very curious myself.
This journey with COVID crisis helped humanize us abit more & we’re acknowledging we can do better & we can improve for the sake of readiness to prevent ano hit on dense cluttered living conditions. MND & MOM hv stepped in to build newly designed dormitories by the end of the year, flexible enuf to segregate any FW within the unit if need for quarantine & the density will be less. Ventilation were designed to contain virus spread. I really won’t say this govt is not worth their salt. Only a few unlikeable maybe, for the way we see them as w/o communication flair, missteps & misspoken, sounding urgent matters they know how things work but hard fight to sit & design a nice way to communicate to help ppl see & u’stand West they’re doing. So, yes a lot of hardwork but lacks EQ, lack affable disposition, unlikeable tone... Don’t know leh, sound like one of my cousin (still single) looking for the perfect partner. Alamak, he has almost wasted 1/2 of his life (estimate lah). 😅
So I see the govt hardwork & respond in action to solve problems that arose. This is unusual experience and a steep learning curve for eveyone but no one can claim perfection much as tho we wld like our govt to be more than human to sustain such sudden pressure to step up with watertight, guaranteed, chop & stamp service to us, the taxpayer. I beg to let them be human & to be imperfect, to give them some slag & be less demanding.
These hv been accounted for by action & we’re mainly safe, so long as we continue to cooperate diligently coz many countries were careless resulting in subsequent waves. We’ve updated records of 26 fatalities mainly elderlies & 1 currently in ICU. All the big numbers mainly FWs. Cool it guys/gals. Don’t stress yourself. Prepare & mentally brave ourselves - cld be 2nd wave, cld be the pandemic pig flu & even more to come looking at our climate changes
On the other hand, what if the govt had lockdown in Jan/Feb and made mask wearing compulsory which will cause much pain to businesses and people’s lives and the scientific evidence showed later that it wasn’t necessary. Won’t people turn around and bay for blood that the govt’s actions killed the economy and caused unnecessary suffering to people who lost jobs and livelihoods? Damn if you do, damn if you don’t.
I was one of those parents v unhappy the govt did not close schools earlier becos the atmosphere of fear and virus hitting our young ones took hold. But during CB, I saw the huge effect the lockdown had on my child’s classmates (at least 50%) who basically did not submit homework or did HBL for 2 months. They are from the lower income n decision to close schools meant they were left to languish w/o any family support. Mind you this is the PSLE cohort. There is no way these kids will be prepared for PSLE now that they lost 2 months during CB. My sis who teaches in a secondary school wth NA/NT students said many similarly languished at home w/o basic food n support and pleaded to go back to school to have some sense of stability in their lives. Thats when I had to agree OYK’s decision was right. To date, there are no cases of transmission thru schools.
My heart goes out to the people in this group who had suffered the worst and will continue to suffer - and these are not people who are on KSP or FB or social media. -

Singapore given airtime by some of the most popular media learning how Spore kept our fatalities VERY low with high numbers of patients infected by COVID.
