Hi, may I know how many times can a child re-take the following papers?


O level HCL - is it only one sitting, at Sec 4 for IP/Express stream students?
H1 CL - 3 sittings (JC1 End of Year, JC2, mid year and JC2 - end of year)?

Also, any comments on the difficulty level and examination demands for O Level HCL vs H1 CL? I have compared the syllabi for both and it seems that H1 CL is less demanding (For example, for Composition, HCL requires writing on two topics while H1 CL only one topic).

Hi Ganjiongspider, I can only comment for JH1 and 2 (Sec 1 and 2) and based on my child timetable and schedule.

Mon, Wed & Fri around 7.30am, Tue and Thurs around 8.30am
Mon and Wed - end at 3pm
Tue and Thurs - end at 2 pm as these are the days set aside for Third Language/AEP/MEP.
Fri - end at 1pm

My child is in Performing Arts CCA and are held on Mon and Fri, from 4.30 to 7.30pm.

By the way, if your child is considering NJC, please note that
1) NJC has compulsory boarding programme (6 weeks in Sec 1, 4 weeks in Sec 2)
2) NJC doesn't have uniform groups for CCA

I was in HK during CNY with my family in 2012 and 2014. During the days before first day of CNY, the shops have extended shopping hours (even up to midnight) and all eateries are opened. On CNY Eve, we arranged to have reunion dinner at restaurants in hotels [I emailed restaurants directly to reserve] and visited the flower market in Victoria Park [very very crowded].

On first day of CNY, most shops, especially those in shopping malls are open by noon time. We visited the 10,000 buddha in one year and Wong Tai Sin Temple [very crowded but good crowd control] in the other year in the morning followed by lunch and shopping.

Most local eateries (cha chang tang) are closed but fast food chains (MacDonalds, Starbucks etc) and restaurants in hotels are opened during CNY. Some 'popular eateries' will be closed on CNY Day 1 and 2 and we didn't visit the outlying islands - just used the MTR and trams to travel in HK Island and Kowloon.

There is a night parade one CNY Day 1 [went only in 2012] and fireworks display on CNY Day 2 [went in 2014]. You can check out schedule and location at

When will know whether my ds get the 3rd language he has selected?

Your child will receive the option form which will indicate the outcome of his 3rd language when he/she reports to his assigned secondary school tomorrow. Then he/she will need to exercise the option and go to MOELC to register and buy books. Usually, it is on 30 Dec.

If your child did not get the 3rd language that he/she wants, you can go to MOELC to fill in an appeal form to transfer or to be put on waitlist.

Hi bjlsh, I cannot comment on French as my children do German and Japanese. Learning a new language takes effort, and having an interest and friends to practice with helps. Both my children picked up some basic German (using Duolingo)/Japanese (CDs from an Aunt who learns Japanese as an adult) during the Dec hols and it helps as MOE LC teaches at a fast pace since the students attend lessons only once a week.

For NJC, as long as the student takes a third language, the grade will be included in the report book - regardless of whether the student does well or not, and is used to compute the overall percentage.
For some other IP schools, the grade for third language is considered only if it helps to improve the overall performance.

Have to be winning art competitions prior? What does the portfolio required for the interview and selection process need to have? Any information greatly appreciated.

Hi MittenMom, there are no pre-requisites for AEP. During reporting day, NJC will make available the date for AEP selection test. Interested applicants will take the selection test and can bring along their portfolio if they want to. I don't think there is an interview. The results will be made known by the first day of school as students taking AEP are grouped into one class (similarly, those taking MEP are grouped into one class). After being selected, the students go through several AEP lessons before committing to taking it for 4 years. My P6 DS is interested in attending NJC but is concerned about the gender ratio. Would like to ask the parents of boys / boys at NJC how they feel about having many more girls than boys in the class.
Also, is the curriculum very rigorous with many projects?

Hi ion, DS was from a co-ed primary school so he was quite used to the co-ed environment in NJC and was not perturbed by the boy to girl ratio (about 1:2). He said that the boys in his class are very close as they bonded together well, especially during the hostel period. The class size is small with 25 students per class (9 boys to 16 girls - so not that many more girls to boys). During the first year, they do many subjects (besides the usual Languages, Science, Maths, Geography and History, there are subjects like Thinking, Governance and Society, Arts, Music - and all are graded). There are projects assigned for almost all subjects but these are spaced out and somehow DS was able to manage. Hope the above information is of some help.

How about those kids that happened to have stomachache or anxiety during PSLE and so fallen short of COP by 1 or 2 points?

How about those students that are all rounders (good in sports/arts/music but not good enough for DSA but better than most other students) who fallen short of COP by 1 or 2 points?

The message given by MOE by tightening appeal requirements is that PSLE is very important. Your other achievements are not as important as PSLE. Is MOE stepping backwards after so much talk about holistic education?

If only the goalpost were bigger by 6 inches, the ball would have gone in. If only the tackle did not miss, the player would not have been true on goal. If only the player was not injured. If only.

Maybe this is the holistic education that MOE is all about, turning this \"disappointment\" into life's lesson and from negative to positive. It's not the end of world if you miss by 1-2 points. It's how you deal with it that separates the boys/girls from men/women. You don't get a 2nd chance in sports or in a recital and if you don't do well, it's up to you to work harder to prove yourself at the next marker.

If only you DC gets higher t score than the other person and can get into the sch of his/her (or maybe the parents') choice by merit, so no one can blame MOE, the schools with affiliation, the difference in COP in 2015 vs 2016 intake...
