• RE: Police investigating 'unnatural death' of 14-year-old boy

Read so many speculations here and almost all accusing the police.

Just curious, what if your dd is the victim here, being molested by this boy and you are the one who went with her to make the police report, would you still think in the same way as what you had posted earlier? Would you have acted or think differently? Would you have insisted the police take immediate action to charge the criminal?
This boy needed bail, the offence could be serious, means the degree of molest may had been serious.

Alright, go ahead and keep harping on this, I prefer to appreciate the big things they have gotten right. The next time your child takes part in a competition and wins a trophy, but fails to inform you he/she is coming back an hour late, make sure you keep highlighting the failure of communication.

Your child can win all the prizes in the world but would it be right when he doesn't have a modicum of respect for you? What is the big picture and what has been gotten right or wrong, the fact that he's a winner or the other fact he doesn't have any respect for his elders?

The right thing to do is to teach your child he has made the 6 choices and he must take responsibility for them. The right thing to do is to let your child know there is nothing wrong with his T score, and there is nothing wrong with the dream sch not accepting the appeal. He has done his best, that is the result he got, he may miss his dream sch by a few points but that's ok. He should be braved to accept reality and move on. He should continue to try his best and work towards the next dream school. The right thing to do is to let your child know the sch he is posted to is as good as any other sch and he can excel in it as well as if he got into his dream school.
And the right step to start doing things right comes from the parents.

Why want to appeal to get in to a sch w cop higher or equal to your T score? Wouldn’t the poor kid be very stress to be at the bottom of the pile? Don’t go for the name or cop of sch. Choose a sch that your child will feel happy in. Look at the vision and mission of the sch, find one that matches your family value system. Look at the culture or tradition practiced in the sch, choose one that you will like your child to immerse in. Look at the students’ discipline and behavior, choose one that you want your child to develop. There are many ways to choose a sch and there are 6 choices. The last thing to do is to choose a sch based on cop and be the last one who squeezed in.
Does anyone has experience traveling via Shinkansen from tokyo to Osaka? What's the most economical type of tickets to buy? I intend to stay in Osaka for a few days and travel to Kyoto and Nara as a day trip, what kind of traveling options anyone can recommend? Thanks in advance.

Get ordinary car tickets is good enough. No need to pay more for green car.

With the Japan rail pass, you can also travel from Osaka to Kyoto and Nara on the shinkansen.
If you have the time, you may wish to make a trip to Hiroshima to visit the Atomic Bomb Dome or a trip to Miyajima (ferry ride included in the Japan Rail pass). Miyajima is a gem to visit besides the scenary and the oysters.
Oh yes, both Miyajima and Nara have plenty of deer.
Sounds nice. Are these suitable for trip in Dec?

• RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

Just want to share a bit, just my own opinion. I’m not an expert in this area, so don’t take my views too seriously. I’ve 2 kids, so the observations are made from raising them and observing their classmates and friends’ kids.

1) I believe everyone is gifted in their own way, so I hope those parents who’s kids are not doing well academically don’t think that their kids are not gifted. Some may be gifted academically, some gifted in only particular subjects eg maths or language, some gifted in music, some in sports, some in EQ, some in technical skills, some in oratorical skill. Everyone in gifted in one or more areas.
2) I believe giftedness cannot be groomed or erased. That is, if you try to groom your kid in music and he’s not gifted, he will take a longer and harder work to reach same level as a person who’s gifted. If a person is gifted in music, even if she doesn’t receive formal music training, she will still be able to do well on her own. This is the reason why we didn’t accept GEP offer when my child was offered. I don’t believe that if he doesn’t go GEP he will lose out in any way. I rather he spends time doing some interesting cca or learns a skill instead of building on further academic achievements which he’s already good at. Diversified abilities are important.
3) I believe every kid have some problems whether they are gifted or not. Problems mentioned in posts here are not particular to gifted kids only, they can be observed in any kids (as I mentioned all kids are gifted). Different kids have different problems and different extend of the problems. So I hope we as parents don’t use our kids’ high IQ or giftedness to be the excuse for the socially unacceptable behaviors, we must teach the child to overcome this, so that they can blend into society well as this is more important than having a PhD.

Hey my postings are not meant to be disrespectful to any SAHM.

Please don’t be offended.
What I’m trying to say is everyone should be responsible for our own decision. It’s so easy to blame the govt, blame the society, blame everyone else when you don’t get what you want. That’s really not right.

So you can work 8am to 1pm? Where would you and your kids get lunch? You can rush home to cook? You need to eat out? What’s the diff between no lunch + have cooked dinner and having both lunch and dinner cook by maid?

So you think you contribute a lot by being a SAHM? Your kids need you to be around. Your think they can’t be looked after by the maid cos maid never put in their best effort to cook for them of ensure they eat healthily? You can’t send to childcare cos your kid will be deprived of bonding time w u, childcare have big child : teacher ratio, your kid won’t get 1-1 attention.

You are in fact trying very hard to justify your value being a SAHM. Share with you a few egs of SAHM I’ve personally known and who think very highly of themselves.
1) too sian to cook today, will cook fishball noodles for the kids for lunch. Well, if the childcare center or maid cook that, it’s deemed non-nutritious, lazy and cost cutting. But if it’s the SAHM it’s totally fine, u r in that mood that day, it’s totally justifiable that U don’t cook proper lunch. Anyway u told yourself there’s bonding time, u r eating w your kids, how totally impt that is.
2) u stayed at home thinking u r gg to nurture your kids, teach them and tutor them. Then u realise even the pri sch syllabus is beyond u, no choice have to outsource to tutor. But u still justify your value as a SAHM, u see, at least u r at home when your kids come back, that’s so impt!!
3) u have toddles at home and they r making a mess w their toys and taking all your time and draining all your energy looking after them, u really have no time and energy to mop floor today. U tell yourself its totally fine, u r overwhelmed after all. But if it’s the maid or childcare center, it can’t be forgiven. How could they be so unhygienic? How could they subject your kids to this kind of environment, your kids can’t crawl on that dirty floor!

Ok, not all SAHM r like that. I’ve known some really super SAHM too.
Well the purpose of writing this is just to shed some lights on what some SAHM do. None of the taxpayers want to give u a single cents, pls accept that.
