These days, the army is a lot more civilised. The verbal abuse and drills are a fraction of what it was in the past, and physical abuse and mental torture are also no longer tolerated. Considering that 80% of the things done in the past would probably be subjected to court martial now, it's not that difficult for the boys to take it as it come. Besides, it's only 2 years whereas the older folks have to face it for 2.5 years!

      I guessed as much. Why?
Cos when I did my NS it was supposedly heaven c.f. to when my cousins (12-14 yr older than me) did theirs. My aunt said my cousins would cry when the booked out during the weekends… They were trained by the Israelis.

And when I heard my mates said what they had to ensure when they became BMT instructors (unlike me who got a tough posting), I was surprised. They said they had to ensure the recruits have min 8 hr sleep every night, and cannot do more than 20 push-ups… Enough said.

If within the 2.5 yr when i was in NS, the change was so marked, I'm sure in the 20+ yr since then, it would be much more obvious.

What's the result? … Sad to say, the outcome could possibly be a generation of more gu niang soldiers
I dare said the army made a man of us boys when we enlisted. I sure hope we can continue to say that of the younger generation.

I would to add to the no more then 20 push up.
      1) the 20 push up must complete within 40min. can you imagine in actual they can make you hold it there for how long? (not many instructor actually know this)
      2) they is no rule about improper push up and start from zero... so do till 19, instructor not happy start from zero lor
Elder boy intends to use ear plugs during sleeping IF he cant tahan the snoring of other platoon mates.

Is it advisable to wear ear plugs during sleeping?

I was thinking he is more likely to be dead tired to hear any snoring if any 😂

It's never advisable to use ear plugs when sleeping, no matter where you are.

You may not be able to hear fire drills or command to evacuate during real emergency situations. Snoring should really be the least of his concern.

Agree - best not to wear ear plugs during sleep.

The ear plugs are for live firings, both rifle range, and in my case, demolition.

It is important to be aware of the situation even when asleep, especially in field camps. We often slept inside or near our M113 for overnight exercises. If there is any 'surprises', we might have to pack up (there is almost nothing to pack except your weapon) and move out in a hurry. If there is anyone who is unaware of it and is still sound asleep near the M113 when it moves off in the darkness… I don't want to imagine the consequences.

And it's also true that one is likely to be too tired to bother about the snoring - the body is adaptable and will live with this.

Not ideal in civilian world, but that's how NS life is...
it actually happen before and got roll over :nailbite:

My boy says this works for him.

      for NS? is scented?

      1) certain areas mosquitoes seems extremely larger, and somehow most repellent don't work on those?
      2) If is scented, it cannot be use? imagine, in field operation. enemy will able to smell the nice scent and you be dead.

same thing as why now they those polish the boots to shining. As it will reflect sunlight, and it will give away the soldier position.

I need to know check whether scented.

If scented, can be used in the bunks?
in bunk is ok. But I seriously will consider using that.
he might get laugh at using baby products.

is old chong pang market that was in the middle of kampong sembawang and not the current chong pang. It was in the time that armour vehicle still can convoy on public road.

that place in evening is very quiet.

      Cool!
Imagine riding this to a hawker centre to tabao food :yikes:

Yup. Mine did have this sophisticated 'head dress', as this one is clearly for SADA, while mine was for other function.

But you got the idea. If we drove ours to nearest hawker centre in Boon Lay… the same SOF that stormed the highjacked plane would have been activated to look for the hungry soldiers… :rotflmao:
I did too at the old chong pang market. 7 of these but the APC version without the top. park right infront where many rush in to tabao.
