RE: KTKLN for indo maid?
Hi all, does the contract need to be new to make the ktkln? To clarify, my maid’s contract (done at the embassy) expires in Nov this year, but shes going back in June so I need to renew her ktkln card before that. Can I do it with the contract that has a lifespan of less than a yr left? Does anyone know? Thanks in advance!

RE: All About Autism
As I understand it, once its in your records it remains in the records. Kinda like a health condition, like asthma. So if u apply for civil service, the records remain.

Yup goes on record with MOE. I had his diagnosis done by a pte clinic so apparently its still not on his record yet.
Just curious, but what 'registration' was she referring to? Does she just mean that it goes on his record with school/MOE? Glad your son is coping better now.not on facebook:
hi all. my son was diagnosed with aspergers last year, and since then we have been signing him up for social skills lessons, OT, martial arts etc. The intervention, with God's will, has helped him so much, to the point that I wondered whether the diagnosis was even correct in the 1st place. Maybe he's just a late developer, I thought. Next year he's going to pri 1 in a mainstream school and I asked his psychologist what are the ramifications of telling the school his diagnosis. She said once it's been registered, he will get light duties for NS and he won't be able to obtain scholarships (that to me sounds very weird.) Then I asked if i should get him rediagnosed. She said his is mild, but he clearly has ASD. My heart kinda broke a bit.
Anyways my point is I guess you're right slmkhoo.. its not a cure, its coping. -

But most of the children change only after years of intensive parental support. Sadly, she says, it is not possible to predict which children will improve.
And she cautions that recovery is ‘not a realistic expectation for the majority of kids, but parents should know it can happen’.
Certainly, Josh is very different nowadays. ‘He couldn’t talk. Now he doesn’t stop talking,’ says Renitha. ‘He learnt numbers very quickly and loves maths.’
But Renitha is adamant that Josh will always be autistic. He is in a mainstream school but he needs support to comprehend his lessons, she says: ‘Children don’t grow out of being autistic, but some can learn to live with it.
‘The danger is that if parents think their children will grow out of it, they might not put in the effort required to make a difference.’

Inspiring, but also sobering. I agree with this mother - I have seen improvements in my daughter over the years, but it has been with a lot of effort from us parents and herself, and she will still always have the basic traits that she started off with. What we have managed to help her with is coping strategies and learned skills, but coping with new situations and learning new skills always needs help from someone else who can analyse the situation and break the solution into bite-sized steps. It's not a cure, it's coping.
Anyways my point is I guess you're right slmkhoo.. its not a cure, its coping. -

RE: Not comfortable with maid praying in head-to-toe gear
hquek:
Not sure why she has to pray behind locked doors. In any case, prayers usually don't take more than 5-10mins. Suggest you speak to a Muslim friend/colleague about thisCurious follow on question. I had a friend whose ex-maid insisted on praying 5 times a day (behind locked doors). Is there any set timings that she must be praying? or don't care - so long as the work she needs to do is done?
I'm curious if there are any maids who insist on following this to the letter and how employers react.

Thanks ImMeeMee.. thinking about it, you're right, they do give in to him quite a bit, if only to stop the screaming. No wonder he's so well-behaved at home.

There's this thing known as positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. The former rewards the child if he/she shows positive behavior, while the latter is the opposite. Maybe one way is to check that the grandparents do not exhibit negative reinforcement, ie. giving in to him and letting him have his ways when he throws tantrums. At the same time, you could show positive reinforcement with rewards if he shows good behavior. You could start off small with a reward for a short period of good behavior, then slowly extends the interval.
I find that positive reinforcement works with my ASD doter, maybe also because she is always motivated to get some form of 'praise' from us ...
My two cents worth and hope this helps.
On the bright side, yest I asked him whether he was well-behaved at his grandparents' place, and he told me he \"only threw a tantrum once\". My helper collaborated it.. so I guess I should follow up with positive reinforcement later today! Wish I read your post yesterday haha. Thanks!
