    • RE: Q&A - PSLE Math

      leo_mums:
The ratio of the number twenty-cent coins to the number of fifty-cent coins in a box was 5:3.

60 twenty-cent coins were taken out and exchanged for fifty-cent coins of equal value.
The money was then put back into the box.
The ratio of the number of twenty-cent coins to the number of fifty-cent coins became 1:3.
How much money was there in the box?
You can consider this approach as well.

      Hi,

Can someone help to answer this question with a model?

Jane bought 4 similar tins of paint and 3 similar brushes for $54. Mary paid $106 for 8 similar tins of paint and 5 similar brushes. Find the cost of a tin of such paint.

      Thanks.

Why you assume he used up the excess 29 50c coins and not other combinations. This question has too many assumptions, can the person who posted it here confirm there is no typo error in the question first? Is it 37 coins or 37 50c coins?

I think both my assumption of only 50c and numeric's mixed coins meets the criteria set by the question. May have multiple correct answers. A properly set question would have put in the coins' usage ratio to ensure only one answer.

BTW, the numeri assumption of 1st using up the 29 coins for 50c is logical. The 29 coins of 50c is worth $14.50 and you want to quickly close the gap to $3.20 from there. If you use 29 from 10c, the gap will only be wider.[/quote]Before we close this question and move to other questions, there are actually 4 possible answers using guess-and-check....

That derived x>30 criteria (in order to get a positive, whole number for y) in the equation would have told us that we need to use up all 29 50c coins.

Some helpers packed a box of oranges and pears for charity. They packed 2 pears and 4 oranges in each bag and found that they had packed all the pears but left behind 12 oranges. How many oranges were there in the box at first if the number of oranges was 3 times as many as the number of pears at first?

Most students could solve this question but how would you solve it? šŸ˜„

Mrs Chai prepared 7/8 litre of lemonade in a jug. Her children drank 3/5 of the lemonade. How much lemonade was left in the jug? Give your answer in fraction in the simplest form.
      2/5 * 7/8 litre = 14/40 litre = 7/20 litre
