There are both good and bad points to having a ridiculously hard paper.
If it’s too easy, It becomes too difficult to separate those who are really geniuses, from the average.
But if it is too hard, average students are stumped on virtually every question, and are left with a terrible score.
Haha, I still remember the Jim an Ken question. Tried it in P5, took me 15 minutes to solve. It really is all up to whether or not, you study well enough. If you drill your child hard enough, He or she will definitely be able to conquer Jim and Ken with ease.
Rewards come with hard work. Put in enough effort, and you don’t need to worry about anything else.

Iggy's
Iggy’s is far too overrated.
The best restaurant in Asia? I would eat Maxwell chicken rice anyday. -
RE: CHIJ Toa Payoh Secondary
Its been 3 weeks since I’ve joined this school.
I do not mean to offend you, quintessential mom, But I find your opinions very biased.
In these 3 weeks, I have spotted nothing of what you said. I’m not joking. Maybe one or two a-wee-bit too low belts, but nothing else.
Our level is quite diligent, and our teachers are drastically far from what you have said.
Sure, there may be the "trends", with the current being this ridiculously large clutch purse that everyone seems to be carrying a variation of.
But Its been great! They’re quite strict. The IJ spirit is everywhere too, promoting unity.
I would just like to ask, where have you heard all of this from?
Perhaps you could say, that because I am in one of average or above classes, I do not get exposed to the bane of society you say these girls commit. But I strongly believe, that our girls are not bad.
Like one user said, Every school has its own black sheep. There is no way to stop it. We can only look at the bright side, and hope in the future. -
RE: Secondary School Third Languages
Hello all,
I scored 255 for my PSLE, and i have put French as my first choice for a third language.
Unfortunately, my offer has been rejected, and now i am only applicable to take Arabic ( second choice).
Is there any way that I can appeal to learn French? I don’t really have that all much interest in Arabic. -
RE: Teaching Chinese at Home
hello all.
I personally think the best way to teach your child Chinese at home is to surround him or her with Chinese influences.
I come from a English-speaking family, and disliked Chinese when I was younger, due to the americanized environment i grew up in.
Everything around me was Caucasian, from the brands I used, to the television I watched.
I was influenced by the american entertainment virtues of money, materialism, and looks.
I was very foolish back then, and when I look back on it I feel ashamed of myself.
Sadly, many children, even those around my age, do not realize the beauty, the grace, and the quirks of the Chinese language.
They are under the delusion of white supremacy, that anything that is foreign and out of Asia is good, and that the Chinese language is all rough and uncouth.
That is why children today have lost sight of the traditional Chinese values.
In order to reinstate, or instill for that matter, a sense of interest in the Chinese language, the child needs to be interested in the culture.
I was weak in Chinese in my P1 to P2 years. At P3, I saw that my grades were slipping from A to B, and I decided had to do something.
No, I didn’t go crazy and sign myself up for Chinese tuition seven days of the week.
I’ll admit, i’m the laziest person you’ll find, in fact, I spent my precious PSLE studying time reading manga and watching the telly!
So i thought of the best way for myself. Watching TV.
My Chinese has been exceptionally good ever since. I further expanded my exposure to Chinese culture by reading Chinese novels (the reallyyyy old type), and conversing with my grandparents in Chinese.
This wasn’t enough to satiate my appetite and hunger, so i requested my parents bring me to China for our annual year-end holiday.
In the twelve years of my life, I have gone to China 7 times, and I am proud to say that my Chinese is very proficient.
Or maybe its just because I have a weird Chinese accent when I speak Chinese that makes people think I come from Beijing.
cheers,
numericrhapsodies. -
RE: Recommended English Books
pixiedust:
The first few books are basically just \"light\", \"light\" romance, and well, \"light\". Its like a warm-up for the kids, when they're younger they read \"lighter things, then when they're older- the darkness starts.@Jennifer, glad to see your feedback. Useful to me as a parent too.
@Advisepls, the first 2-3 books of the Harry Potter series are lighter theme. My boy also started reading them at P2. He enjoyed and kept re-reading them. From 'Goblet of Fire', the theme gets darker, with deaths and Lord Voldemot coming back to life. Maybe you can introduce the first few books and see how your child takes to them.
It gets darker and darker, with dumbledore's death in the 6th book basically blaring a horn saying that its going to be hell from here on. Fred dies, dobby dies, professor charity dies, mad eye dies, hedwig dies, scrimgeour dies, gregorovitch dies, grindelwald dies, and a few 20 more people do too, and molly spouts a b-bomb on bellatrix near the end of the book.
And Ron finds out he likes Hermione, Harry nearly gets strangled by a satanic necklace, voldermort opens dumbledore's tomb, insults him, walks on top of him, and THEN steals his wand.
Bathilda Bagshot turns out to be a crazy snake, Fleur's wedding goes ballistic with people killing everyone and a hell lot of gore.
And thats just all I can remember in a matter of minutes.
Don't let your kids read deathly hallows at P1. seriously. I only read it when it came out in P3. -
