Hi. My girl got her booklist for P5 today. I see there's a calculator listed. For those in the know: is this something they're actually going to make regular use of in the syllabus, or is it going to be one of those that will turn out to be 'nice to have but not officially needed' kind of things?

Calculator will be used in Math Paper 2. It is required.

      I see. All the best!

It will be done at end of P5. Your child will find out when he or she receives the report book. Some had to drop Higher Chinese.
Yes, DD is continuing with Higher Chinese. :xedfingers:

http://media.photobucket.com/user/axiemeluv/media/Smiley/thankyou.gif.html! He needs all the wishes. Hope he will be able to cope with it.

Don't worry. He will make it. Just give him lots of TLC.

Your DD must have done very well to be able to continue with HCL. http://media.photobucket.com/user/SonelSA/media/Animations/congratulations.gif.html to you!

Oh yes! Another question. Will your DD still be in the same class? Does the school \"shuffle\" the students again for P6 class allocation?

Thanks! She was just lucky. Needs to work harder.

Yes, like what Teh Tarik mentioned, they “shuffled\" the students again for P6 class allocation. DD is still in the same class, some of her close friends move to the next class while some other close friends move back. :grphug:

So if the students get 297 then lowest is 1 & highest is 3 where use it to apply the SAP Sec School. Looking at the HMT text in which I see would be the extra vocab the kids have to handle.

In your example, yes, but please note that the maximum of three points will be added to the aggregate T-score, not raw score. Higher Chinese points will only be added if your child applies to a SAP school during S1 selection.

The minimum is 0, if the child fails the Higher Chinese Paper. Hopefully not.

Did a comparison of the Normal Chinese and Higher Chinese textbooks. They are about 80%-90% similar. One or two chapters available in the Normal Chinese textbook are not in the Higher Chinese textbook (because these chapters are meant to lay the foundation for the students). For every chapter, the Higher Chinese textbook has a few more vocab than the Normal Chinese book.

Does this apply to P3 who are taking HMT? Or P5 only?
Sorry, I mean only need to purchase HMT textbook and no Normal Chinese textbook? 😓

As far as I can remember, only one Chinese textbook (either Normal Chinese or Higher Chinese) is needed.
For P3 next year, I think the teacher informed that those going into 3M and 3N will be taking Higher Chinese. Please correct me if I am wrong. Best to wait for the booklist.

      hi all,

I am new to this thread. Hope to learn from all of you.
I am also thinking about whether to get the past yr papers as the school may also load the kids with tons of work. Can't imagine what life's going to be like next year :nailbite:

Any recommended place to stay in Ubud. Intend to stay 3 nites .. is it too much? Do we need to hire a driver in Ubud.. are all within walking distance. Which paddy field is nice?

      Thanks.

anyone has any place to stay in ubud? and how to 'visit' the paddy fields?
      tia,
      wendy

I have stayed at Komaneka Tanggayuda Resorts in Ubud before. Loved it! I think they have three other resorts in Ubud. The resort provides hourly shuttle service to Ubud town. We didn't really visit the paddy fields but we passed by them on our way to and back from the town.

Depending on where you intend to go, you may need to hire a driver in Ubud.

You may want to try river rafting at ubud. fun!

So has your son decided to go for Higher Chinese?

Yes, my son is keen to take up Higher Chinese. So, we will let him try out for one year and see how it goes.

BTW, I understand that the school will carry out another round of proposal with regards to this Higher Chinese. Is it done at the end of P5 or beginning of P6? Does your DD plan to continue with Higher Chinese?

      I see. All the best!

Students taking HCL will attend lesson conducted by the HCL teacher. She will cover both normal Chinese and HCL using the Higher Chinese textbook, and the students only need to buy Higher Chinese Textbooks.

Usually vocab (生词) in normal Chinese textbooks are also covered in higher Chinese textbooks although I have never done comparison. The passages may not be the same as well.

HCL pupils need to stay back once a week for an additional lesson to be taught by the same hcl teacher.

Oh! You mean for students taking HCL, they don't attend any lessons on Normal Chinese at all? So, that means they don't have to buy Normal Chinese textbooks?

      Teh Tarik/Oasis06,

I also have a concern for selecting HMT. If a kid did badly in HMT (B) & MT (A), how will the result affect in the PSLE overall computation?

Radin Mas is not a school offering HMT. Those students being offer have to travel to other primary school (Eg Nanyang, Nan Hua) to take? How is the duration in a week?

      Thanks a zillion!

      Titank,

According to my son, his MT teacher told them that should they decide to take up HMT, there is a \"60% chance the students will be taught by Liao Lao Shi\". Liao Lao Shi taught your son last year. So, I presume those taking HMT will have their lessons within the school compound. However, students need to stay back once a week for this extra HMT lesson.

Other parents, please correct me if I am wrong.

Only MT is included in the PSLE T-score (under the current system). For HMT, students will get a maximum of three points (three points for those who score Distinction). These three points will be added to the T-score for the other four subjects IF AND ONLY IF the student chooses a SAP school during the S1 selection exercise. So, let's say, your son scores Distinction in his HMT. He gets three points. Further assume that his T-score for the four standard subjects is 260. If he decides to choose RI (which is a non-SAP school), he can't add the three points to his T-score - he will have to apply based on his 260. On the other hand, if he decides to choose HCI, he will be able to apply with his score of 263 (260 for four standard subjects + 3 for HMT).

      Qms is right.

This year, pupils taking HCL in 5M and 5A2 will go to one classroom during mother tongue lesson to attend HCL while the other pupils taking normal Chinese in these two classes will attend normal Chinese in another classroom. HCL pupils need to stay back once a week for an additional lesson to be taught by the same hcl teacher.

At the end of P5, the school will decide again, based on your child's results in HCL and normal Chinese (min for hcl - 60%, min for normal Chinese - 70%), whether he or she can continue with HCL.

      Hope this helps.
