RE: Opinions on changes to PSLE
The difference in banding between the upper levels to PSLE level is like this.
In the higher levels, students can choose multiple streams (eg. Science / Humanities), Poly/Uni (multiple different courses).
For Sec 1, most of the same top students will be fighting for the same places in the top schools.
How do we then differentiate the students with similar grades (T-score removed) or by character / leadership qualities?
Will we go the path that these needs to be quantified too?
I like the removal of the T-score but the replacement method has also to be measurable. -
RE: Opinions on changes to PSLE
With the new grading system, it will be possible to compare say two children with similar grades.
But one with ECA / character / leadership but another without it.
However, I feel now primary schools will be churning out more and more character / leadership
awards and bloat up the resume of the children from their respective schools.
How do you compare then two children with similar grades and both with character / leadership awards?
If one comes from a popular primary school? Do you choose him over one who comes from a less popular
school. My feel is that that is what will happen.
Note: Unless school is going to allocate more resoures to interview more students during the DSA. -

No lah, posh location where got problem with school proximity?
Public housing in a low density area might also have problems with school distance.
Wah! Sounds like a posh neighbourhood!pirate:
When I moved to my current location, the one thing I completely neglected to look at.....was schools.
I have no school within 2.5 km of my house. Apart from the two I volunteered at, the next closest was 4km away, with a difficult bus ride.

RE: Opinions on changes to PSLE
I wonder whether with this banding method @ PSLE level …
Will we be able to have a similar posting system like ‘O’ levels to Poly/JC or ‘A’ levels to university? The thing I look forward to mostly is transparency (…especially now with the introduction of character awards (very subjective who to give) as one criteria to go into good secondary schools) -
RE: PM Lee's National Day Rally on Sunday to be broadcast
The introduction of banding for PSLE grades will
Reduce stress in parents and students 10% 10% [ 8 ]
Have NO effect on stress in parents and students 45% 45% [ 36 ] x
Increase stress amongst parents and students 45% 45% [ 36 ]
So at least 90% currently thinks the banding will match the current stress level or higher. The banding is a good step forward but will solve only very little of the stress issue. Stress will never go away because many always strives to enter the top schools. -

Does not mean any diff if originally that particular school gets about 40+ (e.g Kong Hwa) every year for 2C. These are meant for super popular school. Really serves no purpose to the general.
Sounded so good on the TV last nite. Now, it seems to me that
We thought 40 for Phase 2C... actually only 20! my goodness.toddles:

Press Releases
August 19, 2013
40 Places Reserved to Ensure Open Access to All Primary Schools
1. Starting from the 2014 Primary One (P1) Registration Exercise, the Ministry of Education (MOE) will reserve 40 places in every primary school for registrants in Phase 2B and 2C to ensure continued open access in all primary schools.
2. The 40 places will be reserved before the start of the P1 Registration Exercise..
it is almost the same thing as what we already have. Just some
repackaging (see my previous post for stats).
2A1 and 2A2 look untouchable to any policy change. -
RE: PM Lee's National Day Rally on Sunday to be broadcast
1 2A1\t2A2\tBalance
Henry Park Primary School\t300\t163\t61\t63\t13
Ai Tong School\t 330\t170\t76\t69\t15
Red Swastika School\t 240\t121\t36\t59\t24
CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School\t210\t65\t87\t33\t25
Nan Hua Primary School\t 240\t133\t27\t50\t30
Having 40 places is a very good idea but …
Only a total of five schools will have their Phase 2A2 places affected based
on this year’s registration. (i.e. Balance after Phase 2A2 is less than 40 places)
The rest of the schools are "safe" for now. If there are no changes to the phases,
then most of the 40 places will come from the original Phase 2B. If this is the
case, it means that stuff like volunteer work do not really work so well … more
work for staff now?
"This cannot be a society which is based on 'guan xi" (Agreed totally) … then
can someone please explain how this statement applies to the current 40 places change if Phase 2A1 and 2A2 are still being implemented?
For me, volunteer work (Phase 2B) hardly counts as "guan xi".
