I hope you and your children are getting a good breather now that we are transitioning into term 4 of the academic year. If you might be looking for some feedback or general advice as to how your child should proceed with his/her musical development, I will be happy to conduct a trial session. I teach advanced students and am very patient with younger students as well.

I recently set up a piano studio in July this year, and still am in the process of student recruitment. In one of my recent posts here, I wrote about the importance of evaluating a teacher's credentials (music university graduates vs. diploma teachers vs. Grade 8 teachers vs. NUS students doubling up as music teachers to earn extra income). I am also highly skeptical of crash courses, quick-fix solutions, and the promises of guaranteed paths to distinction, which in my opinion are not compatible with the proper study of music that takes time, effort, and devotion. Maximising a 40-hour per week teaching schedule is also not a priority of mine: as a teacher-musician, it is important to be closely in touch with one's own practice and craft in order to be capable of truly giving to one's students.

My name is Pamela Krakauer and I recently set up a piano studio near Braddell MRT in Singapore. Having received my Master’s in Piano Pedagogy from the University Mozarteum in Salzburg Austria, a place with an exceptionally long and illustrious classical music tradition, I am very eager to share my knowledge and support piano students here in Singapore. I am a patient, experienced and competent teacher who is flexible and very passionate about teaching and music. I am able to adapt my teaching methods to different levels and personalities, from beginners to very advanced students-- in the Singapore context this translates into ABRSM Grade 1 to Diploma level such as LRSM or LTCL.

I have observed that in Singapore, there is a tendency to use “degree” and “diploma” interchangeably and there is some confusion surrounding what the difference is. Given how this is an unregulated industry, many diploma-level teachers have no qualms about promoting themselves as piano teachers and many Grade 8 holders feel that they are competent enough to teach lower grade students. I would like to point out that there is absolutely no way a diploma-trained teacher can ever attain the knowledge and depth of a full-time University degree trained music teacher, who had to undergo a comprehensive curriculum that includes music history, conducting, theory, analysis, pedagogical training, music and psychology classes etc, while having to learn a large scope of repertoire and perform music for various examination juries and concert settings.

If you would like professional feedback or advice regarding which direction your child should take, an assessment on his/her readiness for ABRSM exams, or an evaluation of his/her existing musical foundation, please don’t hesitate to contact me for a trial lesson. I am receptive to accepting transfer students who are looking for guidance and detailed feedback, and am able to help students diagnose problems and overcome difficulties at the piano while ensuring that they make concrete progress and enjoy music.

My studio is professionally set up, with a vast amount of resources and I have two wonderful pianos, personally cherished instruments that I wish to share with my students.
