Hahaha....currently i am reading psle survival guide.wow that so much related to our family.my son also read and laugh.

I read the book too, when DS1 was taking his PSLE last year.. A nice book to read with DS.. Informative with a light touch of humour.. Their situation was very similar to our family too (except that we have 2 DSs but the family has a DS and a younger DD).. Even the lizard in their house looked similar to ours, haha!

I am glad you like the book. Also glad you like the lizard. The story about the lizard was almost removed by the publisher, but I insisted and he relented. The neglected DD in the book was asking why she was mentioned only a little. Perhaps, another book for DDs?

i was reading the few pages of this thread and came across this book: \"PSLE survival Guide for the family\"

Although DS is only in P4 this yr,( Opps! i am being KS again) but i felt it is always good to start learning early.
i am half-way into finishing this book and i must say it really helps me a lot in the right and less tedious method of coahing my kids in their studies. some part of this book is rather funny and i have a good laugh reading it.
i had also highlighted some important quotes for me to take note.
will get my DS to read after i am done.

There is a book PSLE Survival Guide for the Family. It talks about a family’s journey through the PSLE year. You can find it in your local library. It uses simple english. PSLE students and parents are known to like it.

Is the child working hard or refusing to study and wanting to play?


Got the papers returned? Walk through them and see where are the weak areas and attack them. Really need to walk through each question, and ask the child how he came up with the answer. Then perhaps can do something about it. Still it is about a month left. But a month can do wonders if everyone focus.

Best way is to conduct some diagnosis and find out where the weak areas are. For example, with Science, it it about remembering facts? or classifying facts, or relating facts? or understanding experimental variables? or explaining scientific phenomenon. Similarly, for maths. I have a chapter in my book "PSLE Survival Guide for the Family" that talks about doing such diagnosis, which we did at the end of P5 for my ds. This might mean going through all the test papers from school, and so on. Very often, the child can quickly point out where the weakness occurs.


There are different kinds of assessments. Some easy, some difficult. So, you need to be selective about what you buy. Something slightly more challenging is always better.

Also check if the child is able to handle exam phobia. Maybe the child knows everything, but once exam comes, the mind is blank. So, when trying out assessment, set a time limit for completing the paper and similar conditions.
