    • RE: All About Getting Help for Students Weak in Math

      Hey!

I have more of such concept for the upper primary. For lower primary, I think they lose more marks in problem sums that have such more than, less than, fewer than questions and at the end, they ask the total. The kids tend to have more mistakes on that which I don’t know why. I made my child to highlight every word that says more than less than and it works. So you guys may want to try it.

Also, if they tend to be confuse (for P2 level) on converting dollar to cents and vice versa, just tell them to ignore the decimal to become cents and from cents to become dollar, just count 2 space. I tried explaining the logic behind but my child is always confuse so I gave up and teach him this way.
Only intend to tell him the logic when he grows slightly older.

      HI Kelpw!

Math is easy to score if you help boost your daughter’s confidence. I once taught a student who scored U-grade throughout from P3-P5 but she managed to scored a pass for PSLE. Anyway, an easy way I feel that can boost your child’s morale is to tell her the different tricks on how to solve questions. For example, if your child is weak in understanding more than or less than (since she’s in P2), tell her that the first number always belong to the more than or less than.

Eg. 321 is 10 more than _____? So, 'more than" belongs to 321, therefore, answer is definitely smaller.

Should you need more in such concept, you may always feel free to pm me. More than willing to help you. Advise is to find a young yet experienced tutor to create that interest in your girl for mathematics.

    • RE: How to help my child

      Hi.

In order to buck up for her math, she can do the following method which I have tried on a student of mine who failed her math in Primary 5 but managed to score 60 plus for her prelims. For mathematics, get her to do past year exam papers. You may want to head down to Bras Besah for a better offer of past year exam papers. You may want to purchase 2010 and 2011 papers.

To boost her morale, get her do the MCQ only for maybe about 2 months. Preferably every day a set of MCQ plus the first 5 (2 marks) questions of section C and by the end of 2 months, she should be able to score about 17-20 marks for MCQ and full marks for the first 5 questions. Then, do the same for section B and proceed to do all the 3 marks questions for Section C. Thus, she should have sufficient time from about Apr to Oct (6 months) to tackle on all the 4 and 5 marks questions.

Also, a word of advice, is to engage a private tutor to teach her on speed and circles which are new to them. You may want to check with the tutor if she/he is able to identify the different kind of speed question. This is fairly important as I realised from all these years of tutoring that students are most afraid of speed questions. Thus, the idea is to boost her morale to increase her interest.

All the best to you and your child in preparing fro her upcoming PSLE!

PS. I’m so sorry I can’t provide much advise on Science as my expertise is not in that area.
