School = Army? I dun quite get u... As a man who had done 2.5 years of NS coupled with completing my reservist, I can tell u that for those who have been inside their own bubble for too long, their thinking is often warped, so they lack the flexibility to adjust their thinking.I may be OT here - is there a prejudice opinion against SAF personnel moving into govt office posts or heading SMRT?
The dissent opinions are based on one's personal knowledge of the other person's lack in character, calibre or simply based on \"I hate his face\"?
I have my boys coming back from school and poured grievances on me. When I asked whether they spoke to the person in charge, I was told no point doing so, the person wont listen. I do not understand my boys' rationale.
This is my personal feel that I think resonates with some of my peers, be they 30 or 70%:
Many of these appointments are parachuted in without prior knowledge about the field they r taking over. E.g. when did Mindef started operating a train system? Which part of military experience can one translate into running NEA (Digging trenches maybe)? Just because they are ex scholars, they can just earn these CEO appointments without sufficient field knowledge and get a huge non peanuts / non mediocre package? Dun they have to earn it?
The resentment will not have been so strong had the most glaring example of SMRT been functioning well. Some may argue that we r still better than other countries, but that is a slippery slope argument and runs agst the ethos our founding father built this land on. -
RE: Malaysia Forest City
It’s also a bad thing when the main housekeeper is not meritocratic and chooses the wrong person as successor, choosing to side with a chinese bloke that is an ex war chief but incapable of intellectual aspects of refinement vs the experienced Indian old hand well liked by more than him for fear of bring outshone. Not fair to the contracting party who are not paying peanuts for mediocre work and reasonably should be given the best man for the job.

The issue is deeer than reserves. At the point in time, we do need a figure head to signal & uphold the racial harmony our forefathers hv so painstakingly built up. I shld think tough we complain a whole lot, we're not suffering fr WW nor famine or in communist regime. We may not hv land for everyone to build terraces or bungalows, but our economy ticks. I don't mind national reserves save for rainy days. Not like we are all scrapping fr bottom of rice bins right?
Using your analogy, we should thank the PAP for being so ever understanding to spare us from making the choice and getting our fingers dirty in the presidential elections by selecting Ms Halimah then? Serving the shit on our plate to tuck in?They are so kind and understanding, we should all repent for blaming them of doing the Tan Cheng Block then since TCB will most probably ask to check the reserves and cause great administrative issues?Peiliang:

This hit me whilst thinking abt M'sia bumiputra privileges & all the corruption arising fr undeserved privileges. Our ppl & our govt worked hard.
When we had the Asian downturn & ppl lost their jobs, I know of many (personal frds) who made sacrifices to enable families w/o jobs to earn a living. I don't see our ppl putting up mats in public walkways or living in manholes like this in HK or communist states tt didn't take care of them.
We're just kiasu Sporeans worrying abt our children affording housing. I've not seen medical support that provides for Pioneer generations & govt regularly alerting the nation of national health issues & avenues to keep fit & stay healthy. I've only heard of Bill Gates pouring origin of his wealth for education but not a govt providing for SkillsFuture & re-training & actively match jobs after suitable retraining, opening up more healthcare related jobs where the ppl need them most as they age. I've only heard of some private aging homes where the elderly hv to pay heftily & get fleeced. We lived up to our Kiasu reputation yah?
All I will just like to ask is if u think the ends justify the means? Cos my point had been that the reserved election had been a Tan Chen Block maneuver, and not a true religious figure head selection. It was never about religion in the first place. This is the elephant in the room. U have your views on this, and so does everyone else. I'm neither convinced nor confused. U also seem to be grasping at the past whereas we are looking at how these 4G ministers will guide us being spearheaded by CCS in a new world. The ministers and leadership of the past is history, we r worried about the future. Past performance does not indicate future performance, else we will all still be using Nokia, BlackBerry or Motorola mobile phones. Cheers.

having that old nut bring up the issue of high salary, increase in GST, water and electricity, cost of living, it's really worrying what the future has in store for us and our kids.
I have a feeling that if unchecked, they will go nuclear as it had been brought up before and u see the ST trumpeting the benefits. My opinion is that our future generations will all perish in an armageddon when an accident happens. That's the future :siam: -

Sorry... I got triggered. Stay Aljunied chup lau but vote under MacPherson SMC & Marine Parade GRC for past 2 elections. My MP could have been Nicole Seah but ended up with TPL. So a lot of grievances to let out due to the gerrymandering. Haha. :rotflmao:

Rmbr Brigader Gen GY? No fault but political tragedy. Hope he shares wealth of experience to adv Mynmar govt.
Who created the GRC system - original intended to ensure minority representation, but has since expanded to ensure a free pass for a number of chosen ones?
Some wise old cheena fellow once said, 水能载舟, 亦能覆舟.
As much as WP sent their A team to contest Aljunied, there were some push factors against GY and his team. In fact, the margin of defeat will have been wider had they not gerrymandered and substituted Pro PAP Kaki Bukit with the Hougang area within the GRC for the election then. Off my head, I list some of the areas where he and his team lost its constituents:
1. Building a workers hostel in Serangoon Gardens landed estate area. This was one of voters' self centeredness and poor planning and execution by PAP. I dare say that most of the people in this landed estate need not care about GST vouchers or whatever goodies that they were dishing out and when they told George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hua \"Not in this backyard!\" whom did not listen and so they voted in protest.
2. The other minister, Lim Hwee Hua sueing Low IQ Boy. Google this. Another MP Cynthia Phua also got dragged in. The internet does not forget and this act woke the people up in some ways that their MPs was not caring and in touch. Also explains why MPs that get attacked during MPS are reacting differently these days.
3. George Yeo being the face of CECA and IRs at that time also did not help for those that did not agree with these.
4. Other 2 MPs were a parachuted in \"Ong Ye Kung\" who had done little to endear himself to the constituents till then and waiting to be parachuted in. Other was a Malay guy making up the numbers. I really don't know his name or what he did prior. -

Hi, my point being that he is repeating the army culture of running away instead of not being out for being accountable a.k.a NATO. He is not paid peanuts nor mediocre by GCT's definition in any way (I am.I wld much prefer Spore send good engineers to learn fr the Japanese or Germans then to hv them running around this place.
I don't think the problem is surface as we reason it to be. I believe it went back to years back when some bloke made that decision to hold back maintenance & replacement costs & go for profit generating for all the marketing & poster revenue.
It takes a strong decisive will to make that decision to start spending for infrastructure when the time calls for it & im thankful KBW made decisive call.
Aiya, make speech next day train breakdown u blame him? Wa, Lik that I dare not talk to you leh. Cannot give others time & space to start their job, no wonder Sporeans get so stressed up. No chance one. Must do it right the first time. Perfection! Swee swee, cannot hv 瑕疵 one. Rejection! Rejection!) and I don't think it is too much to ask. Those of us who have been thru NS will know my point. Lui Tuck Yew in his ill fated stint as transport minister at least had more accountability than him I feel. Anyway, y am I being objectified if we are having a reasoned discussion? U dun happen to be related right? LOL.
It is my view that this public transport privatisation into GLCs has been a social failure. Privatising profits but socialising the losses. See, the privatisation has brought about corporate greed and huge salaries for the connected at the expense of commuters as u pointed out. The govt will be funding $1.1bn over 10 years to buy more buses for the bus companies because they will not be expanding their fleet as they were suffering losses and given that the govt should be in no hurry to open up our reserves, us taxpayers should be picking up the tab... Was the fallout by short termism resultant from corporate greed causing the losses? Downtimes and fines and repair costs are not cheap and impacts the bottom line. Top brass renumeration do not come cheap. The ex CEO then was paid $2m plus annually for this KPI driven experiment that went so wrong. Of course, u may have your own interpretation of y taxpayers need to foot this bill, but I state again that this is my point of view after some reasoned thought. Let's keep things civil.
Also, no matter who u r politically aligned with, pls stop to consider whether our future will be brighter under Tharman or ex General CCS... If the best man for SG does not get the job due to a reason such as race when we can have a reserved election for a Malay who had an Indian father, I say ours and our children's futures look bleak.
Anyhow, it's Flu/ HFMD season and I have a sick kid as well as a choked sink at home. Need to get bz. Ciao.

I'm of the opinion that we are living in an autocracy and they r not listening. I lost my faith totally after President select Halimah Indian/ malay fiasco. Basically, they forced shit on us and are making us swallow more unabated. More recently, tell me how a global search for talent to lead SMRT can revert to hiring another paper general is not shoving shit down our throats again? Is the world really that deprived of talent or do they think we are really that dumb? They just appointed another ex general to be CEO of NEA too. R we becoming more Thailand or Myanmar?floppy:

A politician's job is very tough.
He / she has to make a decision and choose between:
a) a shitty option, or
b) another shitty option.
No matter how he decides, he will be blamed for choosing a shitty option.
However, this is not to say that we should give them a free pass all the time. We are not living in an autocracy. We are free to express our desire for another shitty option over the shitty option that they had decided. It's their job to listen and decide, and then make another decision to pick on another shitty option
Peiliang,
Er... not sure what you're asking for & get it after that you'll not complain govt go world search & found a top notch talent fr Japan or Germany to run our transport system. Will you be happy? If yes, then wld you gripe their pay package coz it shld be coming with family, dogs in toll & no HDB housing too. Foreign talent mah. They shld do a better job with excellent track record what, so pay cannot be peanuts right.
Even if u don't gripe, ano Sporean will coz it took away a top job fr our pure bred Sporean. I would complain coz a foreign will pose me questions of their loyalty & our Sporean security is at stake. Imagine all the highly confidential info of access to depots, etc besides the publicized train tracks.
What I wld prefer, wld be our own top talents whether had run engineering outfits fr Aviation or other large engineering outfits, to put themselves up for the challenge. Maybe govt shld put up JD on public domain & we hear of some success stories fr relatives, friends or neighbor they've been shortlisted or hired!
To be frank, end of the day, all we want first and foremost is a reliable train system that works. Not some tokenism wayang and going back to hire military men instead of people that had experience running a reliable system. From Asia alone, we have got HK and Japan that are doing much better for us. I don't think they hired as many military men as we did. Japan for one had apologised over a tweet for a train leaving 20 seconds ahead of schedule... We had the new SMRT CEO come out to promise better reliability only to have the train break down the next day, vanishing without a trace.
Fundamentally, I think we as a nation are mature enough to distinguish between right and wrong and look beyond this local vs foreign talent debate. If they were to hire someone from overseas that can make our system as reliable as yesteryear, he or she deserves an honorary citizenship. Likewise, when some in power said Tharman cannot be the next PM because of race, while anointing *u know who* (Please raise up your hand if u dun.), I disagree. In fact, I say this as a Chinese Singaporean that I know who I will vote for if the PM role can be democratically elected and it's a straight fight between LHL and Tharman.
