As long as there is some form of categorization of children based on academic standing, and with different categories different amount of teaching resources are available, it is very difficult to change parents' mindsets.

      :goodpost:

Like my dd's school, clear differentiation between resources allocated for Express and NA classes.

E.g. Less resources for NA girls taking O-levels Combined Chemistry Paper 5 this year - they had NO lab classes for 4 years & only 8 lessons planned for this year (teacher already cancelled first lesson last week). Compare this with the Express girls, practical classes every alternate weeks leading up to the O-levels.

Some of the Sec 5 NA girls had not even seen a bunsen burner before, let alone touched one.

Imagine, both sets of girls are taking the same paper!

That's why I'm very worried for my girl taking Chem Paper 5 and looking for external chem practical lessons as she has never stepped into a lab before.

Actually, the quality of teachers and teaching resources have little impact on the independent, motivated and high ability learners but the quality of teachers and teaching resources have great impact on weaker learners.

But in schools, we are seeing that better teachers are assigned to teach the top classes. Understandably, more teaching resources will be used for high ability learners since they can take in more.[/quote]actually, better teachers are assigned to better classes because moe provides funding to schools based on how well a school does in various areas. The area which is easiest to tackle is academic results. My friend's school didn't even have funding to install telephones in the staff room, all staff (including the Principal) share 2 telephones. It's all very well to say that we as teachers should stop agonizing over academic results, but for many schools, it is the only way to secure resources for the children. haish, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

    • RE: Lazy Teachers, Lying Teachers -How to deal with them?

      whiteyess:
What about students who lie to teachers? Any teachers had feedback on that?

I suppose you are referring to the big lies, not the minor ones like \"I left my homework at home.\" There are students who will claim that they have submitted their work when they clearly haven't, like this sec 1 child I had who was not only not submitting my work, but work from the other subjects as well. It came up during a level meeting because the form teacher received a complaint from the mother that the teachers were not returning the child's work. As some of the assignments were electronic based (submission through email), the teachers in question told the child to submit it again and even checked her laptop. Right till the end she insisted that she deleted her own copy right after submitting. Very intelligent child, it was a pity. Thankfully though, students like that are few in number.
