• RE: Compare RGS vs NYGH

      phtthp:
      mommyNg:

here's the analysis based on personal stories, experiences and school P's sharing:

Approximate number of students not able to move to their respective IP JCs (NYGH -> HCI, RGS -> RI) per cohort each year:

      NYGH- 23-25 (O level class) + 0-2 (exit/repeat) + 10-15 (Sec 4 IP fail to meet promotion criteria to HCI) = 33-42
      RGS- 0-2 (exit/repeat)

      Note1 on promotion criteria:
      NYGH - to remain IP for Sec 1 to 3 = 60-64 (msg4); for Sec 4 to JC = 65-69 (msg3); the best L1R5 O level score from 2016 O level class was 15 (before discount from HCL/CCA)
      RGS - for Sec 1-4 to JC = 50 (GPA 2.0)

      Note2 on subject selection:
NYGH - to do triple science in Sec 3, need min 65-70 in Sec 2 (msg3); to continue to take at least 2 sciences in Sec 4, need min 60-64 in Sec 3 (msg4) otherwise can only take 1 science (chemistry)
RGS - no requirement, free to chooose as long as pass (50)

Both schools can be highly stressful: NYGH -> worry about whether able to meet min msg every year, RGS -> worry about whether able to cope in JC? How do the IP girls perform at A levels?

One should consider the fit of the child with the school's programmes and culture when choosing Sec schools, rather than the perception of how \"safe\" the schools seems to be 😄
      !

wah ! Now we understand why there is such a big difference in the numbers, between RGS vs. NYGH ( IP).

I feel that the Promotional criteria for NYGH (at end of Year 1 to Year 4), is too strict, demanding.
60 to 65 marks required (Y1 to Y4), and 65 to 70 marks required at end of Y4, are challenging, tall order ! If u mention 60 marks required for Promotional clearance, 60 is still ok, acceptable, because we are talking about Secondary level, in IP program, with 8 or 9 subjects to manage.

For RGS girls who failed Y4 (IP) Promotional exam, do they get \"auto-pushed\" up, into RI JC (1) ?

What is year-end Promotional criteria like, for RI (JC1) students moving up into RI (JC2) ? Is it very tough ?

How is Hwa Chong year-end Promotional criteria like, for Hwa Chong (JC1) pupils, moving up into Hwa Chong (JC2) ? Even more demanding, than that of RI ?

mommyNg, you are right ! I take back my words earlier that, safer to choose NYGH because of the presence of on-demand O-level track, to fall back upon. With such demanding Promotional criteria, from Y1 to Y4 (IP) in NYGH : not safe. In fact, after you showed us the figures, scary. But we truly appreciated the figures & your effort, which u had shown us. Now, we understand why it is so stressful, studying inside the Big 5 (plus NUS High, included too)

Actually, studying in an IP school is stressful, no matter which IP school one join. But this NYGH, exceptionally stressful ...

Just for info, there is strictly no bargaining if the girl can't meet the promotion criteria in NYGH ...
For e.g. at the end of Y2, if the girl obtains MSG 4.01 .... she will go to SIP programme i.e. O level track ... But if she performs well in Y3, she can go back to IP track ...

The sec 2 girls have to take turns to stay at the boarding house or will the whole cohort stay in the boarding house at the same time?

Daily 3 meals will be provided or the girls will have to do own their cooking?

This reminds me of my days staying at the Uni hostels. 😂

During orientation day, I overheard a mum telling another mum that her elder girl was staying at the boarding house as she spent long hours in school. So everyone can just apply to stay at the boarding house as long as they like??
During dd time (2017), there was 3 batches. Next year there are 2 batches.

U can refer to the school calendar :-

      https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=nygh.edu.sg_66kpkcg8eg5jh05viae59vavnc@group.calendar.google.com

      Meals will be provided.

The girls can pay to stay at the boarding school if they wish to ...

      Hello lee_yl,

No lah... there are no silly questions. The girls can do their own laundry or bring back home to wash - no hard rules. But usually have to “fight” for the washing machines / dryers in the boarding school 😂 . During the BSE, it’s not unusual to see the girls coming to class in “un-ironed” uniform or wear the same uniform for 2 days 😉 .

The global classroom program lasts 2 weeks, and the girls can opt between a few China cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou. If they are in the SAP program, it can go up to 6 weeks.

Lots of activities to train the girls up.

How long is the boarding school experience in Year 2?

      One month
To add to the above, NYGH students use iPad in their learning journey.

NYGH students use iPad from Sec 2 onwards. RGS students use macbook from Sec 1 onwards.

What happen if my household only allow Android / Google / Samsung / Windows product? 😉
Then can't choose either one ... fair n square ... lol ...

My dd DSAed to NYGH few years ago and she is currently in Year 3. So i have no personal interest in DSA 2018.

Both laughingcat and Harrychew are correct … For pure IP schools like RI, RGS, NYGH, HCI, ACSI, DHS, NJC, RV and etc …, the min cut-ff is always set at 200 and above. Reason is because this schools don’t offer NA stream, so the kid doesn’t have the choice to choose either Express or NA if he/she gets 188-199 …

Frank opinion, if the kid is getting around 200, please think twice before accepting CO from IP schools.

Hi all. Would like to ask if the only way to gain admission into Squash CCA is through dsa?

you could ask during the open house which is coming up on 7 April.

I don't think there is Squash CCA in NYGH.

Thank you parents for the feedback. Actually my question is how much is the class fund that your dd contribute every month? (not about whether to give note or not ^-^. Of course I fully understand we have to pay notes...lol)

One just need to count the number of pages, then add the binding cost. roughly $0.03 per page. Maths alone already half inch think double sided, roughly $8 maybe?

I will be more concerned if the school demands $100 for prom night or some other superfluous stuff. Notes? Go ahead so long as is printed at market rate.

I would say don't even need to count ....definitely no overcharging .... lol ...
If the teachers are willing to give notes, just pay and get them .... Very useful I should say ...
