Hi all. I just want to share what happened to my family just recently. We had employed this transfer maid from an agency and thought she would be a good fit to our family due to her eight years experience working for two families in Singapore. She was only with us for about slightly less than one and a half months when she confessed to us that she was in trouble, having taken loans from loan shark, credit companies and fellow maids. Both me and my spouse were so furious with her for within a short time span, she had gone around requiring loans and worst of all, used my name as her guarantor and gave my hp number and home address to the creditors without my knowledge and approval. On the night of her confession, we had paid almost to $1k to an illegal money lender to avoid any disturbance to our home thinking that we would deduct the amount from her next few months’ salary. We then found out that she had many other loans and that keeping her would not be safe for our family. We sent her back to the agent, terminated her work permit and lodged a police report to safeguard our family. The agency had decided not to keep her and she was sent back to her hometown back in Lampung, Indonesia. Now, we are starting to receive demand letters from credit companies and have to waste our precious time and effort to deal with the credit companies on her behalf. Her doings had also caused some frictions between me and my spouse and affected our marriage. She even wrote a letter before she left stating that she would be responsible for all her doings and will not burden anyone. Who was she kidding, taking us for a fool! I have yet to make a report to MOM seeking for her to be blacklisted into coming in to Singapore to work. However, I doubt that she dare to make her way back to Singapore due to her loan activities here. Nonetheless, just be careful of this particular maid. My intention is not to shame her but I do not want any other employers to face similar situation. Also it will be good to check on your maids from now onward, asking if they are involve in any loan activities as a borrower or guarantor.
