    • RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

Thanks for all the prior recommendations. I have finally got him tested... A mixture of feelings after knowing the results. I was relief that it cleared a question that has been lingering for sometime. Worry as there are some emerging traits which i see can be challenging. Due to some behaviour and things DS said, it got us kinda worried and felt that if we dont spend enough time with him to guide him, he will turn out to be a problem kid. He also has asynchronous developments.. A big gap beyond his age. I really really wish he doesn't \"grow\" up so fast. 🙏

    • RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

I saw an earlier post that says if a child is highly/exceptionally gifted, parents can approach the primary school and check if they have support for such children? Any primary school? Does the child still have to undergo the normal P1 registration? Like phrase 2a,b,c, etc etc...?

Sorry doesn't really know how this thing work.. 😓
      Can anyone advise? :celebrate:

    • RE: Need advice on playschool/ Kindergarten registration process

      Hi,

Actually for preschool and kindergarten application, you just need to apply directly to the school itself. You don’t have to go through MOE. There is no special treatment for anyone as long as there is vacancy for the child. (Except some schools have sibling priority). That’s my understanding. Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.

    • RE: How to tell if a child is gifted?

Hi....Can anyone advise on gifted assessment? Help......

      1) How does it benefit the child? Is it really useful? is it a waste of money?
      2) does the education psychologist matter in the assessment? Or any education psychologist can do the job? Any good psychologist to recommend?
      3) what is the price u paid?

I am surprised that DS's school initiated to have him tested for giftedness, in order to support his learning at school. Is the report really that essential that only with it then can the school support the learning? Without the report, hmmmm.....cannot support meh? I have no idea how beneficial is the assessment.

On 1 hand, with the report, i would be happy that the school can step in to assist in his learning cos I have no time to teach him. On the other hand, i am thinking since he is already quite advance for his young age, is it worth to pay thousands for such a report?

I was quoted around from $1k to $3k for such assessment :yikes: ... a wide difference of the fees....But then again, I am not sure how beneficial such report is... DH says this money can pay for enrichment already..

Can anyone who has been through this, advise?
      Thank you so much. :rahrah:

    • RE: International school or local school?

Your choices of international schools after PSLE are pretty much limited to ACS intl, St Joseph Int’l and Hua Chong intl. These are the local "international schools". Govt will not approve the foreign intl schools especially when u are in the local system now.

St Joseph Int’l has been producing relatively good IB results. Hope this helps.

    • RE: Advise pls - Singaporeans in International School

      Hi chxchix,

My DS is in international school in Singapore. His class comprises of different nationalities. He is the only race of his own kind in his class and so are the rest of his classmates. Great diversity. Children are really races/nationality \"blind\" as what slmkhoo has mentioned. I think it is good for children (i would say anyone) to be exposed to diverse cultures.

I think that the employment opportunities in Singapore will be much limited many years down the road. Our children may have to look out for opportunities outside singapore. Be it for employment or business. I think children with such exposure will prepare them for the international stage later years of their lives. (Just my opinion).

In fact, DH has thought of shifting to JB for malborough if needed or enrol him later as boarder. But that's still a long way to go for me as DS is still very young, we are still keeping our options open.

Malborough is a good school so I wouldn't worry. :celebrate:

Just heard on TV this morning...not exact words

\"Education in SG is not about gaining knowledge. It's about passing exams!\"
This is so sad. But I can relate, going through education in Singapore myself!!

      Hi Popcorn

No worries. Yes we did because I really cannot imagine my DD going into the mainstream. I had enough of tea invitations from teachers already! LOL! Saw one of the posting from one parent so I think I may as well highlight to you on some points.
I tried to ask questions like how many local s'poreans are there and they turned me down saying its confidential.
      Good Luck to you! :)[/quote]

      Hi chickenpox,
      Thanks for your helpful information.

I always wonder if DS will kana complaints if he enters primary 1 too. He likes to do his own things (mature mind and has mind of his own). I have seen how he wonders away to explore things of his interest than listening to what the teacher asks them to do. The rest of the children just simply follow and he deviates to do his own things...I am afraid the local school teachers will just find him a \"difficult\" child. I am under the impression that when the teachers speak, they have to guai guai take order and no questions ask. My era is like this... I hope this has changed. Can anyone tell me if this is different now? I have yet to face such situation (tea invitation) cos he attends a international school now and the teacher already notice he is different. The teacher took her initiative to challenge him with K2 stuff without me requesting. The teacher is very receptive to his \"differences\" as the school sees each child as individual with different needs. I don't know abt local schools...

As to know how many Singaporeans are there in the respective Int'l school, the school won't tell but when they celebrate international day where the students dress up according to their countries, u will have a feel of the number of each nationalities there. But of course, u may need to be in the school already or have friends in the school to find out this..
