Of course it is good to have o level classes. However if the criteria to stay in the ip track is to have a msg of less than 3.0( higher than 65 marks), it is no doubt students ( esp the average students) will study in fear for all exam because it decides their fate, ip or o level every year. Can imagine the stress level of the child and parents. Perhaps it is good to see how other ip schools select the students for their o level class. To me, o level class should be for students scoring c5 and below and definitely not b3.

I have a son in HCI and I would like to point out the following:
a) MSG is based on the average of the subject scores. For example, if there are only 3 subjects. english A2, chinese B2, Maths C5. the total is 2+2+5=9. the msg will be 9/3=3

b) the cut off to be sent to the SIP (read \" O level \" ) class is msg of worse than 3. i.e. 3.1 and more

c) What seems to be missing from the above posts is that if the student gets msg of worse than 4, he will be asked to repeat Secondary 2.

Initially, I had also thought that it is a good idea to put the boys into the SIP class if they are not faring well. But then, I did not know that the cut off is msg of 3. Having worse than msg of 3 means average of the subjects is less than 65 marks.

While it is arguable whether this is too stringent, I definitely feel that being asked to repeat a year because the average is less than 60 marks is way too stringent.

When we were selecting secondary schools last year, I attended the open house for HCI. There were questions about the O level class raised by some parents but I don't remember hearing about the cut off score and certainly have no inkling about the criteria for repeating the year.

Let me ask - how many parents would want their child to repeat a year because he scored an average of , say 59 or 58 marks?
What would these parents do? Transfer the kid to another school so that he does not have to repeat secondary 2.

Is this HCI's way of caring for the students? Or is it more to keep the good students so that they will look good for the A level results?

Only 1 uniform OR sport is good enough. Can join clubs also as alternative

NJC is only IP

Can anyone advise me whether any of your sons are in NJ? I noticed that there is a high ratio of girls to boys. How are your sons coping in such an environment?

I am in a dilemma about which school to choose. Although I have read here that NJC has a very good environment, and I want my child to have a fun childhood, I am also worried that he may not be well prepared for his A levels. After all, HCI has an established track record in both the secondary school and JC level, but NJC has not even had their first batch of 6 year students sitting for A levels.
In addition, while I like the boarding school concept in NJC as it teaches the kids to be independent, I am actually very worried about my son’s addiction to computer. I have heard stories that some kids continue with their own activities even after lights out! Aren’t there some controls around these kids?
As for HCI, I have personally heard from 2 concerned parents with kids there about a particular Chinese teacher who gave their kids a hard time as they were not good in Chinese. I had thought that being in a chinese environment would be good for his inadequate Chinese.
Hope to get some views from parents with kids in these schools.

So at the moment will try out group tuition for him ... And if by chance can come across a good private tutor in teaching sec school chinese , then I might persuade my Ds to take 1-1 tuition ....
Anyway will check with hua cheng if they follow RI HCl syllabus closely or not .....

There are remedial classes for those who dont get at least a B4 for each subject. However dont worry! The chinese is not as difficult as you think. There is no penalty for those who keep failing chinese. As long as your ds works hard and pays attention, he can make it!

I have heard that kids who dont make it will be asked to leave the school so that they can do the O level instead. So I was wondering if it is based on Chinese as well. Apparently there is Chinese Literature on top of the usual Chinese textbook? Is that an examinable subject?

Could someone please offer me some advice. DS has been offered a place in HCI but I am worried that he cannot cope as his Chinese is very weak. Despite the principal saying that as long as your child does not hate Chinese, the school will help him. May I know whether there are special programs / tutorials for kids who are weak in Chinese? What happens if he keeps failing his Chinese?
