All P6 students, taking PSLE this year -

so far, how do you all find HBL (Home based learning ) content taught, for core subjects (languages English, Chinese, Maths, Science) ?

(won't mention the Non-Psle subjects here like Art, PE)

Any of your (or which) primary schools, using or implemented the interactive online Zoom technology, for above Psle examinable 4 subjects, because these 4 subjects will be used to determine your exiting T-score final last batch, entering Secondary schools next year ?

Or

most of u still using SLS (Student learning space) ?

Shall see the next few days. Last Wed was still mainly SLS. No live teaching yet.
Sigh ... stressful... esp for teachers & parents!
Hopefully the learning won’t be too compromised.

Hi Xueyan,

I think there are some considerations to your question:

- Do you have the time and able to teach him Maths confidently yourself?
- Your boy has any feedback? Any pref for 1-1 or group? If group, you have to see if he can keep up during the group lessons.
- And if you can teach him yourself, will it ‘affect’ your rship? That’s the questions I ask myself often too if I shld ‘outsource’ my boy’s weaker subjects to tuition. Even though I might be able to teach, I don’t want to be the one feeling frustrated and stressed all the time spend during weekends just preparing materials and teaching him (coz I am ftwm). Need a life too 😂
But having said that, I do follow up with the tutors. Definitely can’t be entirely hands off at this stage, but it’s less stress when I know his tutor can cover most areas and I reinforce.

- Have you gone thru the paper 2 with him? Is it more of concept errors, careless or exam stamina ....
- There are assessment books which focus on Paper 2, if you want to teach him ... how did he do for his P5 SA2 paper 2?

And do seek the Maths teacher’s advice to find out if can get extra help fr the school, or if your boy can keep up during regular maths lessons.

Must be stressful but actually it’s gd that your school has CA1 as most schools don’t have till SA1 ... so you find out his weakness now and have some time to close the gap...

I also feel stressed at times coz dunno if the school is preparing them well enough ... and can’t really tell until SA1 😕

Just my 2 cents. Jia you ok!! 💪🏻💪🏻
(PS: my boy needs to be pushed too zzzz....)

Thanks pslemum for your thoughts. I do agree that i do not have too much time to teach ds as i am a FTWM. Hubby commented that it seems the tuition did not help ds at all. Before this maths tutor, i was coaching ds all the while. At that time, his grades seems to be better. That's why i thought of teaching him. However, I am really not confident of some complicated problem sums.

I blame it on myself that I leave the tutor to prepare him. i should have follow up and revise with him after each lesson.

Is there any Maths assessment book that you recommend?

I am really afraid to look for tutor because we do not know whether he/she is really teaching. A lot of them just 混日子...
Welcome!
John has recommended OnSponge Essential, Conquer - I like both as well, you can try Essential first as it comes with more examples and not as intimidating for your ds since he is weak in problem sums. You can try Oodles centre too as they specialise in problem sums. But not sure if your son can keep up in a group setting.
I quite like Fan Maths assessment books as well.

Yeah getting a gd 1-1 tutor is really a hit and miss. Plus must connect with your boy otherwise difficult to teach and engage the child too. Maybe can ask your friends or your ds’ classmates if they have recommendations for 1-1 since stay at same area.
Parents,
May i check with you whether you leave entirely to the tutors to help your kid in preparation of PSLE?

As PSLE is a high stake National exam, and the children at 12 years old or 11 years old + (for year-end born kids) are still very young, best if parents are around to help supervise, provide guidance

- to what extent have your child finished revision for the various subjects' topics expected, and

- to what extent or degree, does your child understand so far, per each topic ?

As for DSA, it is good to try out, experience the process themselves.
But have or don't have DSA offer, never mind. At end of the day, Tscore (results) is a clearer, more accurate picture, of where your child truly stand. Is he (she) stronger in languages, or in Maths & Science ?

We engaged this Maths tutor since April 2019 (when ds is P5). There is no improvement in marks in P5 SA2. But we continue with her as she seems a nice tutor. I leave her to teach problem sums as ds is very weak. I also tell tutor that i will not coach ds in her homework so that she knows whether ds understand what she taught.

My ds is a very lazy boy. After tuition, will not revise. Got to push push push. Hid nonchalant attitude really irks me...

Ds just got back his common test paper. He failed very badly for paper 2. Should i change to another 1 to 1 tutor? Should i teach myself? Should i register to go for commercial school like JustEd, mindstretcher?
Hi Xueyan,

pslemum2020, if the COVID-19 situation allows for it, I will.

Meanwhile, I have updated the PSLE past year oral themes (历届口试课题 2008-2019) . It's accessible via the last pdf icon https://chenlaoshi.wixsite.com/psleprepclass/scope-of-curriculum.

Most school's Pri 6 SA1 oral is in Term 2 Week 4 (wk beginning 13 Apr) or 5 (wk beginning 20 Apr). 不要临时抱佛脚哦! 😂

Thanks! 好的!
Look forward to seeing your June class schedule! 😝

The norm for PSLE Exam dates are:
Oral: Thur, Fri of Wk after National Day
LC: Fri of Term 4 Wk 1
Written Examination: Begins on Thur of Term 4 Wk 3 (2019 earlier by 1 week - Children's Day fall on Fri of Term 4 Wk 3)
PSLE Marking: Mon to Thur of Term 4 Wk 6 (2019 earlier by 1 week)
• 2016 -->
LC Fri 16 Sep
Written Paper Thur 29 Sep

2017 -->
LC Fri 15 Sep
Written Paper Thur 28 Sep

2018 -->
LC Fri 14 Sep
Written Paper Thur 27 Sep

2019 -->
LC Fri 20 Sep
Written Paper Thur 26 Sep
•
The usual practice is to have a week's gap between LC and Written Examinations. However, Term 4 in 2019 is only 9 weeks instead of the usual 10 weeks.

Since Term 4 in 2020 will be 10 weeks again, it is highly likely that they will revert to the \"1 week gap\" arrangement. This probably explains why Children's Day is pushed backwards - to ensure that it's after PSLE has completed.

Thus, the probable dates are:

PSLE schedule is out: https://www-seab-gov-sg-admin.cwp.sg/docs/default-source/examination-timetable/2020psleexamtimetable.pdf

169 days to oral examination. :rahrah:

regarding the T-score, I am still clueless how this works. I just know it is like a bell-curve. But I feel no need to bother too much with this. I always tell my son just work hard and do your best. At the end of the learning journey, you look back, you will have no regrets.
Hi 5 to that!! 👊🏻👊🏻💪🏻💪🏻 The ‘no regrets’ is a motto which we hold on too. Told my son the results / outcome we can’t control fully due to many factors but we can see and he certainly has control over the efforts he wants to put in.

pslemum2020,

I am a PTWM, and also like you, giving daily bite-sized assessments for him to do. I buy phd education booklets for him to work on as I like their structure and answers, and pang yian math too. Actually, his school gives quite a lot of hw, so he cant do much too. I'm not sure if the intensity of their hw will increase gradually. I'm wondering if I should buy the past years papers (with SA 1 & 2 ones), prelim papers, or just focus on past psle papers? What are you buying?

We are really quite similar haha. I have gotten the other school papers but won’t like him do till nearer SA1 (his school no CA), I feel he has to learn the topics well first. Heard schools will get the PSLE papers too. His teachers haven’t been giving a lot of homework though. Probably still relax mode 🤨
