    • My child wants to opt out of CCA in Sec School

Sorry new here. I am at a loss. My son entered Sec 1 in 2025 and wanted to join a particular sports CCA in school. He went on several rounds of trials until he was dropped at the last stage. Unfortunately the school’s CCA function on trials only for sports. There is no option for recreation and by the time he was dropped, most trials were over. He got placed in his 3rd choice CCA and hates it. What makes it worse is the commitment is heavy like 3 times a week including Saturdays. I can’t justify forcing him to spend hours on something he hates. But I feel like I am fighting the school on a simple request to change CCA. The discussion has been going in circles for months and he has been made to go from teacher to teacher and get rounds of forms and approvals. He didn’t want to attend his current CCA while awaiting a CCA change this has affected his CCA record. Which in turn, I am told, could affect his chances of being accepted into the new CCA. So disappointed with the way the school has handled this. Anyone have a similar experience? I am honestly considering just telling the school he is opting out of CCA entirely.

    • RE: Tanjong Katong Girls' School

      kekeia:
Attend the ‘Ask the leaders’ session to find out more about the school if you havnt had a chance.

Next year Sec 1 will be back at the Dunman campus!

Plenty of CCA options for the girls. Usually twice a week. School ends at 2:40 on most days with Friday ending earlier at 1:40( if I recall exact timing).

Girls can go pretty crazy but school is strict when it comes to discipline, punctuality etc...they are given forms if they are late for school or commit an offence, which is what I like.

Thanks for that!! Didn't know they had such a session cos we missed open house. Think we will go down.

My DD got 242 and we are thinking of TKGS too. What do you think? I know there is like Crescent Girls and other schools but they are far away. Would appreciate some insight into the school, culture, teachers etc. Thanks!! :please:

    • RE: Tanjong Katong Primary

      Hi.

I just registered my son for P1 in TKPS.

Looking at all the ballotting taking place in other schools, even some like SSS, makes me wonder if I made the right choice.

Like…why does TKPS have a lower take-up rate?

But I’ve heard great things about the school and even tho SSS is within 1km fr home, I chose to reg here. Heard the kids enjoy school and the extra-curricular progs are good.

Hm…anyone out there also registered for P1 in 2011 and wanna share your thots?

Guess I’m just looking for someone to tell me I made the right choice…Hahaha!

    • RE: [Marine Parade] Primary Schools

      Hi.

What do you think the chances are if I’m not PV. I stay within 1-2km of Ngee Ann and Tanjong Katong Pri and I have no other affiliation to the school?

I don’t really believe in "involuntary volunteering" to get my son in (no slight intended to the dedicated PVs out there!). I’d rather volunteer when he’s in the school so we can share the experience together. So I kinda skipped that step.

My son is a kinesthetic learner, much like me. Highly energetic, explorative and experiential-based. I myself was a Theatre student. I understand the need to get him accustomed to the Singapore Education "rat race", but I also want him to develop the love for learning, reading, questioning beliefs and ideas. I also want to build his confidence. All these, to me, are far more important than academic excellence, which is easily honed thereafter.

      So from what I gather…
Tanjong Katong sounds like a fun place.
Ngee Ann seems to be the "People’s Choice".
Temasek Pri has some history and mixed reviews.

      And I haven’t got a clue.

      Help…???
