• RE: Is GEP really necessary?
With all the perks and privileges, if GEP continues to fail to produce students BETTER than mainstream, there is going to be further discrimination against GEPpers.....

the unwarranted privileges given to GEPpers.....

Hi 2ppaamm, may I know what are the perks and privileges that GEP have besides smaller ratio of teacher to student and DSA?

Hi Comfy, you might want to do some research around the GEP thread to get this answer, I won't be able to give you a complete list at this time, because I have to go sleep. 🙂

Till next year, everyone, Bye bye! :imanisland:
Hi Comfy
Do you agree that gep breeds overinflated ego within the children and that gep kids are given \"unwarranted privileges\" - meaning unjustified, not reasonable, not necessary?

I have a gep kid and I know the kids in her class. Her good friend meets up with her former classmates from a non-gep school frequently. My dd's HCL mainstream(intermingled class) often sms for help and my dd helps her. No, I do not see any overinflated egos in my dd or her classmates. They are just like any other kids. They work hard to produce good works. Sometimes, I find the amount of work they have to handle quite overwhelming. Not all kids can handle the demands. Besides class-size, what unwarranted privileges do they have? I am peeved when people make statements, do not justify them and then run away. Is it wrong to have special programmes for pull-out students who are capable of moving on to a higher level? Is it justiable to hold them back just to be fair to everyone else? No, gep is not an elitist programme. My dd is very fortunate to be in the programme. It is a good programme.

RGS does not have any affiliated primary school. A lot of people mistakenly assume that RGPS is affiliated to RGS. It is not.

Why leh? How about GEP RGPS girls ? Some kind of non-verbal priority given in the past rite? :siam:

jtoh is right. There is absolutely no affiliation. There is absolutely no special advantage in sharing the same name, unlike affiliated schools. Why did you say there is some non-verbal priority? Can you share where you get that kind of information from?

G Tan:

Can I ask what other schools did you apply for your child? We applied RGS, ScGS, BPGH, NusHigh,MGS
Would it be stressful going for DSA test/interview for 5 schools? Would appreciate if you could let us know your experience and what kind of questions asked during the diff interviews.

Stressygirl:
HI dear parents etc. EMERGENCY

erm...im doubting whether to DSA now...
cuz ive no CCA avail/musical talents to DSA with so only academics can

I am in mainstream,so called in the '1st class' in the school. My CCA is E2K and NYGH is not accepting that cca,but i have not asked RGS about it.My score for SA this time was 339.3/400 but i can say that not a lot of people has gotten 360/370 kinda thing.I might DSA using academics but for New South Wales math and eng p4 and 5,i got credit. For science,i only got distinction for both P4 & 5.For CCA,i participated in a virtual competition and came in 1st nationally and 3rd internationally.I used to be in Chinese Orchestra and Athletics and quit for certain reasons. My CO instruments is YangQin and i got all Merit for Grades 2,4 & 5.I have taken ballet exams from pre-syllabus(for this ballet exam) to grade 5.From grade 1 to 4,i have got all distinction but a kind of high Merit for grade 5.That's about it.
So I would like to ask,in this case, what are my chances if i DSA for NYGH and RGS.

Please help and reply ASAP.
Hi Stressygirl,
I have to agree with Jtoh that your chances doesn't seem high. I hope your reason for DSA-ing is not due to peer pressure. Not jumping on the bandwagon can be stressful. This may also be a distraction from your PSLE preparation. If you know you can take the added stress of DSA and not get distracted by the outcome, then perhaps go for it. It also seems like a lot of people are limiting their choice to these schools. Ignore this old aunty if this is not true - don't follow the crowd. Know your own strength and weakness.

• RE: GEP - General Syllabus Discussion

Hi, I know some of you may want to throw rocks at me for my comments. I am really wondering aloud the purpose of all these comparisons and how it will help in the learning process of our children in the Gep other than adding unnecessary stress. We should aim to improve our child’s personal best/worse/average. If first we compare with classmates, then with the whole class, then with the school, then across schools, and perhaps next step would be intl GEPs of all countries, there would be no end to comparing. Gep is a learning process. What can I do with all these statistics, can someone enlighten me?

Happy New Year to all . Do we need to include the P4,P5,P6 projects done by the students in DSA Portfolio. Please advise

For my ds , he did not put any of his gep project in his portfolio. He only represented one which was asked to do so during RI interview.

Hi Vlim,
So, for Gep, what are the stuff that we should put into the portfolio that will help the dsa? Read sometime ago that some interviewers did not look at the portfolio file at all. And.....any idea if questions are impromptu or actually needs preparation? Thanks.

• RE: 2011 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

I am going against the flow again...... 🦆 No kid gone thru PSLE yet, so not crystal clear yet.....

Why don't make it such that after accepting CO, give choice to skip PSLE. Why go thru' the motion to show a score that no one will care after you get into sec school? Can stipulate time spent on other things like community work, etc. More productive.

If kid/parent is serious in trying again after CO, then opt for PSLE second chance. These will not be frivilous ks cases. Kiasu, yes, but need to work harder for being kiasu...

After all, some go for \"O\" and \"A\" and some skip.
