A warm welcome to all NEW DHS PARENTS :celebrate:

:congrats: to all kids who have gotten into DHS...

Enjoy a fresh new Fun n enriching education journey here !!!

Hi Augmum,

My DD got into DHS :rahrah:

May I ask about the school shoes? What is acceptable?

Congrats to Oxxo n yr DD... šŸ˜„

Regarding the sch shoes...from the student handbook...it is stated that ...
Only track shoes are allowed, MUST NOT be Flashy in colors n design...
Unlike in the past, where they only allowed shoes with abt 70% white ...

I had seen students wearing light blue or grey color track shoes...
Anyway, some pupils wear bolder colors to \"test water\" .... if u are not caught, then ok lor...if caught, will have to change to another pair... šŸ˜‰

As for socks, plain white socks, visible above the rim of the shoes...
Hello! An email has been sent to next year's Y2-Y6 informing us of a change in the school's code of conduct regarding shoes:

All students are to wear plain white socks and they must be clearly visible above the rim of the shoes. Socks that only cover the sole are not allowed.
Only track shoes and pure white canvas shoes are allowed in school. Track shoes are encouraged as they protect the feet and secure the ankles during physical activities.
Track shoes and shoe laces must not be flashy in design and colour.
The approved colour for shoes (and shoe laces) shall be white, or a dominant colour of blue, grey or black

tl;dr, encouraged to wear track shoes, track shoes (and laces) must be predominantly blue grey or black, non-flashy colours, if your child chooses to wear canvas shoes they must be white.

Hello parents! Looked up this page out of pure interest and I can't help but give my 2 cent's thoughts and share some knowledge on some of the issues raised here...after all students are the one getting firsthand experience in the school. Maybe this post might be a little too late because I have no clue when S1 posting online forms have to be submitted, but here goes

(I'm a Year 5 moving on to Year 6- took triple science + geog in Year 3 and 4 and now in a hybrid class, performing arts CCA, also involved in leadership positions outside of CCA)

To start off- the cut-off point. No hiding that the COP has dropped over the years to the mid-250 range, but I do not think that this means the quality of education your child would receive in DHS is deteriorating. In fact, teachers are constantly reviewing syllabus, asking for opinions from us seniors about how they can better improve the syllabus to benefit our juniors (which to me makes much sense because we're at the immediate receiving end of our teachers' efforts.) I would attribute the drop in COP to the increasing number of IP schools in the East (think TJC, Victoria-Cedar Alliance) and an increasing supply of places in the IP programme.

Personally, I'm immensely thankful for my teachers. Every dunmanian would unanimously agree that our teachers has our best interests at heart, and they are more than willing to sacrifice their time to give us consultations even though they are in no way obliged to do so. Some teachers even stay till very late (7pm, 8pm, 9pm) to give consultations, especially during the period leading up to PW submission. More importantly, many of us regard our teachers as our friends and apart from studies we can 'catch' them in the canteen, rant about our life, share our problems, ask for advice, and they'll be more than happy to share.

Some parents here have pointed out the trend of good DHS teachers leaving for other schools- here's what I have to say: the good teachers may leave occasionally, the better ones stay. We have teachers that have taught in DHS for very very long, by this I mean 10, 15, 20, a few even 30 years or more, and interestingly enough these are the teachers that students know to be \"very strict with us but has our best interests at heart, so fine if they scold me\". šŸ™‚

SBGE classes. In year 1 they consist of GEPpers and students who have done exceedingly well in their PSLE but not in GEP programme. When it comes to subject based SBGE in Y3, I think there isn't much difference in syllabus..just that if you're in an SBGE class you'll probably be surrounded with people who do well in the specific SBGE subject. SBGE stretches students a little more, not excessively. But teachers teaching normal classes would also try to incorporate the SBGE part of the curriculum while teaching their other classes just to satisfy our thirst for more knowledge. It is also made clear to students that these are non-examinable so that we don't waste our time memorising extra content. Some (albeit minimal) JC content is also covered in Year 3/4, though it is quite surface level and does not go as in depth as what would be covered in JC.

School environment. I like how each cohort is relatively small compared to mainstream JCs and by Senior High it seems as though everyone knows everyone (especially when we are 'stuck' together for 6 years) and I like that feeling, it gives a very homely feel. Being in the same school for 6 years does have its pros and cons, but for me and many of my friends it did help a lot when we were integrating and getting used to Senior High, joining new CCAs and new classes etc. Dunmanians are also very helpful when it comes to learning and especially in junior high, many of us collaborate when it comes to studying eg. opening google docs to collate notes, helping each other to scan essays, things like that. It makes learning much easier and bearable and it cultivates a spirit of sharing in each batch of students. Teachers would sometimes encourage such collaborative learning by encouraging us to do things like pasting newspaper articles on notice board etc.

True that our JC section is young, but I believe it has been making much improvements over past year, and in senior high almost everyone gets an A for PW šŸ™‚ have to take into account the time taken for the teachers to build their departments, come up with teaching materials, and improve on them as the years go by! Am sure by the time your children come up to Senior High, the SH section would be much stronger and more stabilised.

All in all DHS has given me a wonderful experience which I am very eager to share with the parents here šŸ™‚ I think that's all, hope your children will enjoy their DHS journey as much as I currently am!

Louis, bought the uniforms but having a hard time with the metal buttons. Heard there is a way to sew it so that they can be removed easily.

Any idea? TIA.

Ehh... no idea. :scratchhead:

hello! currently y4 moving on y5, I've saved loads of time over the past years by sewing on plastic shirt buttons to the back of the metal button so you just secure the metal button by slipping the plastic button in the smaller hole like how you'd button a shirt. be sure the plastic buttons are big enough so they won't fall out during the day. This is probably quite late, but I hope this little tip helps. cheers!

PiggyLalala:

I have a question that I always want to ask.

Since Ip schools like dhs and rvh have no year 5 intake, do they start teaching the a level syllabus in year 4. Personally I feel tt to complete the a level syllabus in 2 yrs can be quite stressful. It will be gd if these schools can start the a level preparation in mid year 4.

No, A level syllabus is not taught in Yr 4...

Edit to add : at least not fr my gal's batch, am not sure abt the junior batch
PiggyLalala:
Or dhs is like the other ip schools where the a level topics are only introduced in year 5 n 6.
Yes...

Hi, would like to clarify on this matter. I'm currently a year 4 student in dhs and the school does move some content from A level syllabus to upper secondary as long as the concepts are somewhat easier to grasp. It does give us more time to 'practice' and adapt to the new styles of qns in senior high. If you are interested, some examples of this happening include moving the spdf formation for chemistry from JC to year 3 and introducing application questions for LA/GP (usually only introduced in JC) to us in year 4. Definitely gives us a headstart over our peers. šŸ™‚

oldmummy:
Hi

Does anybody know if there's any particular ranking of classes in year 3? Thanks
Hello! I'm a Y3 student in Dunman High and I happened to come across this page.

there actually isn't any sort of official ranking in the Y3 classes but general rule of thumb is that upper level classes= better, although there are exceptions.

However, there is subject enrichment in Y3 and the syllabus is only very slightly different and is not tested in EOY, more for general knowledge, and sometimes the teachers would 'sneak in' some of enrich syllabus for the non-enrich classes. (I'm a triple science+ geog student with no enrich).

I have also seen some discussion as to how students are selected for the various subject enrichment. There are a few methods from the school that are circulating but the most popular method is that it is based on what subject enrich the SBGE people in Y2 choose, and they will try to allocate according to what the SBGE people opt for, and then sort in the non-SBGE students. So for eg for my year there was no demand for science+hist enrich so there was no class at all for sci+history enrich.

Hope this clarifies!
