@RAY142,

All students in Sec 1 need to attend the Olympic Math or only selected ones? Thanks

Not sure abt but ds took test 24/25 correct olympiad maths
Maths is in year2 class in year1

DS2 got 21/25 for MO exam but he was not told there is any MO training during Jun holidays, so I guess it's only for selected students. Those very very talented ones. šŸ˜‚

I definitely wouldn't mind if the school can give him \"free special training\" this holiday to prepare for coming SMO since I didn't send him for any external training.
21 correct answers is already very good. U can buy past AME 8 questions from MAA.
Because it is NUS High School of Maths and Science - the expectations of the students and the standards are much higher than the other Sec 1 or 2

If you want to compare - then compare with schools like RI, RGS, Cedar or SST

In general, the contents and the level that were taught in these school were higher (than other schools) and in NUSH is slightly even higher.
However, the students have the abilities and capabilities to absorb and understand the higher order concepts.

This is what make NUSH so different from others.
The training is much more vigorous and really prepare them for a much higher level of demand in higher institute of learning. The better ones are even taking their lessons in NUS itself (attending classes together with the undergrad)

A lot of the graduates from NUSH usu end up in some overseas Uni with scholarships.

my 2cents knowledge incl more direct experience.

I agreed with u , my ds is in year1 he already feel it is quite demanding in his study. This june holiday is being burnt.his teacher or mentor has arrange lessons for him during this june holidays.those who intend to join this school must prepare to learn above their current age. This school minimum passing mark for subject is 75%(cap3.5/5) same as gep school .quoted by teacher(average result cap4).With this system i dont see any reason, any dc failing after reaching year6.From my impression students from this school will tell u .They spent time n effort to study study study

What subject lesson does he have during the June hols?
I was told by a NUSH staff at one of the DSA booth, the questions for Math and Science are Sec 1 level standard.

I believe the scope and format of questions would be a test of:

      - understanding of PSLE Maths and science,
      - logic, creativity and insight of applications of concept outside of PSLE syllabus
      - demonstrated keen interest and advance understanding of S(cience), T(echnology), E(ngineering) and M(athematics) beyond P6.

To add more the dc must have the right attitude to learn n perserver

To date, the greatest /furthest acceleration for any NUSH student (subject wise) was in 2011 batch. The Hong Kong teenager in Y1 diagnostic accelerate to Y5 Maths (top Y5 math that year) and Y4 Physics respectively. He completed his Y2 in NUSH and became a \"drop out\" . He was accepted by Hong Kong university at the age of 15.

Being knowledgeable is one thing, dropout n enter university at a young age is that a wise move for the dc.it takes some thinking? We want our dc to be happy n confidence in life most of all age related expenence as they grow older

As far as I know, last year's year1 only had 2 students accel to year 2 and 1 student accel to year 3.

I think the diagnostic tests are not easy, since they include topics such as Matrix, etc, so for students who are not exposure to such topics, they may not even pass the tests. šŸ˜“

Correction only 3 dc pass n accel to year2
      1dc accel to year3

So he has gone through 2 rounds of acceleration tests for Math as of now ? Then chances of acceleration should be very high. Did you received any reply from teacher in charge ?

Not yet 2 round only 5 dc including him sat for the test

Hmm ... so he and 4 others sat for 2nd round but yet to receive the outcome ? My guess is the 2nd test is to determine which level they can accelerate to. All the best for your DS and do share with us the good news ! šŸ˜‰
As far as I know, last year's year1 only had 2 students accel to year 2 and 1 student accel to year 3.
