Going for P1 orientation this Thursday. I think Pei Chun is one of the last school to have orientation.

For those registering Pei Chun this year for P1 next year, I was told by the school that P1 and P2 are PM session. P3-P6 AM sessions. Not sure when the whole school will be single (AM) session.

After so many yrs, Pei Chun is still pretty rich with Chinese culture and place great emphasize on the language.... u can see \"Di Zhi Gui\" all over the place. However most students (at least for my kid and his class/friends) seem to be still very much \"potato kids\".. they still converse in English most of the time and he ever mentioned to me none of his classmates speak Mandarin.

However i can only speak for lower primary - so far my kid is coping ok with the language & tests.[/quote]

I remember last time we were speaking so much Mandarin that we have a month called \"Speak English campaign\". During that month, other than Chinese lessons, you can only speak English to one another. Each of us were given 30 (or 40) coupons. If someone caught you speaking non-English, they will ask \"can i have a coupon please?\" After the campaign was over, the student with the most coupons (usually >100) will be the winner and given a book (English book of course) or book vouchers. If you have 0 coupons before the end of the month, you will need to see the teacher to \"appeal\" for more coupons and that is not really a nice visit.

Well... those were the days.

Thanks for all the advise. I think we will stick to Pei Chun at 2A2 and see how she copes in the school.

Whatever outcome is your balloting for 2c ij Toa Payoh -
You can't go back pei chun anymore.
The moment you withdraw from pei chun, your seat is given immediately to next child on waiting list, into pei Chun.

Pei chun is a sap school.
For p1 to p3 (lower primary)- help your daughter focus in building a very strong foundation in Chinese. Pei Chun is the school that can help her achieve this. Build up strong chinese is the key thing for initial first 3 years. then her upper primary (p4 to p6) will be smoother.

Everywhere you go, the school walls remind every student in pei Chun to have good moral character values. It is so hard to find schools like this, that constantly remind kids of good behavior. Nowadays, our kids are always bombarded by negative, worldly influence.

Moreover, pei chun teachers are hardworking and on the ball type. They bother to walk the extra mile to set up parents workshop, teach parents how to guide Maths modeling problem sums to p1, p2 pUpils in April, ie. p1 term 2.

Next time when your girl p6 -
You can send her to chij st Nicholas secondary, if she keen. She only have o level express stream, or integrated program. Chij Toa Payoh secondary has normal stream and express o level stream.

If you seriously keen in ij school, Perhaps can consider seek transfer to either ij school. This is a safer road than to give up yr 2a seat.
Usually end of p3 when some ij toa payoh or st nick p3 girls offered Gep pgm, that's when more vacancies start to arise. Since pei chun is sap school and standard of ij st nick is higher than standard of ij Toa Payoh and st nick is sap school whereas Toa Payoh is not, perhaps transfer her to st nick instead. Ie. from one sap school to Another sap school.

As my previous reply to magiccastle, my only concern is the standard of Chinese. Not really sure whether she can cope. The feedback I got from her K2 chinese teacher is that she is OK in chinese - can understand, read, speak... but she don't do any or much of those with us so we are a bit doubtful whether the teacher is trying to please us and not let us get too worried.

As for your suggestion of changing schools at P3, you mentioned that st nick is GEP. So they would be selective in who they admit, right? I checked that st nick is a bit out of the way in AMK St. 13. Can consider but that will be 3 years down the road.

Another school of thought that we have heard is that if you put your child through higher chinese and your child cannot cope, when the child goes back to normal chinese, the child would have an easier time. That would depend on the child and how the child cope with it.

1 more month to P1 registration... the countdown has begun...

Moreover, if the phrase 2A still exist in future , your grandchildren - whether boy or girl still can go to a good school. If it is CHIJ , grand son can't go liao. :rotflmao:

For secondary school , then I will prefer my child to go either a all boys or girls school.
But for CHIJ , there is affiliation for secondary school.

We are all good about Pei Chun except the Chinese. Coming from Pei Chun, I knew how demanding and high the standard of Chinese was back then and I would not want to put my daughter to undue stress. At the moment, she is already very weak in Chinese although we speak and read to her but he simply refuse to answer or communicate with us in Chinese.

I heard that for Pei Chun, they offer Higher Chinese for P1-3 and then if the child cannot cope then go back to normal Chinese. Is that true?

You have to withdraw from Pei Chun before u can even apply for CHIJ. You can't have the cake and eat it too.

So 2 parents have to standby 1 at pei chun n 1 at CHIJ to monitor the situation before phrase 2C registration close. Once confirm last min can get place at CHIJ , then 1 parent has to quickly withdraw from Pei Chun n then apply to CHIJ.

Advice from everyone welcome. This may sound silly but I am going to try.


I am an old boy of Pei Chun and logically, I would put my daughter in Pei Chun under Phase 2A(2).

But we would like our daughter to go to CHIJ (Toa Payoh). That would be Phase 2C.

So the question:
Do I give up my place in Phase 2A(2) the moment I apply for Phase 2C at CHIJ or do I give up my place only if I am successful in balloting for a place in CHIJ.

The reason being we would like our daughter to be in an all-girls school.

Or should I just put her in Pei Chun.
