[quote="slmkhoo"]A question about Yr 1/2 Physics/Chem/Bio - I understand that the textbooks are not much used and teachers provide notes. However, since we are overseas, I only have access to the topics list on iNET and the textbooks at the moment. My question is - do the teachers cover all the material in the textbooks under the topics listed? Or do they do it more simply for lower sec? It seems like most of the Physics ‘O’ level topics are covered in Yr 1/2 - is that really the case? That’s my least favourits science subject, and the less I have to homeschool the better![quote="slmkhoo"]
the textbooks are not much used IN CLASS, but as reference materials they are extremely good and useful since teachers don’t really teach much for LSS science, its pretty much self-learning. some online materials and worksheets are provided occasionally (about two per topic, one MCQ - self-marked and one open-ended - to be handed in) but they aren’t comprehensive enough nor are they sufficient in helping you understand the concepts. the textbooks are also for reading up before class to understand the concepts…
topics covered for physics are Measurement, light, sound and thermal physics

RE: Compare RGS vs NYGH
Haha this thread is so interesting

thought i would share some of my views
If you ask me, of course, i definitely would say Raffles and most of my peers too. despite the work and the late nights, i would say, it really isn't that stressful. actually the work and tests are perfectly manageable with good planning and of course, Don't spend too much time on Facebook and other stuff (like me :P) that just leads to like 3am nights before submission of AAs ^^ and it will be almost like nothing, in year 1 anyway
i feel that the environment raffles creates is that we are all very self-driven and motivated to do our best and that's very important cos for lower sec science especially, self-directed learning is necessary and also, senior-junior relationships are...erm...quite good i guess  so they do help us when we need help with work basically.
and i feel that raffles really changes you (NOT meant to be that kinda cheesy cliche line, i mean it) its like after just half-a-year i feel so different, and so much more confident...at least i know what I'm working towards, its more than just results and academic excellence, its more like what you really want to achieve in life. my critical thinking skills seemed to have improved at any rate
(Not really related
)
but at the end of the day, i think, to choose a school, you really have to consider your DD's choice, i think that parents should guide them and come to a decision together, but try not to force them into a school if they're really against it. sorry no offence to wendyng0114, its just that most of the ppl i know who got forced into a school totally hates it now
I have one CCA mate who is trying to find a way to transfer to NYGH although her parents strongly disagree...and she's downright miserable...and yeah, try not to be led by the crowd, 'cos friends can be made!
and in RG, your peers are really awesome, we always go out and have fun together when we're free LOL ^^ in fact, all my best friends now aren't even those from my primary school though we're all in RG
i would just add factors to consider would be mainly the programs offered, and the culture of the school. really.
and just a tip for the interview~if asked about the choice of school thing, just answer honestly. answer everything honestly. RG likes that. My interview mates, one from NYPS said that NYGH was her first choice honestly another one from St. Hilda's said she wasn't sure yet and pretty much fumbled throughout the interview saying that NYGH and RGS both had their good points...the NYPS girl got in the St. HIlda's one didn't. though both are now in RG though
Oops sorry, for the super long post i sorta got carried away sorry!!! -

RE: Ballet @ Crestar school of dance
Very late but I just stumbled on this thread and thought i'll give some opinions

I was in Crestar ballet from 3yo-8yo started with bebe ballet ended with grade 3 then my branch closed down so i transferred to another school...now I'm doing grade 8
but anyway, i just think that if you're just looking for your dd to have fun, crestar is a gd choice since its more for young kids to have fun etc
but if u want your dd to go far in ballet and really do well in it, i would suggest you let her try another school, because Crestar doesn't really produce gd students accept the Marine Parade branch I found out only after i transferred school that all my teachers were never registered certified teachers of RAD!!!! :yikes:
and some centers also only do CSTD so well, for CSTD, its really for pleasure so yeah ><
In crestar, I had fun but didn't do so well always low merit...then after i transferred school it was more strenuous training but i did better too distinctions...^^
just my opinions

RE: Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) [*IP]
Hi,
What are House Practices for? (like what you do)
Roughly how long do they last?
Is it compulsory for everyone to represent their house in something?
What are the possible activities we can represent our house in?
TIA
