RE: Letterpress Studio Guided Tour
Letterpress is the oldest traditional printing technique that purportedly started from the time of Gutenberg, about 1450. It was subsequently superseded by lithography late in the 18th century and, especially, offset lithography early in the 20th. The letterpress is the enabler of the Christian Reformation and countless revolutions all around the world.
Yao Yu has been a letterpress researcher, enthusiast and collector for > a decade and through this intimate 1.5 hour guided tour, he will enthral you with stories behind the extensive artefects that trace the letterpress development over the past 100+ years and how century-old norms found its way to how we use typeface and fonts on computers. He will also be sharing insights into both Chinese and English letterpress with a focus on the developments in Singapore & Malaysia. Participants will also get to hands-on with the printing press and bring back prints from vintage printing blocks.
