Cher2101:
DS got one CO from school A and WL from school B.

School A have Express, Normal(A) and Normal(T) classes. School B has only Express class.
If she place school B as 1st choice and school A as 2nd choice. What will happen if her PSLE result only get 160?
Will she be posted to school A??
If 200 points is the minimum for express course, what is the minimum for normal(A)?
Hi Cher2101, I used to think that wl is dependent on students who gave up CO as well as one’s ranking on the wl plus how far is one’s t-score from the COP of the school, hence, I would have thought that you would likely be admitted to School A last time. But now, knowing that school can have discretionary appeal route, I would suggest that you checked with school B what are the conditions and process for wl students

CMF:
The MOE website states :

\t
How much discretion will the secondary schools have for Direct School Admission - Secondary (DSA-Sec) Exercise?

Schools with Integrated Programme (IP) will generally admit up to 50% of their Secondary One intake through the DSA-Sec Exercise. Independent Schools (without IP), Autonomous Schools (without IP), and Schools with Distinctive Programmes (i.e. schools with Applied Learning Programme/Learning for Life Programme/Niche Programme) will generally admit up to 20%, 10% and 5% respectively. Specialised Independent Schools (viz. NUS High School, School of the Arts, School of Science and Technology) will have full discretion in admission.
thanks CMF. The above mention that it is \"generally\".

Following is from a forummer in year DSA 2011 thread - I don't know how to link there so I copy and paste here. (But the link to the website does not seem to work now)

http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissi ... discretion

How much discretion will the Sec Schools have for 2011 DSA-Sec Exercise?

Type of School\tDiscretionary Places
Schools with Integrated Programme (IP) or Specialised Independent Schools (viz. NUSHS, SOTA, SST)\tUp to 100%
Independent Schools (without IP)\t20%
Autonomous Schools (without IP)\t10%
Niche Programme Schools\t5%

But information from 2011 could have changed by now. Anyway, every school has their own processes, so whatever 200 CO or 250 CO or 200 CO and 50 sure get in wls, its good news to parents because the more CO the merrier 😄

Congratulations to all who gotten CO :rahrah: and all the best to those taking PSLE this year.

Maybe this was what happened.

After all the tests and review of acad & non-acad achievements, they have this pool whom they think will be able to cope with HCI IP. (A + B + C)

Then they decide on who they really want to have in HCI. (A + B)

But (A + B) > 200, so they have to split.

A -> CO
B -> WL1
C -> WL2

If (A+B) > 200, why a need to split :? Unless I remember wrongly, but I remember reading somewhere in DSA thread that school can have more than 50% allocated to dsa - could be I remember wrongly or I comprehend wrongly 😄

ellehcim:

if CO it will be as long as grades allow you to enter express (ie 200 abv). For WL1 or WL2, i guess they will look at score ultimately, vacancies available and your choices during option.

DS and classmates got WL last year but was converted to CO upon collection of PSLE results.

If 2 boys (WL) put HCI as 1st choice in their DSA option form, is their WL conversion dependent on ranking within the WL, or PSLE Tscore, or both?

Eg :
Child A on WL1, PSLE Tscore 255
Vs
Child B on WL2, PSLE Tscore 260

From what I understand, as long as your DC's T-score meets the minimum requirement for express stream, the one on WL1 will have a higher priority than WL2 in getting converted to CO when there is a vacancy. As such, Tscore is not taken into consideration. Whether a WL gets converted to CO depends on how high up is your DC ranked in the WL and if he chooses HCI as his first choice.
As agree with laikiasu's explanation. Their ranking is never disclosed to us, only the school have it in their system. Therefore the positioning of the ranking goes in to fill up CO accordingly. I believe the school did hold talks with CO, WL1 and WL2 parents and explain, me attended last year.

For last yr, I had known kids who are on WL2, 1 was converted to CO on PSLE results day, 1 was not. However his TScore qualifies him for in the cut-off marks for HCI S1 Posting. Thus he had entered HCI successfully, better still, not tied by DSA's restriction 😂
I thought wl converted to CO is till tied down by dsa's restriction?

ConfirmedNotGifted:

I attended the HCI briefing for parents yesterday (first hand account).

During the briefing, HCI said that 200 students have been given CO. I did a quick count and there were about 40 families, hence I guess HCI has probably given WL1 to 50 students.

The teacher (Ms Sandra) said that the students on CO and WL1 are those that HCI would really like to take in, if not for logistics constraints. She assured that the students on WL1 are no less deserving than those on CO.

The VP then said that the school \"guarantees\" all students on WL1 to be admitted to HCI, if they put HCI as their first choice in the DSA exercise. The \"guarantee\" system works in this way:

1. Historically, all students on WL1 who puts HCI as first choice have been given CO finally under the DSA exercise. (For those on WL2, a small minority of them may be disappointed in the end.)

2. In the unlikely event that those students on WL1 are not given CO, on the day of the announcement of DSA results which is also the PSLE results day, inform the school immediately and HCI will admit the student under the \"discretionary\" (appeal) route for PSLE posting. The VP clarified that any student who is admitted under this route will only need to meet the minimum T-score of 200.

I don't remember HCI saying that you cannot put another school in second choice under the DSA exercise. It all boils down to which school you want your child to go to. If you like HCI, put it as first choice and you will get what you want, since the school guarantees it.

Finally, to all parents out there who do not have CO or WL, please give all possible support and encouragement to your DC. There is still 50% of the vacancies left for grab! Good Luck to All!

Ms Sandra gave a t score of 250 or higher for appeal cases under wl2 list. It was also shown on the slides she represented. Hmmm.. y such a big difference from 200 for wl1...

I find it rather strange that wl1 are no less deserving than those on CO and school would even admit them under appeal route if their psle t-score is 200 , but yet CO is not given due to logistic issues. Any idea what is the logistic constraint?

And if the school clarified that any student in wl1 admitted under appeal route need only to meet the minimum t-score of 200, does it mean that if a student’s t-score is 200, the school would still admit them under appeal route? This is quite astonishing to know as all along I had the idea that appeal cases are those with t-score that are very close to COP. Well, this is good news for those on wl1 and also good information for those dsa-ing in future 😄

Thanks phtthp and book worm.

To me, a wl is still a wl, no doubt based on historically data, it is converted. But it is still not a CO (otherwise, CO would have been given) because what happen historically may not happen this year. Hence, parents should be realistic. I am surprised school appeal for wl1 in case less CO is given up – good to know the system, very useful information for those who are dsa-ing in future.

I am also surprised to learn from edyboy’s post that there are quite a number of appeal cases which went through under supplementary intake. Hence, it is good for parents who know about such avenues, for those who do not, they may blur blur and accept whatever school dc posted to without knowing they can appeal.

Thanks to all who contribute to the forum, really learn a lot. I am beginning to comprehend the comments by some forummers. I hope that more could be done to benefit those who are in the blur blur category and are completely out of knowledge on such things.

monmon31:

Please note that HCI can only give 200 CO's because that is what is offered during DSA exercise. There will be students with multiple COs probably from NUSH, RI ,HCI. Since they can only take 1 CO, effectively 2 CO's will be given up to benefit another 2 students, it is just that you will not know which one they give up.

Based on historical results, there is 100% conversion of WL1 to CO's.

I did not attend the session yesterday but a friend said- VP commented that WL1 will be converted to CO only if you put HCI WL as first choice and nothing else in 2nd choice. They promised they will appeal to MOE to absorb the students should there be such a situation where CO given up is less than WL1.

I believe since they will be willing to commit to so many people in the session yesterday, i trust that they can deliver their promise.
thanks monmon31. i thought school are able to give out more than 200 CO because they are able to offer more than 50% for dsa. If WL1 is guaranteed, might as well give CO so that if in case less people give up CO, no need to go through appeal - just my thoughts. Anyway, it is up to school to decide on their process 🙂

btw, congrats to you 🙂

thanks Lexis. it is great to know that there is only 1 o level class, because I remember reading through and someone mentioned there is one 0 lvl class per consortium (maybe i read wrongly) - for those who dsa and took o lvl, if they are not able to get into hcjc, do they go to other JC or have to go poly?

btw, if there is no change in subject combination in Y3, does it mean the rest stay throughout the 6 years in the same consortium? one more question - are opportunities opened for all and for those who are finally chosen - are they mostly from the ispark consortium?
