Dear Desperatemummy,
My son is in P1 too. I am also a FTWM and sometimes I will reach home at 9 plus. I think the important thing is to set routines for your child.
My child will start doing some work from 9 to 10.30 pm. He wakes up at 9 am the next day. Before I leave for work, I will write some spelling words from the story book he reads the night before and get him to practice. The maid will help to supervise. Otherwise, in the evenings, he will complete homework from enrichment classes.
On weekends, he attends enrichment classes on English and abacus. We may stop his abacus soon and enroll him into Math classes focusing on problem solving. His current abacus homework focuses on addition and subtraction of 10 numbers and multiplication. Well, it will increase his speed of calculation, the problem solving skills are not there.
If you look at the compulsory books purchased, some of them are assessment books. I remember there is a green coloured vocab book. You can get your child to do it first. The book contains series of 10 MCQ questions on vocab.
We prepared him for han yu pin ying when he was in K2 by sending him to chinese classes as my hb and I are helpless with that. So for the han yu ping ying words from the spelling list, I even have to ask my son to tell me to pronounce the words for words for me. Hahaha.
I tried to pique his interest in Science by buying him scientific sets. He is too lazy to fix the motors and stuff. So the sets are collecting dust at home.
At the end of the day, routine is important. It is also important to manage our expectations. Jia you!
