    • RE: All About Piano Maintenance & Tuning

Does anyone have experience with piano tuning service from Steinway Gallery? I understand that they also tune pianos that are not from Steinway Group. Each tuning costs $160 but a contract of 2 tunings is $260. The prices are substantially higher than most of the quotes I saw in the market, so am wondering if it is worth the investment. Many thanks!

      For advanced-level students of piano...

This freelance artist-cum-piano teacher does not have qualifications that we are (or I am) familiar with in Singapore - he studied fine art in Royal Academy of Arts, but his ability to deconstruct a piece of music to facilitate learning and his musicianship are simply amazing...

He runs a art and piano studio in Thailand. His lessons...free 😄

Here's a free 18-minute lesson on how to practice Chopin Etude Op.10 no. 4

    • RE: All About Music For Beginners & Selecting Instruments

      phtthp:
Are there any (p1-p6) children who play both piano and violin? How do u juggle time to practice both instrument everyday, mon-Fri? How much time do you practise both instrument everyday?

I know of two kids who play 2 instruments. One boy obtained Gr 8 in violin at P5 and Gr 8 in piano at P6, both with distinction. He went on to RI later. One girl obtained Gr 6 in cello and Gr 8 in piano at P4...she is still in P4.

I understand that they might not be able to practise on both instruments everyday.

    • RE: Teacher Dreamaurora - Piano Q&A

      waiyean:

Okay... my girl finally turned 5 a few months back, and I had made the decision to send her to NAFA starting next year.

Question is, how to break the news to her current teacher/school? Her current teacher is great, and my DD has been with the school since she was a baby. Sigh...
My son was with a great teacher from P1 to Sec 1 who coached him through dip exam & a few competitions. One day she asked if I would consider changing to another teacher as she felt my son was too comfortable with her and musically he could benefit from a fresh perspective. She recommended a couple of teachers outside of her music school & even helped put in a good word so that my son could be accepted by one them. I have tremendous respect for her as she has her student's interest at heart.

I believe good teachers are quite professional about the need for fresh perspective. Perhaps you could share with your DD's teacher that you'd like your DD to have a diff exposure with NAFA?

I am looking to upgrade our piano.

May I seek comments/advice/reviews on Kohler & Campbell(made in Korea)and Ellington(made in China). Both models stand at 131cm, similar pricing.

The respective dealer 'claimed' their piano is made of European/German parts. Should I be concerned with their assembly origin? If u hv to make a choice, which would you go for, or none at all? TIA.
Have you compared them with say Yamaha U1 or YUS-1?

Thank you strangequark. The RGS 1:1 website is quite useful.

I am concerned about the weight of my daughter’s school bag. Unfortunately, this is not answered in the list of FAQs.

    • RE: All About Violin Classes and Teachers

      Blessedwife:
      Hi lilac66,

Wow yr DS is taking grade 7 !!! How long has he learnt violin? You must be very proud of him 🙂

May I ask how did you practice with him or from young he can managed on his own?

I find that I am of not much help when my son practice his violin. He is not very keen to practice violin and I need to keep reminding him. Also, when his violin teacher told me to take note of this and that (to correct him) during his practicing I am rather clueless about it. Is it really necessary for the mum or dad to have basic knowledge of violin so that we can guide our DS ?

Sorry for asking so many questions but I am wondering should we continue his violin since he has started from January till now.
Have you considered video recording your son's violin lessons? I used to do that when I sat in my kids' violin lessons even at diploma levels. It helped when they could see their teachers' demo at home.

Regarding having to remind your son to practice on the violin, you are not alone. Practicing for technique is hard and it is not always possible to make practice fun. I have personally accepted the fate that I have to remind my kids to practice on a daily basis, and often times without success 😞
