marstolive:
can somebody help me with this?

what is the similarity between a plot and a subplot?
Thanks πŸ™‚
Err your question is a little unclear. Basically, plot is the key sequence of events in the text (most novels have a plot unless it's a specific style). Sub plot is fundamentally a slight deviance from the main plot, possibly through different characters and relationships.

A similarity between plot and subplot may mean there's a parallel in terms of structure/content. For example, in King Lear, the plot/subplot similarity is evident through the conveyance of common themes (family, blindness, age and youth etc). Similarity may also exist in the effects evoked in the reader or the impact the author/playwright seeks to achieve. This could help to reinforce overarching ideas. At times, plot and subplots diverge; the effect is usually significant in writer's intent.

Don't know if this actually answers your question...

• RE: Would you pay for university fees of your kids?

Just a little input from a kid: my parents, like many of you here, have made it very clear they will ONLY pay for my Uni if it’s at a local institution. Fair enough, since it is way cheaper. But they are also against taking a loan, because it may mean I’d be in debt for the next decade. I recently got a conditional offer from a top uni in US, but am forced to rethink it because of finances. As for savings, the habit of saving has been cultivated in me since young, and I do have a decent amount amassed; however, it is definitely nowhere near covering US$45,000 ANNUALLY for tuition alone. (note: I also work part-time) And of course I am trying for a scholarship. But honestly, despite the large number of scholarship providers, each agency still offers less than 10 grants/year (some even less than 5!). Even as a competent student, the struggle is real!

zbear:

It will help a lot if he reads widely on current affairs both locally n globally (apart from text book).

Ok...thanks for the tip...will get him to start reading more.

Hello janet88 and other concerned mommies! πŸ™‚
SS is a very fluid subject - a little like history. Reading about current affairs will definitely help, but it's also important to understand its relevance.

Here's a tip - get your kid to follow some news site like CNA, TIME, Bloomberg, etc etc on twitter/fb. This way, it allows them to be aware of global and regional happenings (even if it's just from headlines alone - better than nothing haha). Plus since it's on social media, the news gets updated really quickly and also convenient for your kids! πŸ™‚

Also, lots of practise helps! Esp. for source-based. Good luck!

Am selling some of my SS resources and model essays if anyone is keen!

• RE: O-Level English

BlessDaddy:
What are the resources ? As my kid also have difficulties in Eng ! He can speak fairly well, however, he do not know how to phrase his sentences properly, including all the grammar mistakes, weak vocabulary as well. Any idea how I can help him ?

Thanks
Hi BlessDaddy, are you inquiring about the lower sec resources? Or my listed resources?

Cliched but reading helps! Besides novels and young adult fiction, reading magazines will also help. Likewise, the assessment/guide books I listed above are also very useful, as well as Present Perfect magazines. Those magazines are tailored for secondary school syllabus, thus are an incredibly effective resource for English.

The vocab book I listed above can help to boost your child's vocabulary knowledge, and I also have SAT grammar notes (it goes back to the basics) which may fix your child's misconceptions.

PM me if you have any other queries. πŸ™‚

• RE: Assessment books for IP (Year 1-4)

Jennifer:
DS needs more practices to get used to answering method.

Ah boy came back with more disappointing news about the tests score. For Science, he feels that he lacks the answering skills. Which r the Science assessment books that will help?

For Humanities, he knows the PEEL method, but when he puts his thoughts in writing, the essay just does not gel tge. Will reading non-fiction help to develop the writing skills for Humanities?

Many thanks in advance.
Hi Jennifer! This is a little late, but for Humanities the trick is to flesh out your ideas step-by-step. The easiest way to improve is simply through lots of practice, but doing essay outlines/plans may help. It allows your son to methodically delineate his argument, and it is also easier to stop the gaps in his writing through that (i.e. sometimes certain sub-points are skipped, which causes essay to fall apart despite it seemingly following a PEEL structure). Often a clear, succinct piece is what teachers/examiners are looking for!

Non-fiction reading may help substantiating his knowledge, but does not necessarily strengthen writing at the secondary school level.

I am selling some materials I personally used for my studies (listed in the post above). Let me know if you are interested. All the best to your son! πŸ™‚
