MMM:Crescent uses electronic attendance taking called the iOK system. In Sec 1, students will have their fingerprints taken and it will be recorded in the system so every morning, students have to go to any of the iOK stations, located around the school near all the entrances, to sign in. As long as she signs in before 7.30am, her attendance on the teacher's phone will show that she is present. Else, it will be recorded as late. There will be a disciplinary briefing for students yearly which explains more regarding this matter. Crescent also uses fingerprints to unlock classrooms and any other rooms to ensure security. Only selected students within the class, such as class chairperson and vice chairperson, and of course all the teachers will be able to unlock the classroom door.singaporekid_:The bell rings at 7.30am. Crescent focuses on all subjects equally, including Mother Tongue and the teachers in each dept are equally dedicated in teaching their subjects. The bell rings at 7.30am. After 7.30am, 1 demerit. After 8am, 2 demerits. On rainy days, after 7.35am, 1 demerit. Assembly starts 7.25am-7.30am usually.Hihi! Few questions...

* Wonder how is the focus on Chinese language in the school as compared to schools like Chung cheng high?
* And anyone staying north as in towns like amk? And how r u coping w the daily traveling to n for school?
* Roughly how long u get to reach school n via which route?
* Am I rite to say from mrt to orchard n then bus 111 is the shortest route for the travel?
* Also, what time does the bell rings? My fear is gal receiving demerit points for being late.. -

If the student does not take HCL in lower sec, she will not be allowed to take HCL in upper sec as well. Students can only drop from HCL to CL but not the other way round.
Hello MMM,MMM:
Hi, need advice.
To be able to take HCL in Sec 1, what are the criteria besides PSLE outcome?
Eg. if based on PSLE outcome, HCL is not offered, can the child still try to do HCL?
Based on friend's dd who is in the school, if the child has done well for Chinese in Sec 1 and Sec 2, she will be given the chance to take up HCL in Sec 3. You can check with the teachers on Reporting Day.

Hi yes, ur dd can appeal to take HCL, however, I believe she will have to sit for a test to determine the outcome.. best to call your dd's choice school n talk to HOD Language.
I appealed to take HCL in Sec 1 and there was no entrance test. I wrote to the Principal and got my parents to sign. I think as long as the child really wants to try HCL, the school will allow. But to continue HCL after Sec 2, the student must get more than 55 marks. For that, appealing is not allowed. -
RE: Crescent Girls' School
By the way, about 62.5% of the girls scored 6 distinctions for last year's O Level. Isn't that a very good achievement already?

Just to clarify, we are promoting the school on our own accord, not because our school has asked us to do so. We are also sharing our own experiences which are definitely not fake. But I guess different people are suited better for different environments so our accounts might vary and of course there will always be some black sheep amongst the students who talk bad behind people's backs, but that is a minority. And even though the teachers are busy, they still give all their free time to the students, especially Sec 4s, so I think that is very honourable. I did not have to look to home tutors because I could clarify my doubts with my teachers.Crescent Girls is ok school.
I read with interest the Forum dated recently about this school.
It seems the contributors ( mainly its students as they claim ) are deliberatly promoting very hard this school to the public.
Gives us a 'fake feeling'.
My daughter said her classmates will bad mouth others from another class.
During recess, the students will be quite rowdy and cut queue. But I guess these situations occur in most schools.
Someone mentioned about seeking teachers for help after school in
studies issue.
Yes, it's true the students can do that. However, most of the time, teachers are busy with their CCAs commitment that one cannot meet up with teachers after school and in the end, resort to asking home tutors.
It's not teachers' fault, just the school system.
The school O level results have dipped slightly.
Based on 2012 O Level results, Crescent Girls' did not clinch the Sustained Achievement Award for Value-Addedness (SAA) this year.
It has been getting the award for past years.
Daughter feels the school does not really focus on academics as it used to be last time- study pace is quite relaxing now. It used to be more competitive under previous Principal. Suitable for those who do not want to be in a competitive environment now.
The teachers are very nice and caring but too nice that some students take them for granted.
The Principal is approachable and always smiling.
Overall, it's a school suitable for one who wants a normal pace of learning.
The higher achiever students can look for other schools. -

HelloKittyHello:
Hi, does anyone know when will Crescent Girls' Open House be held?
There won't be another open house, but if you would like to know more about the school, you can go down to Crescent any time to take a look at the school compound and if you chance upon some girls who are back in school during the holidays, do feel free to ask them about the school. I'm sure they'll be more than willing to share their experiences with you. That's what my parents and I did when I was in Sec 1 and the girls really did provide me with useful insights!

Hello everyone! I am a student, currently 12, waiting for psle results. I really want to get into crescent if I can score that high -.- Mrs Tan, the principal of crescent girls came to my school and introduce crescent to us. She gave me a good impression of crescent and she is so humorous! She is not like my principal, boring, old and stern. May I ask some questions about crescent? 1. Is the school very stress? 2. What subjects can we take at secondary 1? 3.is it cope able? 4. How's the students there? 5. Will overweight students need to take part in health and fitness club or something like that? 6. Is crescent a highly competitive school? 7. How's the CCA there? Any recommendation? 8. I live in Jurong, I know to get to crescent, we need to take mrt till red hill station. After that, how do we walk to the school? 9.last question, I know in this school, we need to buy tablets to study, so, do the school provide any subsidies for poor students? I know the tablet cost around 2200. Please reply me! The last question is the most important. Sorry if I trouble any of you. I am stupid -.-
Hi ELFandShawol,
I'm a current student of CGS and many students have asked the same questions as you have, so here are the answers to your questions along with some of my opinions!
1. The amount of stress one experiences is dependant on herself. Of course I can't deny that education in Singapore is in fact stressful and life in CGS is definitely not less stressful either, but everyone is going through the same thing and CGS has an environment where all the students strive to help one another to achieve a common goal. We have a lot of groupwork and projects, especially for the lower sec students, fewer for upper sec, but these are the kind of activities that bond the students together and I'm sure you'll have friends and teachers to help you through stressful periods!
2. Sec 1 students take compulsory subjects set by the school. Crescent offers Mother Tongue, Maths, Literature and Science (Physics, Chem, Bio). For Sec 1, there is no English lesson. It is replaced by a subject called Communicative Arts where students learn oratorical skills and presentation techniques such as drama and skits where involvement is crucial. Only in Sec 2, then there will be English lessons which is closer to the O Level syllabus. This arrangement is aimed to get students actively involved in stepping forward to voice out their opinions. The humanities programme is very different from other schools. One semester is dedicated to Geography and the next semester to History. However, we do not have examinations for Geog and History. This two subjects are graded solely on class tests and projects which will be constantly coming in throughout the year to ensure continual learning. It can be stressful when all the project deadlines are closely due, but you'll be working closely with your groupmates for the year. There is LSCEP (Lowe Sec Computer Enrichment Programme) in CGW where it is compulsory for each student, with out without a slate, to learn how to use basic softwares such as Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Of course, there will be experienced full time trainers to conduct classes throughout the year so don't worry about being left out or left behind!
3. Ask Crescentians about whether they can cope, if I hadn't coped through the past 4 years, I wouldn't be here sharing experiences right?
4. Well, the students are a perfecr lively bunch. You will never ever feel left out because there will always be people around you, rooting for you. Most of us are good company, even the naughtier ones are just a little playful but nothing much they can do when the teachers get about nagging haha! And guess what, since we're a girls school, no BGRs whatsoever, so you can focus on studying
5. Yup, CGS has a very dedicated PE dept. There is mass run and mass workout every Tuesda and Thursday throughout the year and for students who require more exercise, there will be arrangements for extra activities. The teachers will try their best to help you pass your NAPFA test and the reason for mass run and workout is so that everyone is exercising together and the underexercised students will be more motivated to exercise with everyone else exercising together with them. Even some of the teachers who are not
in the PE dept will exercise with the students and cheer them on so that it is much less stressful for everyone.
6. There is definitely competition in CGS, but the students are very willing to help one another and are mostly not selfish. They would share their knowledge and there are often seniors coaching juniors or even peers teaching one another. So there is definitely nothing to worry about if you cannot catch what the teacher is saying. There are classmates, schoolmates, CCA mates to help you along and most of the time everyone does well together.
7. I will not comment too much on CCAs in case I offend some groups, but the performing arts groups are pretty strong, with Band and Dance and also others. But the sports and clubs and societies equally strive to achieve excellence so it depends on what you enjoy.
8. You know what, we're the only school in the area with students donning blue and yellow, so you can follow people and you'll reach the school. Or you can ask people at the MRT station, everyone knows. Or you can cross the road to the opposite bus stop and take 132 and stop opposite the school, then cross over. Or you can consult google maps hehehe, a bit hard to describe how to walk, but you'll learn by following the crowd. It really isn't too far.
9. Your Form Teacher should be asking if anyone requires financial assistance for slate purchase. Alternatively, if you are too shy to voice it out in class, you can email you teacher or tell him or her personally. They understand that and are very approachable so don't feel shy. Or you can get your parents to enquire at the General Office as well.
Hope my answers have helped you portray a clearer picture of life in Crescent and we would surely be glad to welcome you into our Crescentian family, should you decide to join us

RE: Crescent Girls' School
Just saying, CGS teachers are the most dedicated, loving and caring teachers you see around. It is very very easy to feel comfortable around them and the whole CGS atmosphere is one where there are hardly any boundaries. Most people think it strange to get too close to their teachers, but in CGS, everyone is close to everyone. The teachers are more than just teachers, they are friends, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers to us. Any problems you face in school, they would guide you along the way, take time off their busy schedules to lead you and help you so that you donβt lose yourself in studying. They would offer consultations to students whenever students need to ask questions and especially for sec 4 students, when it is nearing O Levels, the teachers actually donβt mind sacrificing their Saturdays and Sundays to meet the students in or out of school for consultations. They are almost 24/7 contactable, all but a few, through facebook, twitter, whatsapp, call them, sms them. You can find them almost immediately if you require assistance in your work and most of them are fine with that practice, as long as you ask them for permission first. In a way, they would console you and guide you as though they were your own parents, in another way, they would joke along with you and find out about your progress by chatting with you as though you were their friend. Such dedicated teachers are hard to come by, yet in CGS, every single of them are so friendly and approachable because the school culture is like that.
