20 and 21 Oct. My boy got the letter last week. He probably stands no chance if prepping is as common as it sounds here! Mine never had any tuition and self learns.

We called in the afternoon. Apparently 38 SC <1km.
Does anyone know if SCGS admin will be nice enough to tell us the latest stats on the phone?
We'll be under P2C SC <1km. -
RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools
Do everyone a favour (including yourself) by applying early. This way everyone will have a clear view of which one to try/ballot for.
A couple of years ago, ACSP went to ballot for the <1km only because of last minute applicants. People who are <1km for both ACSP and ACSJ didnt have enough time to withdraw from ACSP and apply at ACSJ, which had like 5 more slots for <1km. -

zac's mum:
Thanks. Haha unfortunately his sample size is limited by how many boys are sitting right next to him (so maybe 4-5 comparables?). My understanding is that the pull-out classes are for kids at the extreme end, so probably not useful as a gauge either.
We never had any cohort statistics in P1 last year either. Nor this year P2.
I get my sense of what is above average when I hear my kid tell me which boy in class is always scoring full marks for class tests & spelling etc (yes boys are naturally competitive and will compare stats for fun. Even Pokémon stats).
I get a sense of what is below average when I found out that the teachers are so dedicated that they conduct after-school remedial for the very weak kids. And there is also LSP and LSM pull-out classes for the kids struggling with reading and counting concepts.
So if your child is not in either of these groups, then he’s average. At least that’s how I gauge. -
RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Junior)
With the removal of cohort statistics in the report book, I find it difficult to ascertain whether my son is coping well in school academically. He’s in P1 and got >280/300. I thought it was pretty decent but we didn’t receive the Edusave Merit Bursary letter, which means’s he’s not in the Top 25%.
Do you guys have a sense of what is considered average in P1?
Thanks! -
RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools
What could be the alternate school in your example?
floppy:
1. You don't conclude that ACSP has lower chance of balloting - You conclude that ACSP may have balloting at a risk that you find acceptable, and you prefer ACSP to whatever alternate school you had in mind, given the nearly finalized odds in balloting.
2. The logic being (a) withdrawal from other school may take time and (b) ensuring that the nearly finalized odds is acceptable to you.
In such registration exercise, it's really about 'me' and what 'I' find acceptable (e.g. risks, odds, etc). It's not really about what other people think and what they may have to go through (e.g. balloting). -
RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools
Haha I still can't see the logic. Maybe you can help.
At 4pm today ACSJ had 5 vacancies and ACSP had 1. If you are the parent, how would you conclude at that time that ACSP has lower risk of balloting?
And if you are a parent who is <1km for only ACSP, what is the logic behind waiting till 4.25pm to register?floppy:
I beg to defer. I know it can be hard to accept, but they are pretty wise who after weighing their odds, decide to apply in the school. A number of forummers have been highlighting that registration isn't based on first-come-first-serve, and the high risk of balloting at both schools historically. It has also been highlighted by them that ACSJ is less likely to ballot at <1km as compared to ACSP.

RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools
Sure they played by the rules but no doubt they are unwise.
All SC <1km for ACSJ and ACSP could have been zero risk, and those between 1-2km could have had a chance to ballot.floppy:
The same drama happens every year, but:
1. They weren't late.
2. They play by the rules.
3. It's a risk that everyone has to assume.
It could also be said that those in 1-2km lost their glimmer of hope and weren't able to withdraw to switch schools, thus relegating them to P2Cs. -
RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools
Really dumb. If they are so insistent on ACSP then they should have applied earlier. Coming in so late means those who are <1km from ACSP and ACSJ can't pull out in time to register at ACSJ which has 5 vacancies for them.
Momof2childs:
Two people with no sanity came at last moment and made it balloting. That's what I was worrying and that's what happened. All the best to rest of 38 for Monday.

RE: Anglo Chinese Family of Schools
I'll be there too. In case of the ridiculous snenario where ACSP requires balloting for <1km and ACSJ doesn't require balloting for 1-2km.
