Hi, Beem2. Wonder if you can elaborate further why not POA?

RE: 2014 Sec 2 Discussions
Hi, would like to get some opinions on my son’s subject combination choices. His results are very mediocre-- 50s. Hence, we are considering:
1. Combined Science
2. Pure History
3. SS/ Lit
4. AMATH
5. EMATH
6. English
7. Chinese
8. Principles of Accounts
We’ve several concerns about this combination though:
1. We were told pure History is super tough. But cos son doesn’t like reading too much, Pure Lit may be worse. So, we’re actually still wrangling which Pure humanities to do …
2. We’re very new to the subject POA. We had the impression that is a subject performing students don’t take. Can someone elaborate on the difficulty level of this subject? I know of a student who generally didn’t do well yet scored distinction at O Levels.
3. We’re contemplating if we should appeal for double science. But as he plans for a Polytechnic education, we feel perhaps combined Chem & Physics is better for him.
4. Would also appreciate if anyone can share about pure or elective Literature.
Thanks! -
RE: Polytechnic Academic Calendar
My first child is heading for Ngee Ann Poly this year and its academic calendar is so different from the secondary schools! Do they generally change the number of holiday weeks in Dec? I noticed 2013 Dec has 3 weeks holidays but 2014 is just 2 weeks! I was planning a 3 week family vacation to reward my second DS who will be sitting for his O level this year. But looking at NP academic calendar it seems tough.

RE: Republic Polytechnic
Republic Poly:
I think it's great that RP opens up communications with this thread. As my son opted for a Poly education, we had to go down to his choice Poly to ask, definitely a tad more inconvenientHi all,
We are Republic Poly!
Should you need any info on Republic Poly courses, student life activities/ CCAs, and poly admissions (JAE, DPA, JPSAE, PFP, etc.), please feel free to contribute to this topic or use the PM function.
We will try to respond to any queries soon but seek your understanding if we take a little longer than usual; there would be occasions where we need to check and confirm with other departments.
In addition, we will try our best to assist you but please note that all RP's replies and posts should only be served as guide and not definite answer. This is because some situations are considered on a case-by-base basis. At the same time, we usually won't know every detail or the full picture of the question put up, so do use our replies/ posts as a reference only.
Please also pardon us if we misinterpret your enquiry.
Thank you!

But since we are talking, I would like to ask about DSA. My second son is sitting for his O level this year and plans to go Poly next year. He is a bowler and I wonder is there any DSA into either RP or other Polys in general? -
RE: * St Andrew's JC (SAJC)
Seems SAJC is quite a balanced JC from the few feedback. Thanks a lot!
I like the play hard part. These days schools tend to be too academically driven that they seem to forget sports and arts let our youths excel further.
I wonder how many subjects do JC students have to take per semester and what grades these days can make it to local Universities? -
RE: * St Andrew's JC (SAJC)
Hi!
Would appreciate some feedback on SAJC as DS is considering applying to this school. DS gets easily stressed with exams, hence, I’m wondering if this route, in particular, SAJC, is for him. Any comments about the school’s learning environment and culture will be very much appreciated. Thanks! -

RE: Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road)
Metis:
Hi! Am interested in any comments about the CCAs. My boy took golf in ACSP and is crazy about it but Barker does not offer golf. He is interested in programming but it seems that the Infocomm Club focuses on robotics. He does not like performing
so dance/choir/drama are out. Does not like swimming nor water polo nor rugby nor basketball... Sigh... Would be grateful for any info or suggestions.
Although ACSBr doesn't officially offer golf, it can accept private training as CCA. You can speak to the CCA Head. They'll even lookout for tournaments for your son to participate in. Do explore this avenue since your son so passionate abt golf

RE: Maris Stella High School
temptemp:
Thanks for the reassurance. Sure hope the same goes for my son!My elder son graduated from MS in 2010, all along he is a weak student for Chinese, 40+ to 60 at most. Sec 3 was worst, only 30+. But in his O level, he managed with a B3 in Chinese & Distriction for Chinese Oral.
I remembered his Sec 4 meet-the-parents session I attended, I expressed worry for his Chinese but his form teacher replied \"just a pass will do, better to focus on his best 5 subjects..
So don't be too worry about it

RE: Maris Stella High School
QLL:
Hi QLLHi skyjiuce
I chance upon this MSHS link as my son is in the same school Sec 3 as well. May I know how can my son know of the CIP hours he has done? He doesn't seem to have a clue of where to obtain this information and is relying heavily on his uniform group team head to keep track for him. This is scary as I do not want him to see stars when he reaches Sec 4 when there are still so many hours yet to complete.
Though the school is very wired, I do agree that many information are just lacking and not updated. MT is always ke wai, and my son has been failing it like a cup of tea, I wander where can he seek help as I don't think his Chinese teacher is doing much to help and O level is next year! Thanks
I believe Mr Jeremy Wong is in charge of CIP. In the month of May, he emailed to all Marists regarding the points they've earned so far. If your son is in UG, I doubt he needs to do much volunteer work as UG earns lots of points for their activities. Of course, to be safe, it's good to check with Jeremy his points status thus far. I'll PM you the content of that email in case you did not receive it.
As for Chinese, my son is not passing either! It seems more failures in Chinese than passes in MSHS. It's quite disappointing since it's a SAP school. I had thought the school would be able to prepare the boys better for the subject. Alas!
