      sleeping beauty:

Pardon my ignorance but you mentioned 9 subjects in RGS. How many compulsory subjects do RGS girls have to take in Sec 1? I can think of only 7 - EL/MT/Maths/Science/History/Geography/Literature. 8 if one takes a third language. Can ANY ONE please advise what I am missing ?
For Sec 1, 7 not including 3rd lang.
For Sec 3, 9 not including 3rd lang. Different subjects depending on the combination. Note the diff betw Sec 1 & 3 - there are 2 Maths (Sec 1 only 1), 3 Sciences (Sec 1 only 1) and there is compulsory Social Studies (not avail in Sec 1).[/quote]

Really appreciate your clarification. Thanks, mjl !!! :celebrate:

EL and Literature are separate subjects ?

I think so. Not sure either. :?:

      mjl:
RGS used to calculate the GPA based on average GPA of all subjects, but from this year onwards, it is based on the best of the two - Average GPA of all 9 subjects, Average GPA of 7 selected subjects.

    • RE: PSLE 2009 Top Student Predictions

//Moderator's note: Most creative/useful prediction Award

My prediction is Raffles Girls' Primary. Reasons:

      1) It hasn't produced a student in the Top 10 Ranking list in the last 2 years, so with a new principal this year, the pressure is on!

      2) Read from other threads that there is a GEP student who tops the GEP cohort year after year (if my memory serves me right).

      3) Hope that RGPS, by producing a top PSLE scorer this year, will result in more parents interested in sending their kids to this school so that my DD gets better chance at the neighbouring NYPS P1 registration next year!

So mummies of existing RGPS girls, don't write too much bad things about the school, ok? šŸ˜‰
I have a friend who has been teaching GEP in RGPS for many years. I recall her sharing with me that RGPS has been consistently producing the highest PSLE T-score average (about 265) among the 9 GEP centres, for quite a number of years now. Not sure of exact number though.

According to her, the top few P6 GEP performers (more or less the same handful) in RGPS currently, have also been among the top few in the entire GEP cohort (in Singapore) from P4-P6. So, it seems that any one of these consistently outstanding performers will stand a good chance of topping the PSLE, although not necessarily so. It could be any one -- maybe a kiasu parent's kid ! šŸ™

Having said this, the PSLE T-score is only a reflection of a child's performance in a single examination and may not accurately reflect a child's true abilities. There are too many factors beyond our control eg. I know of someone who took the paper in hospital while nursing a high fever from Dengue - poor thing! 😢 What is more important (my 2 cents worth) is that parents not get too carried away by a number (T-score) and forget to affirm the child's efforts and self-worth, which should not be tied to a figure in the first place. All the best to those waiting for their PSLE results and don't forget to give your kids their well-deserved hugs, no matter what the result ! :grphug:

i know, but i have 2 boys, so i am rooting for the boys!!!! :!:

I believe that a boy will top the PSLE this year as boys tend to be much stronger in Maths than girls and this year's Maths paper was a killer. This translates to a very high T-score for Maths for those who are still able to score very well despite the high level of difficulty.

Jedamum, do I get points for getting the gender right ? haha ! šŸ˜‰
      Please ??? šŸ™

I vote for neighbourhood top scorer!

Reason being, it's about time dark horses show the dragons that they too can ROAR! And SOAR! :celebrate:

Too much emphasis and limelight has given to top schools. šŸ˜›
There are hidden gems in our neighbourhoods too people!
I'm definitely rooting for the under-dogs this time. šŸ˜‰

Hopefully, this year we can hear a true-story of a true-blue student who
survived the PSLE without tuitions or enrichments, tough odds as it may
be... that would be one inspiring story i am looking forward to this year.

      :grphug:
I agree! I'm rooting for the underdogs too. šŸ˜‰

If I'm not wrong, the top PSLE pupils for the past 2 years managed their feats without any external tuitions or enrichment courses. A very significant similarity was that they both had dedicated stay-home mums supervising and guiding them throughout the process. Hurrah for all stay-home mums ! :celebrate:

    • RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)

Just wondering if taking up many CCAs has anything to do with logging LEAPS points as quickly as possible, other than passion and interest of course.

Can anyone enlighten me about the importance and significance of the LEAPS score in IP schools? As far as I know, this is only important for gaining entry into a JC of one's choice, from a mainstream sec.school. Is the LEAPS score taken into consideration for scholarship applications after the A levels ?? :?

      :thankyou:

    • RE: 2009 GEP Screening And Selection

      TwaTau:
Don't think you going to get any past year GEP paper in the market, unless someone found out there is a demand for it. Anyway, I don't think you need any further papers, your kids will be quite occupy by their GEP curriculum, and hopefully the rest of the time, you allow them to have some relaxing time.

The only way you can get past year GEP papers will be from ex-GEP pupils. There is currently nothing on the market as far as I know.

However, you do not need to worry at all as the teachers will usually let the pupils try the relevant past year (2-3 years) papers before each common test or major exam, as a form of practice and also to familiarise them with the format of the paper. šŸ˜„
