    • RE: What are the crafting activities you can do with your child?

Talking about folding clothes, today I got my daughter to improvise using her metal pot to iron her clothes at the dramatic corner and she loves it. Then I took out the magic clean mop’s handle…you know the stick? Yeah I hung it over two chairs for her to pretend drying her clothes that she has washed in a big black ikea box which was supposed to be her washing machine! Yeah she was happily pegging away and using the hangers! It was so fun to watch her doing that!

Pretend play is such a BIG PART of a child’s life, I guess apart from crafting activity… everyone should really encourage their child/children to role play, not just in school but at home too! Yeah I’ve got to agree folding clothes is such a great idea too. Maybe I will get her to start off by folding her shorts…Thanks!

@picapica I tried it with my daughter, haha the silhouette doesn't turn out as beautiful as the ones your kids did 😛 but yes she definitely enjoyed the learning experience and that's the most important 🙂

    • RE: I Can Read - Discussion

Hi I would like to find out what’s a good age to send my daughter for I Can Read Programme…I personally feel that K1 is quite a good age but my friend who sent her daughter told me that K1 is too late, it’s better to send my child who turns 4 next year… For those parents who have sent your child to I CAN READ programme, what’s your take on this?

@picapica that's an amazing idea! I thought of doing that too cause I saw a similar project in one of the Reggio Emilia book which I have read. It certainly would be cool to display the craft on the wall as decoration so I collected some tissue boxes but I think they are too bulky perhaps I can get hold of some cereal boxes instead, like medium boxes used to store honey stars! Thank you so much for your suggestion and by the way I really love your blog, keep writing and keep up the good job! I will share with you the learning process once I am done with it! Thank you dear 🙂

    • Problems encountered?

Just curious to find out if anyone of you face issues when crafting with your child/children?

I would like to share mine....

      1) Creativity issue - As much as we know the importance of creativity, being raised in SG (with lesser emphasis on thinking out of the box during my childhood days) I guess it's hard to break away from the norms and allow my child to explore freely. I tend to overuse the word \"are you sure it's done in this way?\" only to realise that after I have said those words 😞 Arrgh...can be quite frustrating from the point of view of a child who has to bear with my crap 😛

      2) Short attention span - Crafting is a very process orientated activity, for toddlers especially, it seems difficult to get them to pay attention to what they should be focusing on! As much as I find my daughter has good concentration, , she is beginning to deviate from what I am trying to teach her these days. At times, she attempts to do something else instead. I've tried pausing a project if my daughter doesn't seem very interested but sometimes this kind of kill the momentum isn't it? To continue or not to is always a big struggle and I don't want her to have the mentality that she can do things half way....do you face this too?

      3) The use of materials, buying materials or using recycling materials. To promote sustainability I think it's important to use recycle materials if possible. I used to get my child to work on A4 paper at her Mini Atelier, but I have stop doing that because I think providing recycled materials is a better way since she just used her training scissors to cut paper into small stripes at times. Sometimes it's more on the cost factor since I am a stay home mum!

What about you? What are some of your biggest challenges when crafting with your kids?
