For 1-1 tutoring, unless there's a desperate need to, I will focus more on techniques, communication and developing analytical & critical thinking skills, as opposed to spending majority of the time on syllabus related text and giving spelling for textbook words & phrases. I will still go through them but as I explained to the kids, those are covered in school + they are expected to learn and revise them on their own time. The 1.5/2 hr per week can be more effectively utilized doing things that require tutor's guidance/supervision/advice.

Another reason is that out of the 200 marks, only 30-40 (Paper 2 1st 2 sections) are in 'direct' relation to syllabus text. Other components require constant practice and accumulative learning too. This is why for group class, my lesson plans will cover a main area of focus each week (usually 2 weeks on compre related sections, 1 week on compo, 1 week on oral) and I try to do the same for 1-1 tutoring.

Thank you for the in-depth analysis. I totally agree that this is the reason why most parents engage 1-1 tutors. My DD grades avg around 65-70%. Would you say there is a desperate need to keep drilling textbook reading and tingxie? Even if there is a need, can't I just do this part and tutor focus on other more important things or teach her something more useful which I'm not able to? I'm really confused but at the same time wondering if I should just hands off and not question what the tutor is doing.

for me, I dont follow up what tutors taught..so best to go to centres, at least what taught is all aligned..but did you read chenlaoshi's notes..does it make sense to you?
Yes, I did, made total sense to me. But apparently tutor thinks nothing much to plan for as need to it this way to build foundation first. I'm not sure I'm convinced. I do not think her foundation is that poor. A poor foundation child will be failing already.

Tutor claims to be a graduate. That’s the thing… she claims my DD foundation is weak so she’s unable to do other things. But my DD tingxie is always 98-100%. It’s not the school tingxie, is tutor gives more tingxie on top of schools. She says what she’s doing will help her eventually with all the other components and she will pick those other components up later easier if she does this first. I’m just worried carry on like this, not only am I wasting money but also not enough time to work on other things before SA2 comes. Feeling helpless, usually how long should one assess tutor before changing? Haiz… so hard to find good tutors.

Hi all, not sure if this is the right place to post this. What should I expect Chinese tutor to teach during tuition time? My dd grades slide a lot after this year SA1. So I got her a tutor but seems like every lesson just reading textbook and doing tingxie? I can also do this myself. Getting the feeling I’m wasting my hard earned money. I’ve told the tutor what I’d like her to focus on but still seems the same. What does your tutor teach during tuition? As my child never had a tutor before I’m not sure what to expect. Help.

      Hi YvonneTham,

      I'm an SCGS 2016 P1 mum 🙂
      Hi YvonneTham & AdGirl,

I'm also 2016 P1 mummy. 😃 Can I ask you, were you introduced to your gal's form teacher that day? Do you happen to know how many days are PE days for the P1 girls next year?

Hi, my gal will be starting P1 in this school next year. Does anyone send their girls to after-schoolcare near the school? Any recommendations?
