Heh heh..thanks for an entertaining read , buds ..
Just sharing on this thread..I am reading the The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary - i actually bought this for my dd1 but she's currently 'immersed' in her own book (Haitz)
surprisingly dd2 wants to 'borrow' this book - i think her curiosity is piqued because I am reading it so intently..
anyhow, the title I am reading is informative for anyone who wants to know about film making without having to go through all the 'jargon'. Expressed very clearly and earnestly..also the not - so - wordy page is broken up by drawings, neat handwriting and photographs ---how a 'reluctant' reader (aka my dd2) --likes it. Also a lot of cross disciplines-art with math with science and history..cool!
'Telling it the way they see it' style- I think that's one of the reasons why some children like it - straightforward and easy to read and to understand.
after reading this and to 'gaypo' a bit, will compare with local writer Adeline Foo's \"The Diary of Amos Lee\".

RE: River Valley Primary
Puffer:
Yeah..correction noted..puffer..I forgot to mention that my dd year in Pr 2 the classmates were really motivated lot ..and smart(they unblinkingly consistently attain for all three subjects 95 and above..and believe me the rvps questions are 'challenging' )so when the teacher gave them that \"1st 4 positions\" goal, she probably could anticipate based on their results (after CA2)Correction: First 4 in class position does not warrant a place in A class. The School looks at the overall result in whole P3 level. A child may be 3rd in his class but 42nd in standard. Conversely, another child is 15th in his class but <40th in whole standard, he gets into 'A' class. This year onwards, the classes are not named from 'A' to 'G', but I believe the system remains unchanged.
Anyone going to attend the 2.30 talk on Friday, and 5.30 talk by P on subject banding for P4s?
For my dd's class, she wasn't too far off the mark..my dd came in 7th (in class)and was placed 47th in level positioning..she's in 4 Graciousness( aka 'B' class
)
Yap..I'll be there for that talk at 2.30 and 6.00pm(is it 5.30 or 6?)I thought the talk at 2.30 pm ends at 5.30pm(the one by Alan Yip from Mind Edge, right?)
I kinda looking forward to that talk because I would like to be informed of the recent learning strategies. It's going to be a LO>>NG afternoon
..hope to learn something from it!'See' all Pr 4 KS parents there

In Primary One and Two, they will be in the same class together.Hi all
My child will be P1 next year...Seem that every parent is happy with the school. Can anyone enlighten me is there any streaming in this school and if have, when??
Thank you.
End of Primary Two , after sitting for their final exam and the overall year's results have been calculated, in Primary Three, they will then be placed in different classes, according to merit.
(interesting to know that if want to go to A class, should be in the first 4 positions in class ie if the administrative policy is still the same under new principal)
During my dd's time(she's now in Pr 4), the Primary Three classes are ,according to merit,3A to G,A being strongest -academically

RE: Counseling for secondary kids
millan:
As I don't have the specifics, the few I am suggesting here specialise in the counselling of youths: Singapore Children's Society (the one at Toa Payoh), Students Care Service(hougang and clementi).Hi,
Any one has advice on good counseling or psychiatrist to recommend?
My son got attitude problem.. violence inclined (not in action yet).. and poor interpersonal skills...
Really need help on this :?:
:stupid:
If u call the Samaritans of Singapore hotline no, they too will be able to point you in the right direction of resources appropriate to your circumstances:D -
RE: School Of The Arts, Singapore
vlim:
From a 'kiasu' point of view, it's not too early to think of where to send your kid to - at Pr 2 even. vlim's sharing about the maths brings back memories :stupid:
oh eager_beaver...i accept your apology...haaaaa just joking...we are just parents who are very concern abt our children..actually i know very little abt SOTA... just to find out more abt it here and see if there is a possibility my dd can enrol to it in future...so now at least I know that it is not easy to get in unless the kids' art talent is real gd and it only accept students who score above certain aggregate in psle.... I always thinking of alternative for my dd after teaching her maths... :stupid:eager_beaver:
@ vlim, i'm sorry if you are offended but my comments is not directed at anyone in particular.
what i'm trying to stress is that it is very difficult to prepare a child for sota. there are some who started their art form very early & yet were not selected & there are others who receive no formal training but were. i believe students & their parent chose to opt for sota because of the children' passion for their art form & not because of a financially rewarding prospect. If you followed earlier news, you may have read about a girl who forgo her comfirm place in rjc to join sota losing 2 academic years!
i would suggest you expose your child & let her develop naturally accordingly to her interest including other things like sports & even computers. when the time comes, you will have a better picture & can help your daughter decide
perhaps, i'm the one in the wrong forum
At that time, i was already analysing options for my dd.I used report books, ccas, teacher's comments, ptms, and of course my personal interaction with my dd.Every testimonial, award, certificate of participation..I compiled them in a file(from nursery I had already been doing it)- it was her 'resume' file. (Never realised how useful that was until she was in Pr 6 when I had to extract relevant items , either for dsa or other considered school admissions, after psle results were announced.(even when applying for scholarships, I continue to use this resource-fabulously useful because it is organised and accessible
)
I believe this options exploration and conclusions should be done earlier - by Pr 5( in this year, P5 teachers are already preping the children's exam and subject skills)It's a stressful year for parents and kids and who needs the additional 'work' about w'what school am I going to?' grief.Just my opinion
Another important point to note is that all mums' and dads' aspirations and goals must be acknowledged and reflected upon - to see if the child's competencies and interests can meet it. If that is actualised, then it's a congruent decision and all parties can then focus on the psle exam- with peace of mind.
Come what may the child can achieve, he or she has already given the best during the psle year.
My opinion is that the above would really work for those kids who are quite independent..I also share this because my dd would get quite nervous during exmainations so my awareness as a parent helped because I did a lot of ground work before her major exam-school choice, subject choice, interests defining. So that PSLE year was more 'smooth-going' for her.
I had fully realised how pragmatic society we were when many years back I had to go to Ministry of Manpower to enquire about career options. The career counsellor was very competent and a good listener. From her I was made aware that it helps greatly that human talent be fully utilised or optimised.
I do that for my children (with all that loving too )as it also boosts self esteem and when they are older, they feel they can 'contribute' to others, they know what they want, helps smoothen the teenage angst a bit too cos' they are a bit more 'in control' with all that 'ability gathering'-they know their strengths and weaknesses :celebrate: -
RE: River Valley Primary
yeah..eng and higher chinese paper tough ..for pr 4s too..
my dd came back depressed today..i did not want to say too much cos she already feel yucky..this little one so serious..say too much..she feel more pressure..I will just scan the question papers next week when it is returned.. any way no use..rvps tests/exam papers set ,in my opinion, always got 'pattern'--the ca1 for maths always easy..then sa1 the paper is chokingly difficult..the english ca1 always difficult..then sa1 pretty fair..see..pattern...
then the chinese paper (higher chinese) set so difficult..usual lessons in school also never prepare for the monumental tasks ahead in test..not a fair assessment( in my opinion!)What is there to evaluate??
anyway,to cut through the chaste, tests taking IS hard... -

Nah..my dd is in Pr 4..juz finished the CA 1..Hi All
Any parents here attending the Han Yu Pin Yin class conducted by the school last friday? Any comments or experience to share if its really helpful. What is being covered?
Thanks
I did attend the workshop in her P1 year..could be a different one now..not to sure of that.. I gained a lot of knowledge on the subject ..it helped me to assist her when she read her text out loud..to read the words with the right sound but I did not have the energy nor the interest(i suspect) to follow up after Pr 1.
Chinese is not my forte :stupid:
She has a patient home tutor for this subject  -

Yeah..we parents need this sort of support from the schools..it can only benefit the child..yes. sometimes, it's good to have fierce teachers. they will be able to control the naughty kids better.
my son was punished before for talking during her lesson. served him right!
yah. son's form teachers have been good so far...especially this year's form teacher. he responded to my questions very promptly. i dropped him an email last night to ask how to solve one maths question. he responded immediately!
I sense the school's foci have changed since the new Principal took over..the expectation for learning and therefore teaching is higher..
I am glad for I think no student in the school should be compromised on academic progress or excellence..already most of the staff are approachable and friendly.. it's a 'kind' culture.. -

oh..ow yang lou shi? she was my son's p1 chinese teacher...son and his friends find her very fierce

Hi..I am new to this thread..but my dd 2 is from River Valley.Ms Ow Young was also her teacher.Yeah..she's fierce..and strict..my dd2 tells me that she always spends some time reprimanding the boys - she very strict about homework and that must be completed properly. But she is a very responsible teacher..you will be rest assured the assignments will be marked and everything that is to be done followed up..need such a teacher to cultivate good habits ..for the work that is to come.
If this helps, the rvps teachers keep in touch with parents..if anything, all these years, I have never had a single email from any form teacher that has not been promptly replied to and followed up on..
