• RE: Help needed! ): what to subjects to choose for L1R5?

F9Student:
Help!

I take EL, CL, HCL, AM, EM, BIO, CHEM, PHY and COMB HUMANITIES (SS/HIST).

I really want to go JC but I was wondering if I can choose L1(EL) + R5(CL,EM,BIO,CHEM,PHY) ?? Is it possible to choose 3 pure sciences in the R5? I'm not really good in the others you see 😞

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
L1 can be EL or HCL. But if HCL is chosen, then CL cannot be one of the R5. So do your sums.

For R5, your choice is not acceptable as you need a Humanities. The R5 is as follows:
R1: Humanities. Your case, this will be Combined Humanities.
R2: Humanities/Math/Science
R3: Humanities/Math/Science
R4: Next best subject
R5: Next best subject

Hope this helps. All the best.

• RE: HELP!!!

For sec 3, promotion criteria is not based on %.

If u are fr Mainstream sec 3exp, u need a pass in EL & 2 other subjs. If u fail EL, u need 5 passes to be advanced. If u are fr NA, then u need pass in EL & 2 subjs, otherwise 4 passes.

To be on the safer side, check ur sch handbook or with ur teacher. Good luck!
The 1 thing i dont like is the qualifying mark for EESIS at t score of 250 for gep, while the mainstreamer bar is set so far up. All should be at similar cut off.

I dont think its about costs, after all the number of independence schools' intake are limited.

But that is only for year1. The award is reviewed every year based on results.

Yes, but that is beside the point...
I agree with Dreamgear, even though my DD benefitted under GEP. It's much easier for GE students to get EESIS, in fact, the MOE officer kept assuring parents that so long as our child got promoted to sec schs as a GE student (but we were not told what was the criteria for promotion then). Wrt the yearly review, didn't hear of, may be they do track the students but as a parent, again we were not told of the criteria. May be this is an area MOE can reconsider- to have the same criteria for award of EESIS- say at 250 (which is top 10% approx and according to someone the criteria for geppers). If this is good enough criteria for GEP students to get EESIS, then it should also be good enough for mainstream students to get EESIS, in the name of fairness. While MOE argued that no child will be deprived as there are financial assistance schemes available, the cost is high for families that are above the ceiling for financial assistance.

Thanks DreamGear

But I meant, if DD (DSA Sports) does well in Prelims, would the school reconsider (DD already rejected by her dream school) as my DD did not do too well in SA1.

I would prefer to try and secure a place (CO) via DSA than risk it all via PSLE.

Let me know if anyone has done this or tried this... Just wondering and curious.

I am not aware of such case. But how did you know that the rejection is because of sa1 result? The coach told you?

There's no appeal for the DSA process. Just focus on PSLE & get in thru S1 posting. If unsuccessful then, u can appeal.

I won't give my opinion on whether GEP should or shouldn't be implemented, but after reading a couple of posts many parents seem to think that being in GEP is very stressful for the students.

I'm a GE student and I don't think that it's actually very stressful. The teachers don't put too much pressure on you, and when it comes to stress it's usually the parents who end up stressing the kids out with tuition and whatnot. 😓 The workload isn't very heavy either; most students are coping fine.
Well, it's just what I've made of my time in GEP until now. Although there is a significantly larger workload now that PSLE's 'right around the corner', I think that's to be expected. Not intending to insult anyone or start any arguments~ :salute: 🙂

Kia

Of course GEP is stressful ... stressful for the parents who find all means to ensure his/her kid can get into GEP programme.

Sometimes i wonder who is more stress in the education system, the parent or the kid !

Agree. And after the kid gets in, find all means to ensure that the kid does well in the programme. How not to be stressful. If only parents can let nature takes its course, then GEP will really get in only truly gifted kids.

Friend of mine, daughter is good in both academic and many other talents, from RGS, but no morale values. Forget about visiting her parents during Chinese New Year, selfish thinking, is a good manager, able to deliver work's task and delegate works but emotionally and social skills are bad.

So do you think she will turn out differently if she went to nygs? Or any other school?

How a child turns up to be depends on many factors. I believe before & after RGS, she has gone on to a primary school, JC, university etc. Also, family upbringing plays a big part.
My DS attempt to climb Mt Everest (RI) has ended in rejection letter (mainstream-maths domain)… it is lucky he got CO from NUSH. However he is \"brain-washed\" by his best friend to go into RI. I am working hard to convince him that NUSH is an excellent school and to accept the CO.

Urggh... friend vs mom wrestling match....

But if psle results turns out he can go RI will he blame u for that? There is no turning back if u accepts CO. Have to consider properly.

All the best!

You only need to make the decision after PSLE.
By then should have a rough guess on how your DS fare.
If he is very confident and willing to take the risk, can consider aiming for RI.

Few years back somebody did the same thing.
Fully agree with ngbrdad. You have till 21 Oct to decide. No hurry and let him concentrate on his prelims and PSLE. From his prelims and his assessment of how he fare for PSLE, he would be able to estimate his performance, especially if he's the mature kind. My DS' friend could not get into RGS' DSA (extremely difficult for mainstream), but had CO for NUSH 2 years ago. She accepted. But she did very well for PSLE and regretted her decision. We met her at the NUSH preview, and she's still regretting her decision. My 2 children only went for DSA for their 1st choice school. They said if they were not successful, they would work hard for PSLE and get in via S1 posting, because they did not want to miss the chance of going to their 1st choice sch.

• RE: Opinions on changes to PSLE

It’s really not easy to change the posting system. From what PM said, it is likely to be like O or A levels, where only grades are given, and then converted to an aggregate. But O and A levels have more subjects. When the score is not so fine, there will be many with the same aggregate. Plus point is that there will be a wider spread of students across schools. But things will not be as transparent (something we are so used to now, turning back will be difficult), not sure if it’s a good thing from parents’ perspective and whether stress level will go down. Is this what those people who have their voices heard want? Actually I’m fine with the current system, just like some others who have stated their views here.

Only banding. Never explain how to post to secondary school.

PM said it would take some time. So may not be even next year's batch. The ministry needs to solve the sec sch posting problem. There's no simple solution, now that parents are so used to knowing the T-score and the exact cut-of points of each schs. It's different from the past, when we did not even know our score, and chose schools before even taking PSLE, not knowing if we were good enough to enter.

• RE: All About T-Score

myangels:
Hi, Can anyone help me understand what is the actual marks a child must get to be able to get admission into Express stream.

Parents have been telling me different things confusing me. PSLE is here already, but I have not pushed my DD to achieve 250 or above cos I don't believe it is necessary to do that. Let her achieve what she can without getting saturated.

My only concern for her is to get into the Express stream hence my question. Do help. Any info will be helpful. Tks a ton all.
To be clear cut Express Stream, it is 200. But any child who obtain 188-199 can opt for either Express or NA stream. A student who attain 250 or more is in the top 10%. 230+ is considered top 30 percent, according to my DS primary school principal. With higher T-score, there will be more schools to choose from. However, schools accepting students in the 188 range are also doing good work for their type of students too.

According to PM in the ND Rally, the scoring system will change but not for this year's batch.
